Oh yes, overlooked this one. How hard would it be to find a clean example?

I live in CA and I DD a 90 KA24E hatch
It's completely stock and I'm in love. Perhaps later I can change to a twin-cam then later on an LS swap that follows smog. I hate how you can't legally have an SR/RB though. RBs are so cheap in the Colorado area |

I use to daily and track my 240 KA24DE with no problem. Started out with simple coilovers and a 2way LSD. As I got more in to drifting I started to do more upgrades full adjustable arms, bucket seat and steering wheel. The more and more I got comfortable with the sport the more upgrades that came with it to solid subframe bushings and aluminum engine mounts. The car now sits as a full track car with Sr20, angle kit and fully gutted interior with cage.
What I'm trying to say is you can never stick to one simple mod when it comes to track days. I now drive a beat up ford to daily because taking the 240 out on the street is a headache plus it's to sketchy to park it around CA roads.

Remember Halo the 240 is now the new Honda, simple to steal. Get a good security system, but even then its still a risk.

Daily driving a 240sx with solid subframe bushings, motor mounts, no sound deading SUCKS. I went from a 240 daily to a lexus, never knew a car could be so smooth, but the 240 comes out on the weekends. Its true what they say though, parking a 240 in CA streets is sketchy, makes me feel uneasy whenever i have to park it somewhere.
Summery: Avoid the headache, get a daily, track/ weekend drive the 240.

I've said this in another thread, the is300 handles like a boat. I've driven my friends with stiff coilovers and struts bars front and back. Still handles like a boat.

I still vote for a 240, but another option is a BMW E30.

Since I put new sensors in, I think it was about 23/28mpg and that's when I don't floor it. Got new O2 sensor, ECU temp sensor, air filter, plugs.
Daily driving a 240sx is so much fun. Its driving a car from a different time period when everyone was on the verge of something new. Technology was advancing and society as well; it reflects the design and feel of the 240sx. The only thing I worry about now is security. Sure it's nice to drive a nice car, but there are people who eye ball my car too. Then again any car is susceptible to theft. You would just have to invest in an alarm system, gps tracking and kill switches if you want peace of mind. As for comfort, keep in mind the age and era as well as the purpose of the car. It's not something I would take cross-country with me or across states. It's more a dedicated fun/sport car meant for quick bursts. I stripped everything in the interior leaving dash and front seats. It's a quirky and flimsy car but with the right upgrades can be a solid platform. I bought the car because of how cheap and easy it is to fix. The RWD platform as well as manual transmission. The aftermarket parts are endless and you can fine-tune it to whatever you like. Buy one now before the price goes through the roof like the Supra did. I bought my 240sx for $1,300 and have spent upwards $1,500 restoring it. It's not for the faint of heart mind you; you need to know that these cars are old and need fixing. Be prepared, don't buy a 240sx and expect to be track star overnight. Like 4chan's /o/ board would say, buy a Honda Civic for a first car. It's reliable, cheap, doesn't eat gas and can be a good "learner" car. |

Sc400 v8 would be a good choice. Not sure if it's a Light car or if the stock v8 has good power though, something to look into maybe?

So sorry for the late reply. Anyways, they're f'ing awesome. Know a couple dudes who drift in 'em. One has a 325 (6 cylinder) and that thing is awesome and hasn't failed yet and handles the abuse very well. He even drifted the shit out of it with an open diff and could keep that thing sideways for so long. And the other dude has a 318i and the 4 cly it has enough power for some sliding, but would be nicer boosted or sc'd. I had a 318is and loved it.
if you do go the e36 route you have to get a 325/328. Lots of more support for the 6 cylinder and just stock is pretty good. Also, just about every BMW engine is easy to stuff in that thing if you ever wanna get kinky with it. Would love to have an e36 325 myself but I'm way too attached to my two tone coupe. |
