B&M Short Shifter Install
I put together a quick instructional article for the installation of B&M's short shifter for the 240.

Most of my thoughts are in the article. Enjoy!

Nice write-up! You should add two things:

**While you have the stock shifter out, you might as well replace the gear oil. Simply use the end of a 1/2" breaker bar to loosen the drain bolt from the tranny and let the fluid spill out. After it stops dripping, put the bolt back and fill the tranny from the top (5-1/8 pints, or roughly 2.5 quarts). Once you're done with this, install the shifter.**

**Tightening the two bolts from the bottom is quite difficult. The best method is to buy a set of ratcheting box-end wrenches and tighten with those as you can only get a few degrees on each turn of the wrench. Be prepared to have messy hands when finished!**

when i did my install i had no problems with using a regular open end to get all of the bolts. when you tighten them it might be easier to use a stubby wrench. just a heads up.

ok ,

a little critisism. you gonna have to specify HOW to remove the bolts on the tranny that are under the firewall. they are a bitch to get too, especially if you dont have real skinny arms. under the car didnt work that great either.

one thing can be done, you can drill holes in firewall in circles with a good drill then knock it all out into 2 holes (can also be cleaned up with a grinder nicely)
then when your done with shifter, lay 2 layers of Dynomat over it. i got it for like 10 bucks at a stereo shop just ask them for some pieces they have might get some free.

it took me 15 min to install everything including drilling. if you have skinny hands it could be avoided.

Yeah, those are the bolts you just need to use a ratcheting wrench with. You just slap the 10mm wrench on there and click away until it's loose. Takes like 2 mins per.

I didn't think to change my fluid, simply because I can't get the drain bolt out (stupid 206k frozen bolts) I changed the oil in my tranny when I did my clutch...by let it drain out the tailshaft before I put it back in the car

As far as the two front bolts, I'm not a tiny guy. I was able to use a normal box wrench to do the task. I do like the idea of drilling the holes and covering with dynamat. Very good suggestion. You should also try to hit it with some paint to keep it from rusting (Something I have to worry about here in Indiana). I'll add the idea to the page and give you credit as well.

Does it ever fall out of gear? The reason i ask is because i was driving my friends 93 civic HB with B&M short shifter. Everytime i took my foot off the gas the car would fall out of gear.

Uh, I have a '94 civic hatchback, and my old '95 civic coupe...both had the same B&M. Never once did it fall out of gear. There is something wrong with that transmission.

To answer your question, no, the shifter does not pop out of gear.

Thanks, man! I checked your updated page Yeah, I'm not a tiny guy either. The ratcheting box end wrench helped out a ton. Everyone should have a set of those in their tool collection.

Too bad I'm going to miss the meet! Argh! Oh well, I'll be in Cali!

Screwdriver or something of the like to break the seal. Then just pull really hard. You could have made a new thread for it.

Hey guys iam doing a new tranny clutch and fly wheel and short sifter all at the same time can i just put the shoft shifter in the new tranny before i install it or will it be a bitch to line it up into the hole while trying to bolt the tranny in..... thanks for all the help

yes it will be a "bitch" to put the tranny back in b/c the short shifter is going to stick out and hit the tranny tunnel and you won't be able to angle the tranny back in. save it for last b/c you can fill the tranny fluid through the shifter hole, which is big and you won't have to pump the tranny fluid in in like how fsm says to do it.

get lots of towels and cardboard ready. tranny fluid will spew out from the driveshaft hole, even if you drain thouroughly. there will be some fluid that wont come out and will fall out through the back and shifter hole if you tilt the tranny out.

PS. props for searching first. i remember importnut site was a great reference like 6 yrs back when people were doing z32 brake swaps. i used it to install z32 rears.

^ to add, if you don't want spillage cork the draveshaft hole and plug up the shifter with rags. When I did the 5 speed shop I only did the driveshaft and got some minor spillage from the top because we twisted and turned so that the trans. shaft would line up.

old thread but since its not mentioned isntead of drilling, u can just drop the transmission a little and unbolt the 2 bolts and bolt them back on.

i might as well add i installed a b&m short shifter from inside the car only without going under the car or drilling holes etc.

i do have small hands, but i was able to do it in 30 mins.

Im having trouble getting the oem shift plate off the transmission, seems like its been gasket sealed on. Any suggestions on removing it without dropping the transmission?

pry at it with a screwdriver. an angled one would work best.

Got it done. i went under the car and pounded the plate upward with a screwdriver and hammer.

My experience with this installation.

1. Somehow there's no space at all on my car for the front two bolts, so I had to the bolts on the mount to lower the transmission.

2. If you don't align the gasket right you will mess it up with the bolts. I had to go get another one.

why is there a thread for this? it took less than 20 min and was one of the easiest mods ive done...... you dont nee to drill holes, get under the car, or drop the trans....i have huge hands and got this done inside the car with basic tools.....
