GT2871 installation - DIY
5-7-08
Hey guys! first off i'd like to introduce myself. My name is Daniel and i've owned my 240 with sr swap for about 3 years. Here is my installation of the GT2871 .64. Took about 10 hours from start till finish. still need a tune, oil change and a few other various things. List of tools used: 3/8 rachet, 7mm socket, 10mm socket, 12mm socket, 13mm socket, 14mmsocket, 17mm socket, 18mm socket, 19mm socket 13mm open/box wrench, torque wrench, pliers (regular and extended 90degree types), thread lock, anti seize, various rachet extensions 3in 6in 10in, crescent wrench, swivel head 17mm socket to get the oil feed line banjo bolt out ,a 14 mm swivel head socket to get the manifold nuts off, there's more, just forgot This is the 14mm socket i used to take off the exhaust manifold nuts. It was the only one that i could find to get into those tight places without getting under the car. Also mind you that i have AC The 17mm socket looks the same only bigger when messing with the coolant return banjo bolt. There's quite a difference in the size of the gt2871 .64 (left) and the stock T25 (right) *Take note that the compressor inlets are clocked differently.* I opted for the divided iconnel exhaust housing but ended up mating up the stock t25 elbow with some modification to one of the elbow's bolt holes. A box of goodies from my stock t25 setup that i just took off. I used the stock dump tube and exhaust manifold and some various nuts and bolts from the old setup. *I upgrade to the megan outlet* Got started by installing some of the oil and coolant lines. used some teflon tape on the threads to ensure no leaks. I didn't take a pic of the t25 actuator but here is the difference in the hks actuator (left) and the gt28rs/gt2871 actuator (right). Turbo with the lines and the new HKS actuator on. Another picture of the turbo. Also just as a note: make sure to tighten all of the turbo bolts down snuggly. they usually come from the factory fairly loose. Another picture of the turbo. I had to use the t28 adaptor plates in order to clock the turbo properly in the s13 bay for the s13 piping. The new oil drain unit. the rubber tube was a bit** to put on under car. probably a DIY newbie mistake to wait till last. Here is a pic of it installed. A pic with the manifold and inlet and outlet pipes on. As you can see they are clocked the correct way with the adaptor plates. I used new gaskets during assembly to ensure a proper seal. here's a pic of the new setup on the car. i used the 7 layer gasket and scraped away the old gasket being careful not to damage the aluminum bock/head. Here's a pic of the underside of the car with the drain tube attached. Saved it for last as it was the toughest thing to put on snaking under the car. Also with the down pipe attached. used new gaskets. here's a pic of my Home Depot special recirculation tube. cost around 5 bucks lol And here's my final setup. I'm also going to install a z32 maf within the next few days when i get the time to do it. Thanks for looking!! +1 for all DIY'ers WE RULE!!! cont: 5-8-08 removing the stock elbow waiting for my megan elbow to arrive. used a 12mm socket and wrench to remove the nuts. there are 5 of them. elbow has been removed. used a 14mm socket to remove the 3 nuts holding the downpipe to the elbow. while i was at that i decided to remove my cat and put in a test pipe for now. went right in without any problems.

Looks good man
I can understand why you used the stock manifold but Why oh why did you use the stock Dump pipe?? that probably one of the most restrictive pieces of the exhaust system, you could have at least gone with a Megan, its only 130 bucks. plus with the less hassle of it being out already

yea, i know. Just didn't feel the need to use it. a couple of hp loss isn't going to kill me. probably later when i upgrade the manifold.

It's not a good idea to use Teflon tape on oil lines. Save it for your home plumbing.
Like said before you are going to loose a lot of HP with the stock outlet. It's not a couple. It's 15-20hp with the stock turbo.

you'd be surpirsed on the differance it would make especially on your turbo now
And for "spool up" time. that 3 in exhaust doesnt help as much when the gases are still being pushed through a 1 3/4 - 2in (cant remember size) pipe especially when that waste gate opens up

You beat me to it! I was just going to do some scolding for using Teflon on the oil lines. To the OP, the reason is that it could be possible to get a piece of the tape into the oil line while twisting it, and then if it clogs up your restrictor, your turbo takes a giant poop.

not too bad.....def. not the way i would of done things (the outlet...big mistake. that makes the biggest difference on any of the exhaust pieces) but....as long as you're happy.

Why does your valve cover look like it came off of a Blue Bird SR?

Just a simple correction.
You keep saying dump pipe, but a dump pipe is what comes off an external gate.... Usually it is called a turbo elbow, turbine outlet, etc.

haha, i'd have to get a wideband. not sure how that would go over. I've thought about it but I've heard too many people mess up their cars. It's still in the back of my mind tho i dont have much time for something like that. If i find a good deal out there on a Wideband i might just go for it

Nice writeup! You should have went the extra mile and upgraded the elbow though. The 2871r needs it! You'll see what I mean when you replace the elbow. Again, nice write up

Great write up! i just finished the same setup except I used the Megan Turbo elbow! HOLY F*CK is the oil return a pain! i tried to use the T25 oil return. Even with bending and heating, it still wouldn't line up the same. I tried to fab a new line and it turned out worse! Good DIY! I would love to see a section on the Tech about all DIY installs
