help with tranny swap
ok guys rite now i have an 89 hatch auto
i bought another 89 hatch 5spd wat im trying to do is swap over the tranny. from wat my frends have told me. it s not a simple task to swap the tranny. i thot it would take a few days time (3 max) but they said it is difficult if u dont take the motor out too. they recommend that i pull the motor and the tranny out. wen i install it, they said it would b hard to install the tranny alone from the bottom. they say if i take out the motor it would be easier but the problem i have is rite now my car is my DD. if i do this swap, i wont have a car to go skewl/work. do u guys think if i take out the tranny alone, how long would it take and how difficult it would be. from wat i read here on zilvia, it should take 2 days max?

I would also like to know what the easiest way of swapping the tranny is (unbolting and dropping out, or taking the motor out with the tranny from the engine bay) because i'll be doing that sometime next spring due to a fucked up 2nd gear synchro. The difference (maybe) is I will have access to a shop lift and equipement, so i suppose dropping just the tranny would be the easiest thing to do.
Sorry, didn't intend to thread jack.

Realistically it's a full day job, but a person well inclined and knowledgeable can do it in about three hours, start to finish.
Judging by your shitty ass grammar and spelling skills you're looking at three weeks, at least. Maybe more. You might also try getting off your lazy ass and actually researching the question instead of hoping someone will spoon feed the answer to you. |

If you have proper tools, a lift, and some manpower it'd probably be easier to just unbolt the tranny. However, if you're looking at the doing most of the work by yourself, in your garage, it'd probably be easier to just take out the whole engine with the transmission still bolted on.
I did it, by myself, in about 3-4 hours. The advantage to taking out the motor and tranny together is that you have a lot more room to work with and you can check to see if there's anything else that needs to be fixed/cleaned. As long as you have the proper tools you should be fine. |

I mean, do you see where I'm coming from? It entirely depends on your level of experience and tools you have at hand. It all depends on the person. Some people can install an entire turbo setup in a day. It took me about a week and a half! |

I wrote the auto to 5 speed swap faq in the Archive and Faq section check it out. It tells you everything you need to do and parts for the swap.
If you have a lift then drop the auto tranny its easier that way. You do not need to pull your engine.

tranny swap
I've done this. I'm mechanically inclined, but a freind and I done this in a couple afternoons(after school and work.) time. You'll need a demel and patience... Probably a new clutch line because the fittings are brass and it is hard to break them out of the sockets sometimes without rounding them off. I think if you're patient you're capable. Just research it! Good luck and let us know how it turns out...
