are you doing it for photography or video?
You may be able to get the suction mounts from home depot. If you have a sun roof, you can get screw clamps and epoxy/weld a tripod head to the top, and clamp it on the open sunroof lip. if you're doing it for photography, there are a billion options

google search for DIY car camera mount, I've seen some people rig up a tripod to their front bumper I don't have the balls to strap $1000+ of equipment to a moving car

I've used this one before and it worked out great. Sticks to just about anywhere and you can easily manipulate the camera anyway you want.

there a write up about making a mount for a camera if u have removable headrest in your seats its a little shaky but if u put rubber around where the headrest meets it would reduce vibration, also instead of the one stick just sticking out of the seat i would make some sort of 'leg' that i could bolt it to the floor or something
heres a fast draw of a idea of using the rear strut bar as one of the bases... it wouldnt be that hard to fab up something to hold the strut bar or fab something close to this with stuff from homedepot or places like that... hope it helps... if u have gutted trunk and no rear seats its really easy to find hole to bolt a idea like this to... |

thanks for the replies.itll be used for videos. i put the top of a tripod onto my rear pillar bar but its too far for me to turn on/off the camera.
i also have full bucket seats so reclining to do that is out of the question. that one rig with a clamp on the sunroof sounds good. ill try that out. any other idea's?

i use my tripod inside. Just put your rear seat down. Put one leg back and 2 behind your seats. So the one in the rear is kinda short, but the 2 that are behind the seats are extended more. Then take 2 or three ratchet straps and tighten it down so its solid and doesnt move. And there you go, reachable from the seat, and in the center of the car.
You can even adjust your mirror so you can see the camera lens, so when you watch it, you can see your eyes in the mirror ![]() Heres a pic from my moms honda. with the camera panned to the left. ![]() |

I saw on a while back that was a bar with four holes drilled in it and went under both the driver's and passenger's head rest. He mounted the camera in the middle. It was perfect because the camera is in the middle of the car right at eye level where your head is, but it's out of the way. It's also easy to remove when you aren't filming.

Yeah,
seat mount is a waste of time and money. Do my tripod thing. It works. That picture is a 8 second expose while driving over 25mph. And everything on there is really sharp. It wont be shaky at all. |

I guess it would also depend on the camera you are using.
If its a large bulky Camcorder, then you run the risk of the weight and vibration causing it to fall. You will not only break the camera but piss off the other racers from the debris. ![]() Here is a cheap mount, but not sure if i would trust it. Chase Cam 3 Suction Cup Mount - eBay (item 300243448305 end time Aug-18-08 18:46:26 PDT) If your heart is set on getting that outside shot, then i would highly recommend a "bullet" style camera connected to a solid-state recorder. This would help you with the problem you indicated with controlling the video, while keeping the main components safe. The Bullet Camera is designed to give you flexibility in mounting. Ive seen "kits" listed for around $400. DVR + Camera + Cables, battery, mount, etc . . . Like this one that i have owned. Not the greatest resolution, but its easy to use and mount. Sony 480 line Color CCD Bullet Helmet Camera 30G DVR - eBay (item 330258717171 end time Aug-13-08 07:44:48 PDT) My favorite is Archos Video Recorder with the optional Helmet Camera accessory ARCHOS Personaly, ive had my cameras mounted on the dash, on the roof outside, and just behind the drivers seat - best camera angle was over my shoulder. Great view of the field, you can see your steering inputs, and if fortunate enough you can even see the speed and rpm. |

i had a piece of angle steel and flat steel with the holes in em bolted together on my passenger headrest. then i just screwed a screw into the camera from the bottom.

Another thing i forgot to mention - SOUND.
With a Camcorder mounted outside, all you get is wind blowing. With a chase cam setup, the picture is outside, but the MIC can be mounted inside so that you can hear the engine rev, the tire screaching, the "oh fuck" when you go off track or scream like a little girl. ![]() |

what about if you have a roll cage/ harness bar. mounting it to that right behind the driver but in the middle of the width. so you can get a feel from the cockpit which includes hearing the driver curse or scream lol, and see out the windshield almost like your in the car. you'll see everything. pursue it! i think i will ; )

watch the attached video, the recording quality is horrible. The image quality is ok, but I know the actual recording stuff is going to PISS OFF castro, since thats his thing. It looks like theres a glass of shakey water between the camera and the image. especially when it looks like the rollbar is fluttering like a flag

here they are. these are all home depot kinda builds. im sure you'll find everything there except for the metal plate maybe.
this ones the inside mount about 10in flat sheet bent in three ways. some of the bends are a little angled. you gotta find that out yourselves to get the perfect angle for the camera. have about 4-5 inches before the bend. and then a hole in the other end for the camera to screw on then the 4-5 in. that i was talking about slides into the rear window panel. i used some suction clips and wire to kinda make a leg so that it wont vibrate. and there you go! next is the outside one. flat metal piece again. drill a hole for the camera screw.(dont mind the other holes. it came with the sheet) some suction clips. idk what theyre really called and bam! roof mount you might wanna add some extra security and tie the sheet to the clips or something. just incase theyre not gripping hard enough then the side mount idk what kinda clamp it is but its in home depot made a little right angle with a small sheet to work as a mount. and clamp it to the window. my mount was on backwards i couldnt find my video with it but this is the view you would get im not responsible for anything that goes wrong so make sure you guys properly secure your shit |
