RB25DET lifter tick

Does lifter tick get faster when you rev the motor? I have a ticking noise that sounds like its coming from the front/upper half of my motor. The car sits a lot and I hear that due to infrequent oil changes, I could get a lifter tick. The more RPMs there is the faster the tick and its a pretty loud tick. Is there any good guides available on cleaning/bleeding the lifters? I would appreciate any help. I want to drive my car this year but the ticking is unnerving.

Does the ticking go away in boost? Having trouble getting to full boost or holding it? Could be an exhaust leak pre-turbo whether it be the flange or at the head.

Quick and easy way to check for those is take a long piece of spare vacuum line and stick one end near your ear and use the other end to fish around the manifold listening for the source(s).

If not good luck with the lifters. I've been lucky so far and haven't had to deal with any of that yet.

I have to start the car for the first time this year this weekend. Ill make a note when the ticking occurs. I know it ticks at idle. But then again my car liked to idle high towards the end of last season. I've had exhaust leak on my previous SR setup and the tick wasn't as loud either.

Are you sure it's not the injectors you're hearing? The RB uses the loudest injectors I have ever heard on an engine.

If you suspect the lifters, check them in accordance with the RB FSM.

I would love for it to be an injector but this is a loud tick.very loud. I'll get a vid tomorrow when I get her out of the garage tomorrow.

So my definition of "ticking" is completely off. So I did some work on the car today. The car starts up fine but the sound coming from the head is super unnverving. I'm wondering if I have a bent valve or something. I pulled the covers and I saw no sludge or anything. The oil is super clean (I changed it last summer and put 20 miles max on the car. it hardly gets driven). I know its tough to gauge what could be wrong with the vehicle based on sound but here is a video of the noise. Remember this noise is speed dependent.

What would my next course of action be? Would a compression test tell me if I have a bent valve or anything? She starts and idles fine and drives fine although the only driving I do is from the end of my driveway back into my garage.

Edit: Here is another video with a little bit of revving. https://youtu.be/HWnxb16Bfr4

Wow that thing is knocking up a storm. Are you sure that isn't your bottom end? If you listen to it with your ear to the oil pan, does it sound like a rod or crank bearing, or is positively coming from the head only?

Hmm can always check the lifters. I disassembled mine and cleaned them up good, took a couple days since there's so many and with little parts! I lost a spring and had to replace the lifter.

Careful with those cams, back the cam retainer caps off evenly from front to back or you risk snapping the cam.

Take the lifter and press in underneath it, if it moves good lifter, if not possibly bad
