I'm bored at work so I thought I'd do a small comparison.

Zimbabwe's inflation hit a record high 7,634.8% in comparison to the United States rate which was at 3.3% in 2006 and is currently 2.2% (US Retail Price).

So at the current rate it would take $1.03 in 2007 to equal $1.00 in 2006. So by comparison Zimbabwe's 1.00 in 2006 would take roughly $1,898.31. (saying that they used US currency) As of today's market 1 US dollar equals $252.00 Zimbabwe Dollars. So that would require $478,374.12 Zimbabwe dollars to buy a pack of gum. +/- some you get the idea.

I'm losing interest in the project, but you can imagine the implications if our government & the Fed Reserve mismanaged money the same way.

Robert Mugabe is a fucking idiot.
He may have been a pertinent revolutionary back in the day but as far as I can tell, hes turned into a senile old despot who has lost touch with reality and is no better than the colonial overlords he overthrew as a young man.

makes me feel bad for some 3rd world countries.
-well not the countries themselves; but the ones who are forced to live under such harsh conditions

Whats horrible about this situation is that Mugabe has special police going around enforcing government set prices on food and other basic commodities in an idiotic attempt to stop further inflation. So, if you're caught selling food anywhere above the government set prices, you can go to jail and have your goods and property confiscated.
The thing is, the government mandated prices are far below the real cost of of the products the retailers pay. As a result, this policy is further demolishing any semblance of functioning economy in Zimbabwe.

I think something like 2 million people have fled to South Africa since Mugabe started his programs. Something like 85% of the population is below the poverty line, in a country that in the past has produced the most food in the whole of africa and made good money exporting it worldwide.

Theres much more and much uglier things to the the situation than this, but I don't really care to think about how many people are suffering from the delusions of a truly crazy old man with too much power.
I only hope Mugabe will be removed from office soon.

Well, if the government doesn't finish off all those people with poverty or complete financial collapse, then AIDS will pick up the slack.
