Brake Pad Suggestion

I know that there has been some other posts on this subject, but I couldn't find anything that suited my exact purposes....

I have a 98 240 Non ABS with 30mm Aluminum Z32 front calipers, stock rears. I have the 1 1/16 MC, but I plan to just use my stock one because it is an Auto MC, and I am only doing the fronts. I am about to redo the brake system and put everything on, but I need suggestions on which pads to buy. My car is a daily driver with VERY OCCASIONAL track use (Like once ever so far). I would prefer to have pads that don't wear too fast, don't dust too much, and don't squeak.

I have seen people recommending Hawk, Project Mu, EBC Greenstuff, Axxis Ceramic, etc..... Just looking for opinions from anyone who has been there.

Nate

Axxis Ultimates (ceramics) are great for daily driving...

a friend of mine had Endless brake pads.. those seemed to work great with stock rotors/lines etc...

I'll take close-ups of how the dust has etched into the rim. I wash my car atleast once a week and the dust comes off in rivers.

i strongly recommend project mu, a bit expensive but well worth it, i think best upgrade was nismo braided lines, much better feel in pedal and relatively cheap

hmm... i have the same issue. i always thought it was b/c i did a shitty rattle can paint job on my wheels. on the upside the wheels have a cool red tint to them.

i've heard that higher end hawk pads ruin paint along the doors and rear fender. the dust comes off so thick it actually stains the paint along the sides of the car.

are you guys running these pads on the track?

if you are, I guess the material is hot enough it will bond with the top layer of clear coat on your car/wheel paint. that sucks

just DD as well. kind of ridiculous IMO.

the higher end hawk pads are the ones that'll screw up your car's paint, so stay away, unless you don't care about the paint..

Well, sounds like the Axxis Ultimates are the way to go so far (Mu are a little too expensive, and probably overkill for me...)

Any other opinions?

I have Project Mu front and Project Mu D1 Spec rear.

They stop on a dime, except....

My parking brake is TOTALLY worthless unless I get the rears heated. I mean you can literally do 50mph, yank the parking brake and barely slow down when they are cold.

I wish Peformance Friction made carbon pads for the 240. I was in love with them on the Mustang.

It was by implication -- you posted right after aznpoopy said "i have hawk hps and they dust like a mofo.", and you said "Hawk HP's have etched my rims". Since you did not clarify exactly which pads you had, people are going to assume you are referring to HPS.

The Hawk HPS in every application I have seen stops well cold, has next to no dust and noise. HP+ is a completely different pad from HPS, HP+ is a semi-track pad that dusts badly, squeels loudly and performs under average when cold. That's what I tell every customer that asks, and I generally steer then towards HPS for street/autocross. I run HP+ myself but I am too lazy to wash my wheels or swap pads at the track, they work surprisingly well on the track.

As for Performance Friction, they make a wide range of pads as well, I have tried their Z-rated carbon-metallic street pads and I felt they had very poor bite vs. HPS. Their full track compounds (97, 01, etc) are supposed to be outstanding though.

I metioned two other times only saying HP. I have no interest in going to another Hawk pad.

I have not seen a 240 app from Performance Friction. Z-rated and Carbon Metallic are two diff pads. have you tried both?

I'm looking at carbotech bobcats right now.

Yes you referred to "HP" pads, but there is no "Hawk HP" pad, only "Hawk HPS" or "Hawk HP Plus". Not trying to start an argument here, just clarifying which pads you have for other readers, both "HPS" and "HP Plus" are under the "HP=High Performance" series but are two completely different pad compounds.

The PFC Z-rated *is* their carbon-metallic pad, they just call it "Z rated" for certain "high performance" applications. Taken from the PFC website:

"What is Carbon Metallic Z-Rated®?
Carbon Metallic Z-Rated® is the brand name given to a newer set of PFC compounds specifically designed for high-performance vehicles such as BMW, Corvette, and Mustang, SUV's, as well as for severe-duty applications and tow vehicles. An ultra high performance, integrally molded disc pad, Carbon Metallic Z-Rated® is the most advanced carbon based pad available. Delivers unrivaled pedal feel, stopping power, rotor compatibility, and quiet braking - offers the longest rotor and pad life at a lower cost-per-mile in it's class."

I tried all of these pads on my 300ZX, on Texas World Speedway and on the street.

To make a fair comparison, the Carbotech Bobcat and PFC Carbon Metallic should be compared to the Hawk HPS. The Hawk HP Plus is a different class of pad (should be compared to Carbotech Panther Plus), designed for different operating temperature; very true that it dusts badly and stops poorly when cold but to say it sucks because of that is somewhat unfair because that is not its intended application. Personally, in this class of pads, I prefer the Ferodo DS2500 because it is less dusty and noisy, but for certain applications they can be very pricey vs. the HP Plus.
