What is the difference between vLSD and Quaife torque biasing differential and any other diferentials? Which is better or what is the different apps. for the differentials?
Also does anyone have one of those for their 240sx? (P.S. Sorry if the Quaife diff has been discussed before. I know about the vLSD but not about the Quaife) |

Interesting Side fact I just found out.
Quaife Diff from Quaifeamerica is $1,195 they make a 5-speed and 6-speed Gear Kit for the Silvia as well. I believe the SR and KA used the Same Trannies with different Bellhousings. So this gear kit should work in a 240sx. The only down-side is that it is a Dog-Type engagement gear kit, so SUCK for street use. Of course with a price tag of $7,895 for the 6-speed gear kit, I don't think any of us will need to worry about this. |

Ya I saw that gear kit. Way over my price range. They did have a diff for the 240 on their website. I don't remember the site address right now but it is on the links page of my website for anyone who wants it. Groupbuy has some diffs from them right now that is why I asked.
Thanks for the feedback! Don't know what we younguns would do with out this site. <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'> |

####, even if a Quaife unit is available and it costs a couple hundred installed more than a Kaaz, I'd choose the Quaife. Cuz with Kaaz, you'd have to change the differential oil almost as often as you do with your motor oil. Quaifes, I've heard, are maintenance free. @[email protected]

The diffs are different in the way they work. Our VLSDs work by having the two axles attached to parallel plates surrounded by fluid. As the two shafts spin at different speeds the fluid shears and starts to drag the other shaft, forcing the two to spin at a relatively similar speed. This means that there is a small lag in engagement. Also these are not user servicable in any way nor are they adjustable in anyway (unless of course you are a chmist and can formulate different fluids with different shear properties)
The KAAZ is a clutch unit which acts like a car clutch. It too has plates which are spring loaded. when differing shaft speeds are encountered the shafts lock when the plates interface. These are user adjustable and come in one way lockers, 1.5 and two way lockers. The down side is they can be quite noisey when turning at full lock and they require LOTS of service to keep them running. The Quaiffe is rightly known as the rolls royce of diffs but is VERY much more expensive than the other diffs. It is gear driven so you get no noise, no maintenance, and instantaneous engagement. It really isn't adjustable at all. Some people have stated that a high torque app can break the delicate gear mechanisms but Quaiffe has a great warantee. Anyway, it all depends on what you want to spend and what kind of quality you want. If cost is no issue go for the Quaiffe. If you are budget limited buy a used R200 VLSD and be done with it. It works fine for most purposes and isn't really finicky at all. HTH Rob |
