EGR Valve Error codes can be a quick fix or a major pain in the ass. It all depends if your EGR Control Solenoid valve is working or not - it controls the suction to the EGR Valve. You can tell if it's working or not by revving the engine & if you're feeling suction from the EGR line when it's disconnected from the EGR Valve, then it's working fine.

If it is, then the vacuum from it should be able to open & close the EGR & BPT valve as it's supposed to. What usually clogs the EGR valve is carbon buildup. Spraying some Carburator cleaner into the EGR while it's on the car usually cleans out the carbon buildup unless it's real thick. If it's caked on there then you might have to remove the EGR valve & BPT valve & clean them out with a small pipe brush, (any hardware store or cigar shop should carry them...http://vegassmokes.com/pipeaccessori.../pipecare.htm).

Now if you're NOT getting any vacuum to the EGR or BPT valves, then chances are your EGR Control Solenoid valve is shot or one of the vacuum lines leading up to the EGR Control Solenoid valve is bad / cut / disconnected /and or melted. You'll have to get a Factory Service Manual & use the FSM to troubleshoot your problem. That's when it becomes a pain in the ass.

Removing the Control Solenoid valve from the car to test it is a bitch as it's hidden directly behind the valve cover right next to the firewall. The easiest way to get to it is to pully off the valve cover. You'll have to follow the test procedures in the FSM to see if the Control Soleniod valve is working or not. If it's not working, then you'll have to go to the stealership & buy a new one OR, you can spend time running around looking for a used WORKING one...but that's usually a pain in the ass cuz you'll need to know someone that has KA motors lying around.

I learned all this stuff from my buddy. He has a S13 who's EGR valve is not getting any vacuum. Turns out his EGR Control Solenoid valve is bad. He's looking for a used working one to put back on his car.

Anyhow, hope this helps...

Check the vacuum hose going to the EGR valve it tends to burn up because it is close to the EGR tube.

The EGR solenoid's default position is open. The computer closes the solenoid during idle, low coolant temperature, high coolant temperature, acceleration. if you want to test the solenoid, check to see if the egr stops working during idle as it should.
