you can't really do that if somebody throws you the keys to a 20 year old sports car when you're 16. you're going to spend too much time doing maintenance and wrecking.

in his mind already. If you're going to start working on cars, might as well learn young, having to work on something yourself; Instead of being that kid fresh out of high school whos daddy bought him a brand new car, when you pay for something yourself you tend to have more respect for it and take better care of it. Granted he can't drive it yet, but it will give him an opportunity to get used to owning a car and take care of simple things that may be wrong with it(what 240 doesnt have at least 1 thing wrong with it?) that way when he is able to drive it he isn't driving a pos around he just picked up off craigslist for 100 bucks. I don't know why half of you are still on this forum with all the bitching about how much you've spent, its not like anybody made you buy a 20 year old car and everybody knows car modification is an expensive hobby/lifestyle. All I'm saying is if it's what you want then don't hesitate, do your research, make sure you know what you're getting yourself into before you take the leap. Don't do it to fit in, because then you won't enjoy it, and make sure to keep a good amount of cash in your savings just in case something does happen, because something is bound to go out, just make sure you are prepared for it. if you have anymore questions pm me Good luck

I got my first 240 when I was 16. I also did my first 5 speed swap at 16 on the same 240. im now 17 and in the Army, and drive a Geo tracker. Cars are a Huge investment!!! if you really want to do it make sure. buy a running 240 and just build really slowly. enjoy the car, but dont go crazy with it. but at 14/15 years of age I would save all the money you earn. I went a whole year only spending 50 bucks when I was 13. All so I could buy a car. Now im in the Army. have some good money. have a lot of parts, and no 240. haha. but seriously. take your time...dont rush

at 14 you should be building MODEL cars, all getting anxious about a history test, all wondering what the food will be tomorrow (maybe its pizza? i hope its pizza), all trying to hit on girls, and then not knowing what to do at a date, riding bikes and scamming your friends for capri suns, saying things like "dirty sanchez" and "balls" all day, all getting awkward boners in class for no reason, and then hoping you don't get called to the board to do some math problem you weren't paying attention to, because you straight got a inconvenient boner and today HAD to be the day you wore basketball shorts.
not fucking with cars. edit: didnt you basically post this same thread, but use a ".....NOT" joke in it about a year ago?

I got some friends who wanna get 240s just because they "look sick" I just say straight up: "Dude no." I mean im sure everyone here agrees that our cars arent exactly in the best shape and is a bitch at times to maintain. Not worth the money unless you're truly dedicated and not in for no fucking fad

When I was 14 I wanted a Metallic blue 91 Integra with an Darth Vader body kit.
Thank God I waited until I was 17 to buy my first 240... Don't buy a project car when you're 14. Just don't. |

started messing with cars when i turned sixteen. i was into trucks then so i lifted a 92 pathfinder. mostly suspension but i was still clueless on how it all worked. started my s13 project when i was ~20 and it was an AWESOME eye opening experience. imho my passion for driving has made me what i am today. i dont work on cars mostly for joy but i do it so i can beat the shit out of it and DRIFT! its a great stress reliever and Its also nice to step back and see what you build. it really depends on how strong your passion for the hobby is. when i was in school i was broke as shit cause all my money went to the car but thats what i wanted. its sad that my project pretty much have an unlimited fund but its easy for me to pass a great deal on clothes/other toys. i always tell people this though, my hobby has made me a better mechanical engineer because it is all pretty much related.

I agree, this is a hobby if you're overflowing with money. I've spent 20k+ on my 240 which initially cost under a thousand dollars. I have a fast car, but it's still not done believe it or not. All that money could be spent on so much more in life. Believe me.
If you're getting into mechanical engineering, mechanics, or something like that then you can consider it as worth it.. otherwise if you're doing it for fun you will get carried away and maybe even grow out of it. My father for one, he used to modify euro cars when I was a kid, so that made me love cars, but you know what he is so not into cars now, he still loves fast cars and whatnot but he always tells me not to speed even though he did hehe My track car whoops ass, but you know what, all that money put together little by little, I could have built a v8 mid engined kit car or something... ah well. |

