WANTED: oversteer
ok iv been into drifting for a year or so and iv always thought if i had more power i could drift better despite what i had read and heard but im starting to understand it 90% suspension but heres the prob i cant afford a set of $1500 coilovers but after a little research and alot of understeer that maby you dont have to have expensive coilovers or a 1000hp so heres what im thinking some pretty stiff springs like 250 to 300lbs in the rear and a 28mm godspeed or whitline adjustable sway bar for the rear and alittle softer spring for the front this is my first attemp to modify sus other than lowering so tell me what you guys think its a 90 240sx with terrible understeer thanks in advance

i'm not a drifter, but i'd imagine the things you'd need to do for your car to oversteer would be
- E-brake more when understeer occurs - Skinnier tires - Release throttle or foot brake on turn in for better weight transfer to the front to loose traction in the rear if those things don't cause oversteer then work on suspension upgrades

work on changing your driving style to create under/oversteer. When you can do both to some degree you can start working on how the car responds to what you input to make oversteer a little easier to induce.
The car handles how you drive it.

hey squid ill take two of those
sean it does't work that way the more weight you put on the front the more traction it takes to hold it and slidin240 can you post a link to the website you mention

i wrote something but it was punctuated so i had to delete it since the meaning would be lost in translation either way understeer rocks for throttle steering in transition its nice to have more control over what your rear wheels are doing rather than just letting them swing out and possibly snap oversteering into a spin

If you are really looking to build in over steer into the car all you have to do is play with the toe stting (make it positive) on the back wheels. But - that is kind of lame & it wqil give you almost automatic oversteer + snappy back fun. Best way to get oversteer is save some money for an event, go to it, be humble enough to admit you don't know how to drift, the ask someone who does to ride along with you and show you why you suck. Then you'll learn something Timmy and actually you won't be killing space on the motorsports topic when you should be chilling on the bunny slope. hope that helps.

^^ You like to recycle your jokes dont you.
understeer happens to the best of us. Just use whatever is in your arsenal... e-brake, cheap balding tires in rear, good grippy tires in front, sway bars etc. |

just keep practicing..you can do a lot with a stock 240sx and an LSD (or without an LSD, if you have enough experience). Springs and shocks will make it good enough to roll

Check out this link http://www.wtrscca.org/tech.htm
and you can do it, just keep trying. You don't need coilovers or expensive items. It's all about skills. |

it's actually more like 90% driver skill, 10% car.
after doing everything i can to add oversteer to my car, i found the car to be harder to control. i had to fight the steering wheel more. after multiple practice runs, i tuned my suspension for a little understeer. now, i enter turns earlier and make corrections as needed going into the turn, and hit the clipping points.

250-300 lbs is not stiff. In fact, thats pretty soft of a spring. If the car is stock, it probably understeers because of the way you drive it. I'm not trying to "diss" you and say you can't drive or anything like that. Try changing the way you drive the car. How are you trying to initiate your drift? How fast are you going? |

I'm guessing you dont have an LSD? Spend >100 bucks and get your diff welded from flybert/luke and you will have enough oversteer. Hell I have a basically stock car and I get TOO much oversteer.

I could have sworn a welded diff will cause more understeer if you do not change your driving style..Ya know, since it will push harder and all into the turn not allowing the car to rotate

This is very very very true. Welded diff cars plow like mad. But once you figure it all out it can be very fun. If i took this post seriously i would have given real advice on what to do.
