gap should be as large as the coil will jump
larger gap = superior efficiency when the gap is too large, electricity says ' no thx ' it doesn't want to jump the gap so you either gota push it harder 'voltage' increase will help jump the gap or secure what voltage you have there now better 'insulation' make sure the rubber and plug wires or whatever is between the coil and plug is 'great' Last resort is close the gap so the electricity will jump. This will reduce the spark area/volume = makes a weaker spark starting point for combustion = has its own consequences. it can even force you to add a degree of timing because the reaction can start so slow in some engines even more timing. So closing the gap too much in some engines has tuning implications. luckily sr20 is 'modern' (post 02' chevy = post ~90 nissan) and closing the gap has very little affect on quality of combustion. Mostly people will just close it up .028" most people will jump right to that because it "works". Thing is, 0.032" might also "work" and so might 0.038" or 0.042" you could be throwing away economy and efficiency by going right to the closed number. So I try larger gaps first 0.034" then gradually go down from there as necessary 'spark blow out' Just don't try this with nitrous. Its okay to blow out spark on gasoline but if you add nitrous then the engine can build up a supply of unburnt nitrous all over the place then spark comes back and BOOM its like, if the essence of superchargers could be captured in a liquid and you distributed that liquid through every orifice for a moment before applying a spark.... hope this was helpful and hilarious |
