Remove the plastic peice from the wheel well on the right (facing the car) side of the car. You will see a black box sitting there right underneath the box which holds your air filter. If I remember right its just held in 4 screws. Simply take them out and pull the box off if it doesn't fall right off. Then put your plastic part in the wheel well back on and your done.

I've heard it adds like 3hp but I didn't feel any difference. It sounds GREAT! Not really loud or anything but give your car this awsome growl sound in the mid rpm range. I took a bunch of pics of the steps...I'll see if i can get them up tomorrow although you should be able to do it without them.

There are no possable problems with doing this. The only thing this does is its just a hollow box, that acts as a resinating chamber to make your intake quiter...kinda like the muffler on your exhaust, cept a little different. I'll do my best to get pics and stuff up tomorrow.
And Bboy, no. If your tire was off you'd have more room to work with, but its so easy to take off you don't need much room. |

DSC, I belive it's a little different for the S13.
Are you talking about removing the y-pipe? you don't want to remove the resonator box, without putting on an aftermarket cone filter. Otherwise say goodbye engine life. To remove Y-pipe I removed the Resonator b/c it made it a little easier. Loosen screws holding the MAF onto the Resonator box, and wiggled the end out. There are two screws that hold the box down, and two on the bottom towards the maf that have rubber mounting peices on them. There is one screw that hold the Y-pipe to the resonator box, and one screw that hold the y-pipe to the body, behind the headlight. Go ahead and remove those before starting. Once you've removed the other two screw that hold the resonator, just put your hands on it and push it towards the Fan shroud. The rubber peices should just pop out of the mounts. Everything else is cake. You may ne able to remove the Y-pipe w/o removing the Resonator, just wiggle stuff around. It's really not hard. I just took that stuff out b/c I was also cleaning the Throttle body, and MAF at the time. |

chimp, you're talking about the air box...you don't want to take that off unless you have a cone filter, like you said. The resonator box is down in the fender well on the other end of the y-pipe. When the y-pipe splits, one branch goes forward behind the headlight housing and the other goes down into the resonator box. Gains are neglible, maybe 1-2hp on the top end, but it does sound good. You may want to check your filter element more often, because with the bigger air track, more dirt can get in.

you'll also want to remove the pipe that goes from right behind the ?grill? to the y-pipe, the only part you leave in is the Y-pipe because it has the ?air temp? sensor plugged into it, and the airbox itself

S13's don't have an air temp sensor on the y-pipe. The only sensor on the intake track is the MAFS, which is behind the airbox, which is behind the y-pipe, which is behind the headlight housing. |

I took out the y-pipe. Did not realize there was a resonator box down there too. I guess I would've noticed that when I get my CAI soon.
I like the way it sounds without the Y-pipe in there. Makes the car growl. Not as cool as the Injen Short ram I used to have. But a close 2nd. (Edited by Sykikchimp at 12:34 am on Feb. 19, 2002) |

No no... there is no sensor what so ever in my s14 y-pipe when I took it off when installing the Injen intake...
The only sensor near the y-pipe was in the airbox itself, and stupid Injen didn't make the holes in the intake large enough to accept that sensor... but that is the only one there. Take off that #### y-pipe if you're so inclined... -Jeff |

Ok so pretty much we are in the agreement to take off the y pipe including the resonator box? So then you just move the whole air filter box back to where the Y pipe was? Sorry I’m trying to understand without looking and before I go to do this

You'll be sucking in warmer engine bay air, but you'll have less of a restriction...so the gains and losses pretty much even out to little to no performance gain....do it to make it sound good, not for free hp.

Then wouldn’t it just be best to keep the Y pipe but take the resonator off so u keep the cold air coming in? But also get the sound u want? I think I’m just going to take my resonator off and cover the hole it leaves with a improvised ghetto home made filter hehe

Don't cover the hole. It acts as a channel to the outside and allows some cooler air to enter the engine bay from the fender well.
Leaving the y-pipe and removing the res. box isn't the best of both worlds. The y-pipe is the main restriction, not the res. box. So even though, you'll still be routing some cooler air, it's still restricted....again, gains are neglible. |

Remember this is not a mod you do for HP, it's done b/c it sounds cool. and honestly the air up near that corner of the engine bay doesn't get that hot, and there is a heat shield on the exhaust manifold. so it won't hurt anything.

also.......to let more sound throught, you can take the hood lining out.....saves 1-2lbs and should make it a little (probably unnoticeable) louder
i know this is also for heat protection, i took mine off a month or so ago, and especially with the black paint i will be monitoring temperatures somewhat carefully |
