If you're lazy, just take it to a 1-day paint place.
If you're so so lazy, but want a decent paint job, prep your car and then take it to a 1-day paint place. If you're a true DIY'er and really want to save money in the long run, buy the materials and do it yourself. Does Home Depot rent compressors? A cheap $15 gun will get you decent results. It's all in the wetsanding. |

It's not as easy as it sounds though.
Remember, 90% of the work is all in the prep. We've taken 3 weekends so far just prepping the car for paint. Paint does not cover one single blemish. Take your time while prepping the car. Don't rush through it. |

in the process of my rattle can. using rustoleum industrial strength black. not many people go this far with spray paint so if any of you cheap guys like me want a writeup ill see what i can do. Its not really a 20ft job either. im really happy with the results. i want to clear it one day with an actual gun so it will last longer than acouple of years.
gotta be careful when wet sanding. you can see some spots where it took the paint off. ill need to touch that up. |

i just finished spray painting the tercel...pics soon on myspace...it did require alot of prep work but it was well worth it. it looks nice in satin gray with hot pink wheels. just need to tint the windows then tackle the suspension (new set-up on the way) and the exhaust (not necessarily in that order) and it will be complete
edit: ^^that carwash idea is good...wish i had though of that... |

I got a $10 spray gun on ebay. compressor was my dads. I block off the floors and walls. sand, primer, paint, clear, wet sand, buff. All done. Instead of being a lazy ass and wanting only to spend 2 hours, just spend the day and do it right! It'll save time and money a year from now.

I'm sure someone else already said this, but yeah, I highly doubt that Mark Arcenal's paint is rattle-canned. I don't get the sense that he needs to rattle-can cars, lol. That is a NICE color though.
Some of the people in this thread did good jobs though. I should try it on my spare aero, just for shits and giggles. |

just to resurrect a month old post...just finished doing over the hatch..it was white...some fucker broke it a couple months ago and a white one was the only one i could find...
its primered....black undercoat so the red will match properly..then red coat..then lots of clear...constant wet sanding and washing all th way through.. 600 grit 800 grit 2000 grit then rubbing compound after the last wet sand..wouldve been so much easier if i had a damn hand buffer... just finished a while ago..with some more buffing, a wash a wax and polish it will be near perfect... i stopped buffing actually because it was now getting shinier than my real paint...so im not gonna use polishing compound, which will only make the real paint look worse than this. couldn't get shots to show well enough how nice it is..even the flakes in the cherry red are showing... there are a couple spots that i can see that i doint get down enough with the 2000 grit paper..but for a first try with this procedure im pleased..beats having a white hatch...

Rattle-can can come out okay, as long as you choose a reasonable color, and do the right prep work and take your time. Alternatively, you can buy paint yourself and an HVLP sprayer and put down a far superior (to rattle can) paint job for just a little more $$. Thats all provided you have somewhere clean and not outside to spray.

it is true that a rattle can paint job can never compare to a real quality paint job..but if you have the time and dont mind you do learn alot about basic painting and prep techniques if you take your time...and hey..never hurts to pick up another skill
