Sr E30 318
We are just finishing up our SR powered E30 318 for the New England Hillclimb Championship. Thought some folks on here would be interested.
Here is the engine mounted in the car. gearbox mount A 240 is underway and I will post pics as we move forward. Other pics of the E30 can be found at DSG E30 SR |

haha, bismo, thats a good one.
Car looks great! I can't wait to see pics of it in action. Hillclimbs are my second favorite type of event, but I didn't think we had many here in the US. Any pics or links to the racing series? -Matt

Interesting to say the least, but why would you when there are so many options of BMW engines that were available as well... This is one of those "hybrid because the fuck we can" kinda projects...

Alex used to use a 4G63 motor with a mightymax transmission but the transmission was only designed for 100-150bhp not 350. Needless to say, it didn't last long in competition. I talked alex into selling the 4G63 and going with an SR for 1) Its very cheap (1400 for motor/transmission) and very cheap to upgrade and there are countless upgrade options, including for gearbox internals 2) Its very light (motor AND tranny weigh less than the 4G63 motor alone) 3) It was designed for RWD 4) The engine and transmission fit perfectly in an E30 chassis, even the shifter comes out in the stock location.
We're getting ready to start an E30 M3/ SR swap for a customer. I'll post some pics when that is in progress. I finished my chassis mounted jacks for my circuit/hillclimb 240 today. If anyone is interested in doing this for a competition car it is very cheap and makes the underneath of your car very accessable. Regardless of how they look, they are very safe (safer than regular stands) and after working on various rallycars with similar setups I can say that working on a car with normal jackstands is a serious PITA. Here are some pics. Overall cost is probably about $150. Metal supplies were ~50, probably close to an entire 240 size tig tank, 1 20 size mig tank for the chassis reinforcement on the outside and inside and approx 8 hours of work. I'll be stich welding the chassis and continually working on a 4130 18pt cage and will update as that progresses |

Honestly, the E30 M3 S14 motor is one of my all time favs. To get more than 250 bhp out of them is a decent amount of money though. Group A motors still go for upwards of 10K and DTM motors are high 20s. An SR is 1K. In Alex's class he is up against cars with serious power so to be competitive at all he would need at least 300bhp. There are plenty of ex-DTM E30s running in germany and austrian hillclimb c'ships but the series here is lower budget (scirocco with busch series 600 hp motor & audi sport quattro E2 gearbox & drivetrain) All of the series events are tarmac/asphalt so its not like pikes peak. If you have power you can usually put it down.
Just a european hillclimb vid to get people pumped up... http://www.videoconcept.com/Clips/cam4.wmv The E36 in there is powered by a Judd F3000 V8... You wonder where all the Ex F3000, F1, Group B, DTM, STWs go... |

From what we have heard, the SR stock oil system is more or less fine for shorter duration circuit and hillclimb use. I know JUN developed an oil pump for their JGTC SR20 in the mid 90s but as most people on here, we are on a budget. With how cheap SRs are now its much cheaper to buy a new motor as it would be to design a dry sump system or buy a 500$ JUN higher flow pump.

From what i have heard, the sr has oil starvation problems at high rpm and high g-loads. But anyways..the reason i'm gonna ditch my sr is the very opposite of what you said. Sr's are getting expensive. And they are expensive to modify. But cheers on your project. kick ass

I guess I don't see how one could get starvation with the pump burried in the oil reservoir. As you probably know the pickup is periously close to the bottom of the stock pan, probably 1cm or so from the inner wall. With 5 qts in there it would be under 2 inches of oil. With the baffles in the pan and the extra capacity I don't forsee any problems. Especially with road courses the way they are, seldom a turn lasting longer than 3 seconds or so.
