Just wondering, is it worth disconnecting the belt driven fan and hooking up an electric fan? How much of a power increase could I expect, 1-3hp?

Thx

I thought it was interesting, just waiting to see if someone has done it before, to see what they say. As long as you have a reliable electric fan this would be a good way of freeing up some extra horse's.

i think that it will give you about 3 hp i cut the a/c belt and could feal the difference in hp so if you take that extra pully it will lighten the load

I don't think it's worth it. Save your money for an ECU or a Pulley or something.

I've done it. No problems with overheating, but then again I do have a 98. Worth it? I think so, I need all the power I can get cause I got an auto. High end feels smoother, and no more wooshing sounds from the engine bay. That fan is heavy, prolly around 10-12 pounds.

I intend to do this one day. It should free up a little power and make the engine a tad more responsive since there's less parasitic loss. Plus you'll save a little weight...not much, but every little big helps.

Yeah. Ok. So now... I guess the question is what size fan to get, and how to mount it?

also, s13girl... they don't make decent pulleys for the 240. They're missing harmonic balancers or something.

I think this is better than a lightweight pullies. They're not harmonically balanced, which would shave a couple hundred miles from your engine's life.

Adding an electric fan wouldn't hurt, I don't have one, so only my A/C condenser fan is cooling the engine bay.

Well, you get more power out of a Pulley rather than just changing the fan. To each his own. I want a turbo!

i think it is too hot in the engine bay in a 240sx (just my 2 cents) but i was planning of adding a small electrical fan in addition to my machanical fan, is it worth it?

I took the crank fan off in combination to installing an ASP pulley. The RPMs rose so quick, response was stunning. On top of that, I advanced the timing 2 degrees to account for hot/multispark spark.
After 3 weeks since, I'm planning on installing an efan b/c the engine bay is too hot for my liking. W/out air cooling the engine, you can expect serious detriment in engine life. Besides, the engine makes better power at 180 degrees vs when the A/C fan kicks in (220).

Everyone is so paranoid about harmonic balancers since SCC mentioned it in a artical, yet everyone that has pulley's stand's buy them (atleast in the nissan group). Have you heard many reports of aftermarket pulley's ruining a nissan engine? These engines are made extremely well, and unless your pushing huge amounts of power I would not worry about a harmonic balancer. As for what size fan you should get, you should get a puller type fan as big as you can get it (or maybe 2 small one's)

But how long has the pulley been out? Maybe it hasn't had time to do any damage. I might give it a chance later on...but I can't risk the expense of warping my crankshaft right now.

There's people that have had pulley's on 300zx's for years, like 4+ years and no problems from the pulley, just saying it is something i would not worry about.

oh wait...I can't do that anyway if I want to stay in Street Prepared. It would bump me up a class b/c the only lightened pulleys allowed are accessory pulleys. Does anyone make accessory pulleys for the 240?

When you buy a pulley set they usually replace all the pulley's, so just leave the under drive pulley off and put the accessory pulley's on. Unorthodox makes good pulley's.

Puller type fan? What's that, and where can I get them??

Last but not least, what do I need to do in order to remove the fan, and how much should I take out?

A puller type plan would be a fan you put on the engine side of the radiator and "pulls" the air through the radiator, goto a local autozone or car store and just look for the fan's they should have some, as for removing the stock fan i don't know i would have to look at it, i don't have a KA engine so I really can't look and comment. Should'nt be that hard though look and see what you think you need to do to remove it then get your tools and yank it out of there.

Removing the crank fan is easy - remove the 4 10mm nuts and remove fan. No need to remove fan shroud. Replace 10mm nuts securely. Done.

Transient, you scare me. It's good that you ask questions though instead of just messing with it. That belt runs your water pump. No water pump equals engine strain, overheat, melting, death.

hehe, oops.

Then again, I never really looked either. If I had looked before posting I would have seen that it goes to the water pump as well.

Hey, thinking more about that though, would it be possible to take the belt off the fan pulley and get a smaller belt that would just run the water pump and anything else that that belt goes to, or are there other things driven by the fan pulley itself?

you can always take off your power steering belt. only takes a second to take off, and only a second to put back on if you don't like it. mine's been off for ohhhhh 6 months now. but thanks to my massive muscles, it's no problem turning the wheel

I heard there was an increase in engine power if there is no power steering. Did you notice a change, muscle-man?

actually it's easier to hold hard turns without the power steering, i believe. just because i have more control over the car. i guess if you live more towards the city, power steering is a blessing, but i live in more of a rural area than i used to, and sometimes i don't have to turn for miles.

and yep, i noticed a change, especially when shifting! it seems to keep the RPMs up, plus it revs up faster above 5800, so the combination of those things makes it a little faster. it's a trick that's mainly done at the track, and not on the street, but i think for this coming winter, that power steering belt is going back on.
