"Properly cleaning intake runners and EGR valve for Smog Checks"

anybody have any knowledge on this? i'm looking for a step by step guide to PROPERLY cleaning your intake runners and EGR valve to pass smog.
preferably using carb cleaner or some form of liquid cleaner.

i've searched the forum and googling and haven't found a guide on it.
i've tried the pipe cleaning brush method and it didn't completely work for me.
i've heard to spray the throttle body with carburetor cleaner but..is there a proper way of doing this? (eg; engine off/on, over night, etc..?)

i need to get this clean this weekend so all suggestions welcome~

Other than the egr-valve you should clean other parts of the egr system, such as egr-bpt, and bpt tube. A thin wire brush will get alot of the crap out of there. Also need to inspect the rubber L-shaped hose below the egr valve. I think the best option before cleaning is to vacuum test those components to make sure they are working properly. You can just buy a Mityvac and google the instructions for egr testing.

As for the upper intake manifold, I remember reading that there are a few allen bolts on the top that you can remove and then just spray carb cleaner to clean. Probably the most thorough way to clean it is to remove the cover, but you risk warping it.

thanks for the tips! i actually sea foam'd the intake system the other day. definitely runs a little smoother..hopefully it helped.
we'll see how it drives this week and see what i need to do next weekend.

I poured fuel system cleaner into the tank a few days ago with 91 oct. and seafoamed the throttle body for about a good 5 minutes.

now i want to clean the egr system.
i tested to see if the vacuum works...it does.
the egr valve does lift when engine is revved.
so i'm assuming i just need to clean the system internally.
what is the simplest way to go about cleaning the egr system?
im not looking for "spotless" type cleaning..just a decent clean.
i still have some seafoam left and i just picked up a spray can of carb cleaner.

hmm..nobody really answered this but i'll just post my final results.

after spraying seafoam through the throttle body to clean the intake system and pouring a bottle of fuel system cleaner into the gas tank..then driving around on 91 octane for 1 week..i passed 9 points below the maximum limit. loll

[i'll post pictures of the NO ratings later..]

1. Good running EGR helps reduce NOx (Clean the BPT! It's that saucer looking thing similiar to the EGR only just the saucer, replace vacuum tubes. Spray each hole on the BPT with de-carb)

2. New Spark Plugs help burn fuel better.
