2 piece wheel question
I have some work e-wing meshes that are 2 pieces. I want to do some clean up work on them because they're really dirty. Can i take off the face without dismounting the tires?

Not sure if I'm right, but I think two piece wheels are made of the wheel barrel and the face welded to the barrel. So you would have to cut the welds which means yes, you would have to dismount the tires.

ROFL ^ if they are welded together they would be one piece.
if you take a 2 piece wheel apart the air comes out of the tire (for the most part)

please why do people post in threads if they have no firsthand experience two piece wheels can be made in various ways more common with older style wheels (which your mesh probably is) the 2 piece design will be such that the front and rear barrels are welded together and the face is bolted in. these are the kind of wheels where you can flip the face and make a goofy low offset wheel etc. so yeah it is possible that you could remove the face without having any problems with the tire. the other kind of 2 piece is where the face is welded to one of the barrels, and the other barrel unbolts. a lot of the newer works have the front lip and face welded together and the rear barrel unbolts. lastly, a lot of wheels are called 2 piece where a wheel face is press fit into a barrel of a dissimilar metal. for the OP, there is a good chance you can unbolt your wheel face and leave the tire on there and clean it out and put it back together, but dont blame me if your tire deflates cause i cant tell 100% without looking |

Mine have a flat lip (non-stepped) with TORX bolts around the edge. When i look into the wheel, there is an edge that goes around the barrel that the face mounts to.

I believe your Ewings can have the face removed with the tires still mounted by what you described. Even if it were three piece in that formation you should be able to remove the faces like my Work Meister S1 3Pc. But I would suggest posting a photograph of the face and pad of the wheel. This way we're not all jumpin' to conclusions. I've seen so many wheels I can't keep my names straight anymore. A pic will be worth a thousand words.
I've seen 2 piece wheels made in various ways as chmercer stated. 1. Complete Barrel, with flange along inner perimeter to bolt face to. = 2 pcs i.e. Volk GT Series wheels for the most part, or the Enkei RPF1-RC, etc... This type you can remove the face with the tire still mounted. Now there are exceptions. This is a basic guideline with some examples of wheels. 2. Complete Barrel with face welded to barrel, i.e. Meister S1 2 piece, AME's Can't remove face without exorbant amounts of money. 3. Weirdest one yet is on my Work Termist S1C's, meister look alike. lolz... This wheel has a spun outer barrel, but the inner barrel is from a cast mold that has the face as part of it. So basically the inner barrel and face are one piece, then the outer barrel gets bolted to that. Now this one you MUST remove the tire.

Here's the whole wheel: You can see how the face mounts the inner diameter lip This gap between theface and lip leads me to believe the face come off as a separate piece Back of the wheel

from experience.. 3 piece wheels.. in laymans terms or watever.. the "face" of the wheel is piece numero uno and can be removed seperately, as long as the tire is deflated completely.. once you screw the bolts back in, reinflate.. and the seal will be fine. the remaining 2 pieces are joined together with silicone, but the "face" is what holds the two together, using nuts bolts. 2 piece.. theres the "outer wheel" and the face, held in by bolts.. so yes.. you should be fine.. just deflate the tires, it'll make them lighter ;-) lmao. no.. but seriously.. the "face" should be attached to the rest of the wheel.. if yall want to see pictures of what 3 piece wheels look like assembled, and dissassembled lemme know... oh yea almost forgot.. for all yall 3 piece guys.. me included, with my 3 piece 17" starks and 3 piece 18" simmons *baller*.. everytime you dismount the tire, INSPECT THE SILICONE SEAL, and every so often.. RE SEAL THE WHEELS WITH FRESH SILICONE AND ROUTINELY CHECK TO MAKE CERTAIN ALL BOLTS ARE TORQUED TO FACTORY SPEC. this isnt always necassary.. but ive seen 3 piece wheels that have litteraly fallen apart due to poor upkeep.. go on the supra forums, you'll see what i mean :*( seems to happen every so often.. protect your wheels, protect your baller cars.. check yo shit!!!

I don't believe you will need to deflate the tires if you know in fact that this is a two piece wheel. Even if three piece you should be able to remove the face without taking off the tire. But removing that tire would be cheap so do it anyways.

I did two. They look very good. A friend and i stripped them down to silver metal and applied some wheel clear coat. I'm very impressed with the way they turned out and i'm gonna finish the other two on my next day off.

I have 3 piece starks.. stark ceased to exist late 90s, so you can imagine i had a fun time finding out the specs eventually i found out work made them, and a while later through email they told me the factory specs.. i would try to email both SSR and Hasemi Sport to find out the exact specs, just to be safe.. like ive said before, ive seen 3 piece wheels come apart before = not fun, so do it just to be on the safe side. i cant remember exactly what mine were torqued to, but i was able to remove, and tighten the factory stark nut and bolt with 2 3/8" ratchets.. so tq couldnt have been too high.. in comparison i have simmons 3 piece wheels which use less nuts and bolts.. tq would probably be much higher. hmm..

Bump this old thread.
I have the same wheels and have the bolts out but for the life of me cannot get the face to come off. I have alot of experiece with 3 piece wheels (BBS RS and RF) but these bolt together different. My last set of RF's I built with Kodiak shells and the lip was attached ON TOP of the face but these are the opposite. Please help James |

what chmercer said, or take a piece of wood and put it on the center and use a normal hammer to tap the wood to tap it out.
