you guys spend a lot of money on conventional oil.

at the dealership i work at we do oil changes for 12.95 which includes either an oem (if you have a toyota, honda or nissan) or CHAMP off brand (if you have a domestic) filter, and synthetic blend oil...

actually all of our dealerships offer this deal.

I on the other hand, do not take advantage of it though. my oil changes are expensive... $60 in oil alone lol. i use an in-line oil filter though, so i dont need to change that. just clean it and shit..

i change it before every track day, or 2-3k miles, whichever comes first.

cant wait to get the motor back in

technically if you came where i work you wouldnt be paying the people who are working on your car.

the actual cost of the oil+filter alone is more than what we charge for oil changes. so you are paying no labor

they have lost so much money doing it like that. but they pledged the price would be permanent..

mobil 1 20 or 15w 50
fram filter

.... the W stands for Winter

not many ppl know exactly what the numbers mean, and most people always think synthetic is "thiner" then dinosaur oil, fail

This thread made me laugh.

I have an 18 year old KA with over 180K miles on it and I use castrol GTX with a Fram filter.

That being said, it's an 18 year old motor why would I put synthetic in it.

I actually have one of those diesel old school cans laying around my garage for some reason... I think the oil in there is starting to turn a darker brown than its original golden color. It probably over 12 years old.

I tried castrol gtx aswell as alota other oils...mainly all high mileage cause my s14 is pushing almost 153k mi now. But for bout a year now I've been using strictly penzoil highmileage. Why...well because I had a minor oil leak somewhere and since using the penzoil I have yet to really see it lately. Now I do cause I got a valve cover gasket leak and possibly another gasket or seal leak.

For filters never tried fram cause I heard bad about them..so I used mobil, K&N, and purolator. I guess I'll stop using purolator lol, cause doesn't seem to be too many fans of them on here. If it matters I was using the pure one for the filtering quality stated on the box...but are they really that bad?

Thanks for posting..last time I buy a k&n when I can be saving money.

Anyway I'm due for an oil change...gonna go stp or do you guys think I should do bosch or purolator one instead. If you look on page one of that 1st link they show the bosh filter, and it has ALOT of pleats. But then I think about flow too. Which should I choose is the question

I've run GTX 10W30 in my 350 rwhp Rx7 for 4 years of abuse and it hasn't failed me yet The unreliable rotary is reliable for me. Oh and I use oem filter...but will be changing to STP cuz it's cheaper

That said. My KA is getting GTX and STP filter

Rotaries aren't as bad as people would believe, so long as you take care of them like you're supposed to... which is obviously different from a piston type engine. Obviously you know this already lol.

I use GTX 5w-30 and a Purolator Pure One filter. Reason I like the Pure One is that the outside has a sandpaper-like texture which makes getting it off by hand a breeze.

All I use is Redline; in my daily and my track car.

Granted for most people this is definitely a waste of money, but if it's available to you why not "make your car happy" j/k

In the daily I have:
Redline 10w-40; changed every 5000 miles
MT-90 in the tranny; changed once (and for good reason)
75w-90 in the diff; also changed once
and for shits I use Redline Power Steering fluid
Wix oil filters

In the track car it's the same but with an SR.

I don't really have a mileage that I change my oil at for the SR though, despite having a working odometer. Usually two or three times a year (when it's running haha)

You should be using 5/10w-30 in the KA and SR. Using the wrong weight is worse then any oil you buy.

i use conventional. i've used fram. now i use napa filters which are made by WIX. heard nothing but good things about them.

and everyone complains about the sr20 oil filter location. i still really dont have too much of a hard time getting it out, small amount of struggle but no biggie.

i've heard that the real reason it's dumb to put synthetic into an older motor is because the synthetic is so much more slippery, it slips through the seals.

whatever, i'm too poor to buy synthetic anyway so meh.

Turbo would probably be more happy with a 20w-50. Bearing clearances on most Nissan motors are set up for 30 weight. Wear your engines bearings out faster than you ever could on the turbo. Water Cooled Turbo's FTW.

Any turbo guys who haven't heard of Rotella should go get some. Synthetic 5w-40, super clean, excellent shear resistance as well. Combine that with an oversized purolator PL14610 (for SR) or a PL20195 (or motorcraft FL-400S) for the KA. and you're golden. Plus the shit's only $16-$19 for a synthetic jug at walmart.

I wouldn't use a API CJ-4 diesel engine oil in a gas engine. Sure the extra detergents will make you car run better for a while. Then you'll start getting cylinder wash down. Then we get posts on why is my compression so low.
