timing chain replacement intervals
How often or what signs does your ka24de give you until you start noticing a timing chain replacement?
I want to do re-seal on my s14, and I'm debating whether to replace the timing chain or not.. I don't want to replace it if it's not needed. Anyways, how do you folks recommend checking to see if it needs replacing?

Around 110,000-130,000 they start to make noise. But they should go 160,000-200,000 without replacement.
honestly if you have access to it there is no reason not to update it. some KA24DE have an older style "outdated" tensioner that will allow physical harm to come to the engine. I am not sure what years they fixed that in, I am not a KA knowledge base. But as the old saying goes, " if you are in there anyways, might as well..." |

ka24's are known for the timing chain guides to get chewed up over time. the whole timing set up on them is SUPPOSED to be CONSIDERED a non serviceable deal, and by that I mean the timing parts are supposed to last the life of the engine but we know that is not true. Most of them start making noise and from that point on it does nothing but get worse and the guides will actually come apart and cause even more problems, which i am sure you do not want to encounter.
Replace all the the guides, tensioner and chain. SIDE NOTE: DO NOT keep the upper guide piece that is right ABOVE the upper chain. remove that particular one and leave it off, it is recommended by nissan service to not replace that particular one as it causes more problems that it would if it is just not there.

I recently changed mine at 220,000 miles. I’m not sure if it had ever been replaced prior or not. The signs my car gave me was that it started to make a "whining" noise from the front cover (It sounded like a bad power steering pump) and the car would not time correctly no matter what way the distributer was in. When I pulled the old chain the guides were completely worn and the chain was about 1/4 of an inch longer than the new one. Also it sucks pretty bad doing it in the car. I would definitely recommend doing it now if you have the motor out or already apart. Even if you don’t think it needs it immediately.

I have seen several ka's that sound like it is knocking ( rod or main bearing knocking, but it is easy to tell the sound is in the front of the engine rather than inside the engine)
