HELP! SOHC timing chain ticking really bad!
I just had my (SOHC) timing belt checked at a local shop and they said I need to replace my timing belt guides. If I have them do it they said it would cost me about $700 bucks. If I do it by myself, what is involved in replacing the top and bottom guides? What are all the parts I will need to get? The belt has so much play!

to do this, you'll have to take the air intake hose, fan shroud, fan, belts, accessories, and main drive pulley off
then you can take off the oil pump, distributor, and finally, the front face off the block at this point you'll see everything that needs to be replaced. More than likely, the long guide on the driver's side is non-existant at this point. you'll need to take off the old studs that it mounts to with an allen wrench and put a new one in place. push on your timing chain tensioner a few times, as it might be stuck. put everything back together.. you can use silicon sealant on the front cover. Changing the frong crankshaft seal is a good idea at this point too. you'll have bits and pieces of the old guide in your oil pan. you can try to remove the oil pan (which, apparently can be done with the engine still in the car, although I haven't tried) and take the pieces out by hand, or just leave them in. Leaving them in is somewhat risky, but the oil pickup in a SOHC is pretty big and has plenty of surface area to breathe. Hope this helps some. I just changed a bad guide this last weekend, but my engine was completely out of the car. If you have any specific questions, PM me or post here. |
