SR20 cam removal
hey guys just a quick question i resently had a rocker arm come of and a few broken shims and am gonna remove the cams to re shim the head. my question is that the engine is not at TDC and i dont want to ratate the crank to put it at TDC because of the rocker arm is off the srpings. so what is the best way for me to go about removing the cams without jacking up any vlaves!! thanks guys!!!

If you have bad stuff going on up there, then you made a good choice by not rotating the crank. Taking the cams out without being at TDC on isn't going to mess up anything... That is only important when putting it all back together. Remove everything per the FSM, and take it to the pros to have everything measured out/machined etc. Since your knowledge seems limited, it may be a good idea for you to have a mechanic put the block/head back together for you; or make sure you do it in the company of someone who knows the ins/outs of the task at hand.

thanks for the input!!! i know removing the cams without it being on TDC will not jack anything up but obviously rotationg the crank with no cams installed is not a good idea.

^^It's not a big deal. Once the cams & everything floating around in there are out, you can move the crank all day long. Only when putting it back together will it be crucial to have everything back in the right position...

Take the cams out (outside bolts first in a cross pattern) then put the engine to top dead center with timing chain marks at the top (eleven rotations max i believe)
OR You can zip tie each cam gear to the chain and then remove the gears from the cams. Remove the cams, fix your issues and reassemble. Cam gears will be correctly mated to the chain so you have no worries or need to rotate the crank. Remember when installing the cam cap bolts that the torque spec is inch pounds. It is equivalent to 9 ft pounds I believe, which is not much at all. You will snap a bolt in the head if you don't follow spec. Good luck man. Let us know how it goes. |

thanks for the help man i will get on with this and post how it goes. does it sound right that with cams installed and all shims and everything in that the gap between the cam lobes and the rocker arms should be .015??? i have solid pivots and upgrated springs aswell as 260 cams. just wanna make sure i get it correct this time before firing it up again!!! only had it running about ten minutes after the rebuild and it snaped 2 shims lol