on my third 240 since i was 18, im 22 now. started with a 1990 sentra automatic my parents bought me for a first car. slow as balls, but the cleanest sentra youd ever see, inside or out. i drove it like a bat outta hell, sportscar or not.
then i needed more than 25whp (or so i thought), took a LOAN out to pay for the first 240. i, stupidly, am indirectly still paying on said loan. bad idea. this was when noone knew what a 240 was, there was NO local scene, nothing. so i got bored with a stock (cus i was poor, and woulda riced it out anyway) coupe and sold it for a 1993 celica gt (MISTAKE 2). celicas are pieces of shit in case you didnt know. took ANOTHER loan to pay off the 240 loan, plus the additional money for the celica. ugh. bad idea. then my ass wised up a little. found a MINT hatchback, clean as fuck. broke even from selling the celica. still had the loan out for about $2300 at that point. but i had a 240 again, local scene was picking up, motivation was high, funding was not. it got cheap coilovers, a good washing, and i flossed that car like it was god. it DID look GOOD, and i beat the shit outta it, touge'ing before i knew anyone else did it, i just liked the crazy roads in my area, through the mountains. then, friend drove my car one time, less than a mile, totalled it. my pristine baby was gone. on 240 #3 now, hand built, a FREE shell from a friend who heard about the other guy wrecking my car, $8k in it right now, havent touched the motor/exhaust. car is stock KADE. its spraypainted cus paints not a priority. but i have my suspension half done, new wheels/tires, 5 lug, z brakes, alum ds, tomei diff, the list goes on. i started to lose motivation cus now my car handles better than ANYTHING in my area, so i really didnt have to work hard to be faster in touge runs... and then, black ice, my car @<15mph, and a curb decided to join forces. front susp is mangled on driverside. so here's my motivation, fix it, or have no daily. its a shitty feeling. your only car is a project, thus you MUST fix it. its not a hobby when its a requirement. if you want a 240sx, buy a daily, slow fwd, reliable car. sure it wont get the ladies wet like a well built 240 will, but that shit will get your girl to and from points A and B. thats a LOT more attractive than "my badass 240, in my garage, is gonna be SO cool again, once i fix all the mangled suspension bits" ahhaahah.... on that note, i need to get off my ass and do a damage assessment right now of what i need to order from PSM. the touge addict inside me hopes i need to replace all the arms/rods the part of me who pays the bills tho, is hoping not to go that route. touge>logic btw, youre 14/15? how the hell does that work? you gotta be 14, cus if you were 15, you wouldnt be caught dead being called younger. but if youre 14, you wanna sound older. so youre 14. i just nancy-drewed the answer to my own question |

Well at least he's smart enough to ask advice instead of just trying to do it. Kid I say wait till you are 16 or 17 and see if you still even want a 240 by then

Well just pretty much read through the whole thread...And here's my advice, If your passionate about cars be it Rich or Poor, It doesn't matter you will spend money on it and enjoy every minute of it...Of course it doesn't make sense, but all the Cents never makes sense in the car game...You Lose period...Now if you love cars it wont matter to you, but for others they will be like what a waste of money, etc.....Which brings me to my next point all the people saying "Don't do it, Save your money, etc" Kinda sounds like the people saying don't smoke with a tube stuck down there throat...Why the fuck are you doing it? lol, I'm pretty sure your all on the forums for a reason and this kids here to learn and seek advice from others that are supposed share that passion with him....I say go with want you want in life...Its kind of hard to have two priorities in life I tried skateboarding and cars doesn't really work out...But if your willing to do sacrifice some to enjoy cars and Tuning them by all means go for it....

funny thing to note.
there is actually a thread on nico forums called the kid and I or something which documents a 15 year old canadian kid and his wrenching nerd dad building an s14 with an s14 blacktop swap in it, kid did most of the wrenching on the car, but obviously daddy is who put the cake into the oven concerning money. It's a really good read.

guy above me and falkon240 here is a solution to your problems, try to be more entertaining sociably, and also get better jobs if your car is draining all of your fund age, learn to hustle and stop crying you missed out on shit like your 50 years old. Your big boy hairs are barely coming in.
You wont have money to do shit enjoyable in your life until you're in your 30s-40's anyway. All you need to worry about us hobbies and pussy when you're 17-29 and prioritize your money based off your want and needs. Because you may never get another chance in your life to do stuff like this again. Some dipshit on these boards is only 28, same age as me and put his 240 up for sale when he went to the superior nissan meet because he felt like an old fart hanging out with a bunch of kids with hackjob cars... age shouldn't matter when it comes to cars, I kick it with a 55 year old dude into starions and his son 24... Flyberts dad is another example of cool dad into cars, and I can tell from the work he does for his son and Dousans car that he's one of those guys that doesn't regret any decision's he made in his life. Now his skills he picked up along the way are helping his son build his car better where knowledge like that is INVALUABLE. I think a lot of you miss that. anyway.

I didn't read any of this thread until these last few posts because I could honestly give a flying fuck either way, but I think anyone who's not even old enough to drive yet who's already so hooked on buying a 20yr old piece of shit deserves all the problems he's going to encounter with it. If I could do it all over again at age 16 I'd buy the most dependable car I could get and just drive the damn thing, saving my money for more important shit like strippers, coke, and booze. This 240 fad is so over it's depressing and we've still got kids who are cutting grass in hopes of owning the dream one day. They should all at least have a dream that's worthwhile like a Ferrari or something cool, not a rusted out hatch with a stripped interior, bashed quarters, and blown shocks.

Dude, just do it. get the car. stop worrying about what the others are saying about "dont do this dont do that" fuck that. do what YOU want.
You just need to realize what you're getting into. it's nothing bad really. it's a hobby that turns into a passion. i say do it bro. have fun...you only live once and you dont have time to feel like you missed out on doing what YOU wanted to do. |

for reals... this thread is going no where...
turning into nico. look into ziptied threads. dont waste your time with cars. learn things now and do them later on your own car. key is to learn to weld. than motor work. that's what builds cars. do very well in school become a engineer and then just hire a mechanic to work on your car. haha popin a boner in class..... o that brings me back to highschool. tuck it under your belt or just point it up is all u can do....

IMO building a car isnt fun unless you can test drive all the things you do to it. Yea, you see alot of build threads where people buy all their parts and throw it all together before they ever drive it, but they're all older, and have had the behind the wheel experience. For you, Id recomend starting to drive on a stock platform, and mod as you go along. Youll learn alot more and I think give you a more enjoyable experience.
