"Custom" exhaust requires resonator?

I'm probably going to end up piecing my exhaust together rather than going pre-fab. Right now, I just need pieces as I just have to pass emissions, and a complete pre-fab at the moment is far outta my price range.

But what I wanted to know is, if I get a muffler shop to do all my mandrel bends, welding, etc, and get an Apexi Universal muffler, will this thing be obnoxiously loud, or sound like a bumble bee? Does it require a resonator? Will going with the resonator make it less bumble bee?

Thanks guys, I searched and didn't find the answer what I was looking for.

going without the resonator would make it sound less "bumble bee".

i'm not sure how the apexi universal muffler is, or how large of piping your going to get, but it's possible to run without the resonator to pass emissions. i'd imagine if you're using the dunk exhaust, or the n-1 universal with a silencer, it wouldn't be too bad.

FWIW: i used to have a "custom" exhaust with 2.25" piping and no resonator, to a universal muffler, and it wasn't really that bad...

as long as I don't need to pop advil going down the highway, I'm good.

Probably 2.25 piping, to a rs style which has the dual tip. Just looks better on the coupe imo.

Ummm smaller tips, less sound i'd guess.

But i'd get a resonator just for the piece of mind. Go to jcwhitney.com and search around. They got the flowmaster type mufflers for like $30 bux. I think it's worth buying.

I think if you add a resonator way before the muffler, in between that and the cat, then it would be quieter and not lose much flow. I think I'm going to just run a glass pack type muffler as a resonator under the car somewhere. It's when you add a resonator tip that removes the low frequency from the exhaust note that leaves it sounding bumble beeish.
