Red face silveight ls1

ok so im thinkin of doin an ls1 swap and want to know if its worth it and how long it would take to do it. i willl have everything to bolt it right in from hinson supercars and they are goin to do the wire harness and send it back to me so i can bolt the motor in and have her running in a weekend. what i think y its worth it because the sr is 205 stock and then you pay 2k for the motor and then all the bolt ons like intercooler bov and so on and my limit for the swap is 9500 and i will not get that much power as an ls1 would just bolt straight in 3500 for the ls1 with 350 horse and 9500 i can buy everything for ls1 bolt in and a rolling shell and motor. so if any one has had an sr and now has an ls1 s13 please enlightin me if you like it or not.

never ask opionated questions

either you trust the people that are doing it, or you dont. Its your money.

If that was my budget on an engine, I'd do the work myself due to not trusting anyone.

have a nice day.

BTW... Only the Corvette LS1's were rated at 350hp... The f-bodies were 305hp... Oh and you guys (Americans) were allowed to have the GTO.. Which I think was 345hp.

So to the OP. Your LS1 may or may not be rated at 350hp.

I got a buddy who did all the work himself...when he added everything up, he was at about $7800. If you want another option for a mount kit for an LS swap, check out PXRacing.com like already stated and try to get ahold of Frank. Last time I've talked to him, he put down 305 whp 360 ft/lbs on a stock engine with intake and exhaust. Still using the stock headers iirc.

PS: Dont ever expect any swap to be done over a wk end, specially if you've never done it before. Always add in Murphy to fuck shit up for you the last minute.

if you want straight up bolt on no cutting/welding subframe - check out sikky.com. They have everything you need to bolt onto your car. However it is a bit more expensive. But also consider you do not need to get a gto oilpan, cut/weld subframe, DS included in sikky's kit, do not need to get motor mounts from a vette (like hinson), it is about the same price as the Hinson kit.

Daft also make a good kit too - with headers for a good price.

Check out silviav8.com if you have not already.

There are many options to do a ls1, just which everyone you feel comfortable with (wallet + time + DIY knowledge).

is it worth it? - only you can answer that AFTER you're done.

How long does it take? Depends. If you just want stock, bare minimum swap vs custom fabbed, it will vary as your wallet/skills/tools allow.

Running in a weekend - sure, maybe, as long as nothing unexpected comes up and you got all the parts ready. And depends on your definition of what running is.

If you can spend less than 7k(which would be hard) then it might be worth it. I did the swap before and probably spent 9k because i paid wayyy too much for the motor. In the end it wasnt worth it because the motor I got was bad and transmission was bad too. But even if it did work it wasn't worth the trouble. Just stick with an sr.

I have an S13. Up until 3 years ago I had a redtop SR. Then I swapped in a chevy small block genI. The reason I did not go with an LSseries is because the genI has much much more aftermarket support.

A lot of people who put down the genI don't know that you can get aftermarket blocks that are much better than what GM can offer in their LSseries or even LSX crate motor.

The chevy small block genI is probably the most popular engine ever used in production or racing application. There is HUGE aftermarket support for this swap.

The LSseries is getting popular but it's not there yet. The reason GM sponsors an LSX racing series is because given the choice, most racers would rather use an aftermarket block over the LSX. They limit all cars in this series to LSX to promote their engine.

Just some counterpoints to think about. You can find stock GM GenI block very very very cheap anywhere. LS1 costs slightly more, but lately they are getting very popular so I'm having trouble finding used LS1 for below $3000. I can buy new GenI blocks from GM for $1500 with warranty.

You will find very few people who have V8 swaps, and fewer still who have SR then gone V8. So your questions will be very difficult to answer.

In my personal experience, I set my car up for autocross and short roadcourse. I need low end response more than peak power. The GenI has better bottom end torque than the LS1. Plus it's cheaper and easier to tune the carb than trying to do a reflash. I can fine-tune the fuel curve on the fly in a few minutes intead of trying to reflash with an ECU.

You will run into a lot of things, like power steering, exhaust clearance, mounts, driveline alignment, etc. It goes on and on and on. Been there done that.

Good luck.

I've driven both a 413 whp SR powered S14, and a 400 fwhp LS2 powered S14. There is no comparison. To make 400 hp out of 1/3 the discplacement you're going to have to have a lag heavy turbo. The biggest problem with the SR was the gearing. Every time I upshifted I was out of the power band again. While waiting for boost I was literally getting passed by minivans. The LS2 pulls now. PM me your e-mail address and I'll forward you my budget for my entire LS7 S14 build. I recently have been thinking about putting the LS7 heads I have on the shelf for a year or two and just slapping in a 5.3 L motor just to get her on the road. You can pick up the LS based 5.3 300hp truck motors running and complete for under a grand at the junk yard all day.

243 casting heads on a 5.3 with LS2 intake and a cam

To me an LS1 is great but the iron block LSx (6.0-5.3-4.8) for the money and a few bolt on parts is a far better investment.
