umm no... more like 10W-30 for our Turbo cars. Higher the viscosity, the better. 5W-30 is too thin in my oppinion. The turbo will cook the hell out of that grade!
Check the FAQ next time before you get flamed.

you do realize that proper lubrication in an engine is essential for proper function and heat management right? and the problems of proper lubrication are exacerbated by forced induction, higher revs, higher compression, higher hp, etc etc right?
taking a "What the hell!! it'll work good enough!!!" is a pretty ill advised approach to oil... |

yes i know..but i thought since i ran 5w-30 in subaru wrx and this motor is turbo'd also it would be fine...i also read that 5w-30 is the recommended oil weight for this motor..so if not this weight then what one should i be running then?

all engines are different, 1 turbo or 1 n/a to another isnt made equal..theres more than one way to skin a cat, it just depends on how those industrious japanese engineers decided to make the cat go faster haha...if they suggest you run 5w30, then thats what id run, unless of course someone here says "well wait, heres a problem with running that, and heres why"
for instance on my 2002 civic si, honda suggested running 5w20 but we discovered that it would cause cam gauling issues and honda only did it for economy, and instead running 5w30 was the correct weight, but you wouldnt know that unless you ask... sorry for jumping on your case...i was just in a touchy mood because on another forum i have some kid making threads on top of threads post whoring so he can sell and im a mod and he just came back from a ban today...grr |

ive just been throwing some valvoline max life 10w30 i had sitting on my shelf into my ka24e...the motors a sack of crap, i think thats the right oil to run in this engines case, it has 170kish, and i ran this stuff in my 86 civic si from 320k to 365k beating it to death and it never gave me one hickup...hopefully i can get the seals to soften up, its slowly burning less oil as ive used the max life but its still dropping a quart every 800miles (it was doing it every 600, so its not as bad as it was) haha its not leaking, ive checked, its just burning oil |

If you run 5-30 in your car, and you live in a place where you see 90+ temperatures...
I would give your SR about a month to live driving on city sreets, and after a road trip/hour drive, you will probably spin a bearing. It even has a *5w-30 note in the FSM, saying 5w-30 is 'not suitable for extended driving* 10w-30 is acceptable, 10-40 is a good balance. 15-50 is the best, but offers shitty cold starts.

honestly if you really want your engine to hold up to high temp and high stress conditions, you absolutely cannot go wrong with redline oil...my father has been running it for nearly 50 years in his racecars and high performance vehicles and i run it in all my street cars and its fantastic

I have a copy of the FSM (S14 SR) and there is indeed a graph showing what weight oils to use depending on ambient temp. It does say that "5w-30 or 10w-30 is preferable regardless of driving conditions" but the graph shows that you shouldn't use 5w-30 if the ambient temp is above 59 degrees fahrenheit. I use 10w-30 in the winter and 10w-40 or 15w-50 in the summer. I live in GA where it gets hot and humid.

i use 20w50 castrol oil or amsoil in my s13sr w/ a 19row oil cooler, but it's used at willow springs in temperatures of 100+ degrees fahrenheit in the summer. no problems for the past 3 years.
i also use 20w50 in my daily driver ka s13 in san diego. no problems in 6 years.
