Battery relocation part 1
okay so im almost done with the battery relocation thuing and decided i'd post pics cause some folx wanted the info.
here's how i did it i still need to get wire loom, put the summit racing box in and clean up my mess. FYI the summit racing box is pretty big. had i knew it was going to be quite so large in relation to the car i wouldn't have gotten it but what can ya do? i'll probably mount it on the drivers side where the optima is in that pic. |

you got no back seats?? id consider somewhere right behind the rear passanger seat for best weight balance to make up for the driver's weight instead of on the rear drivers side, but it probably wont make much difference.
Looks nice tho, what kind of spray/liner did you lay down in the back??

Well, one big ground in the engine bay was for the battery. Another one is for the engine. Just keep the one for the engine and ground it to the engine bay frame (level with your alternator), that way its not obvious. All i did was buy a Stinger distribution block from a stereo shop and ran my power wires from the relay box and starter into it. Then i ran the big 4 guage wire for the positive battery cable out of this distribution block and into the trunk. The distribution block can then be mounted somewhere out of sight in your engine bay. Its really clean and the wires are protected. I recommend using a distribution block for these reasons.

The box will fit neatly in the driver side corner, but it is a pain in the butt to remove the battery if you have to. Also if you drop anything in the rear quarter panel pocket (such as the lid wing nut) after the box is installed, forget about it. You'll understand once it happens. Also you can use the lid as a template of where you want the box and where you will have to drill. If I have time ill post up a pic!! As easy as it sounds, putting in the box is quite a pain in the butt. GOOD LUCK

Looks like he sprayed over the tar itself directly. Also If your using an optima battery. For regulation purposes all you would need is a battery tie down, since optimas are sealed. correct me if im wrong but I do know that is what is done in NASA racing. Also you wouldn't want something with weight like that right behind the passenger to go sailing rite into the back of them. a battery that small doesn't make as much weight change as you mite think. Weight balance is already fux0red on these cars i.e. driver side gansta lean. if your worrying about so much weight transfer. remove stereo equipment, that makes a big difference. muah haha........ Not to thread jack but which summit kit did you go with, my catalog has 2 available, does yours include tha vent hole. i'd be wondering how to get that to vent to the outside......

I used a battery box for a while, but I recently got a tray. I hated the box because it wasn't an exact fit for the battery so it would slide around in there a bit... I'll have to get some pictures...

where exactly did you drill your holes to connect it to the floor? I was planning on putting my relocation in the passenger rear but there's no room because of the gas tank, so I looked at the driver's rear and there seems to be more room above the exhaust so your able to access the studs from there. I have a hatch and I'm using the moroso battery box

no shit aaron it looks like he sprayed it himself.. that doesnt even answer my question... I was reffering to ask what did he use for the lining, weither it was a spray or a laydown type..and the battery wouldnt go sailing into the passanger if its properly bolted down anyways as topic of this thread is to relocate the battery the proper way.. Reading Comprehension goes a long way instead of picking on your friends post whenever they reply to a thread..

i kinda overlooked the bedliner question. yeah, i sprayed it in to give the trunk a halfway uniform look. its jsut some duplicolor spray in liner from autozone. the foam stuff is just carpenter foam that i sprayed and cut to form a solid hump that i'm gonna cover with something in order to give the rear seat delete a more uniform appearance.
idunno how great that idea was but in any case its a pretty good/lightweight sound deadening option. |

As for me i used the same stuff, just Autozone spray in bed liner. Its not near as thick and heavy as the real stuff. Im going over it again real soon because some places have chipped. Anyways mine is the one with the battery in the middle of the trunk/backseat merge. I put it there for best weight distribution. I usually have people ride with me, so i figure they kinda balance the car out. Honestly its in your head. I dont think it makes that much of a difference.

think of it like this. you're taking at least 30 lbs off the front and putting it at the rear of the car. thats like adding 60 lbs to the rear. in a my 2600lb car i think its noticible. then again, the only way to gauge that would be on a skidpad and that may not even be accurate.
whatever, scientifically it works. |

no, think of it like this. for every 26 pounds you remove from the front, or shift to the rear, your weight balance is evened out by one point. A 30lb battery could make the difference between a 49/51 and a 50/50 weight distribution.

Thats why i mounted my battery before my rear axles. I figure it would reduce the difference in the car's weight distribution. I dont know if its true but i do know my car is really close to 50/50 cause when i tried to jack the car up one day i wasnt paying attention and my friend and i were jacking it up toward the middle of the car and the car started to teter-toter on the jack stands LOL!!! Just like my old FD used to do.
