I use four different cans for this, primer, ground coat, color and sparkly clear.
I spent $100 on supplies and happy of the outcome. This is where i got the idea from How to: paint wheels, slam your fc, and fit wheels. - RX7Club.com Pics |

ok well here is my rattle can
i did my hatch lke 3 weeks ago ans still need to clear coat but im waiting till i get the motor in first. i used about 18 5oz cans of duplicolor import auto spray the color is Graphite Grey Metalic this paint an be picked up from any autozone or kragen (oreily) store since my bro works at kragen i got all my paint half off so in all i spent about 32$ on everything after all the paint was done i wet sanded with 2000 grit sandpaper and believe me, it got super smooth, almost fresh smooth. so here goes the pics i used the wrong base coat before doing the top coat so it came out kinda primer like, so i redid the base and top. sanding and prepping the hood. making it nice and smooth this picture is ugh, but this was before the hood got done and the bumper already painted getting the lights all done up to atleast make it barable to look at lol just a random pic before the hood and lights got done. i absolutly love this picture, just looks so beast to me. this is while i was prepping the hood to get painted. after i put the hood back on, needed a few more coats, but still looks good. after a few more coats on the hood and a flip of the lights. got the doors done and nice and clean, kinda looks like primer though in the light. Cant wait to get the clear coat on Got the QP panels done up and nice along with the trunk THE BIGGEST MISTAKE COULD HAVE EVER MADE WAS PAINTING AT NIGHT. DONT DO IT. THE PAINT WILL NOT DRY PROPERLY AND WILL SHIFT IF TOUCHED, LIKE O SAY TAKING OFF TAPE AND ACCEDENTLY TOUCHING IT. HERES THE OUT COME.\ this was a kinda easy fix though this is with the car completely done, right after the wet sanding to make it super smooth. |

I've saw a friend who rattle canned the "base" coat black and then sprayed this 2 part clear over it.
Spray Max Rapid Cut-in Spot Clearcoat aerosol It's supposed to be automotive grade 2 part. said the stuff was noxious as hell and you definitely need a respirator. I couldn't tell it was spray bombed. Looked nice.

Rustoleum & Krylon are typically enamel (which is the crap that Maaco uses). For best shine, get some acrylic lacquer. If applied right in many coats, it can even be buffed to a mirror shine. The best quality acrylic lacquer can be found in spray cans from places like paintscratch.com. I did find a few cans at Advanced, but the formula sucked. Paintscratch's spray was like show quality!

I did the front lip and mud guards on my G20 recently.
Prepped the lip and mud guards with 220 grit. Two coats of primer, then wet sanded with 400-800 grit. Laid down base and clear (2 coats each), then let the clear dry overnight. Wet sanded the following morning with 1000, 1500, 2000, and 2500. Buffed with Meguiars Ultimate Compound. Spent probably around $35 in materials ($5 each can, $10 for the compound, and the rest on sand paper). A shop would have probably charged me somewhere in the neighborhood of $250 for everything. Primer: Base coat: Clear coat: All done: Didn't take pictures of the mud guards, but here it is all finished: Materials used(all of the sand paper sheets weren't pictured): Got an extremely smooth and glossy finish. Not an 100% match with the OEM red, but it's close enough for me. Some of you guys are getting pretty shitty results with rattle cans. I'm usually the guy to tell you to paint it properly with a gun and compressor, but I really couldn't justify going through all that trouble for a lip and mudguards (aka something small/minor). Now, if I were repainting a front bumper or a bigger panel, I would have definitely gone with a gun/compressor. If he had bothered to clear, wet sand and buff it, it wouldn't be so noticeable. |

so i've been reading this thread for a long time....and since I wanted to try and paint my car myself...i tried something a little different....
car used to be blue.... crashed it into one of the guys at a drift event (he actually hit me) replaced the whole body with a "nismo" replica...this is rattle canned that metallic flakes blue that you see in autozone...it was the only one to remotely match..you can see the difference in the bumpers/sides. I then got lucky on some really fancy wheels, and decided to redo the whole car because of the wheels....and lets say...it was a job. I hung out here on this forum, and decided to not spray the car, but try the "ole" roller method. and for about 50 bucks...i painted my whole car outside my house...a panel at a time. as you can see...i wanted everything painted... so I sanded the whole car down...all the panels, took about 4-5 hours for a quick sand....after washing the car really well of course. I then put on the first coat...at this time it was really warm in socal, so the paint was a little wet when I put on another then coat. the following weekend, sanded the car again, and put the second layer on her....I have yet had time to sand the car, and put a final coat on... but I did have time to hit up the friday night lights at irwindale for a whole 4 runs, but someone was able to snap this shot. It's cheap, not a bad job...would I do it again...hell no, i'd pay someone 5 bills to paint my car for two weekends off....but for those that can't afford shit...this was cheap, and came out more than decent. and yes, don't touch wet paint. |

I did my bumper today and I don't think it came out bad. It just takes time. If you dont take time, it wont come out good. You absolutely have to wetsand and buff
bad pics I still have to say though, for the best DIY cheap-o result, go with the roller method. This is when my car had rustoleum paint. |

I wash my car regularly, wax it once a month, and claybar it once a month as well. Lip is still super glossy. If it ever dulls out, I can always wet sand it and add another coat of clear. Don't know about that. Still looks pretty bad. The only way to go about it with rattle cans is painting one panel at a time. That's the only way you'll be able to put down nice and even coats. Every rattle can job I've seen is always extremely spotty and has a lot of imperfections. |
