Widest rear tires on a s14 chassis
Anyone know the widest tires that'll fit on a s14 body (95-98) with minor cutting/bending of the wheel well? thanx in advance.

245 would be a really nasty looking setup. I think 225 would be about the largest you'd want to put on them. Even 215 would make a large bulge.

thanx for the replies. This wasn't suppose to be a physics question. Given the best conditions (coilovers, etc etc) that factor in suspension set ups. What's the widest size wheels that'll fit? thanx again in advance

it looks to me that 225-245 looks good for a 7.5-8 in wheel
255-275 for a 8.5 to in wheel and then go nuts after that

But now that I think about it, some people like the way tire buldge looks some people dont'. Mole: reread your post, there was no question stated. Don't take it to heart, I'm just not a fan of small wheels big tires. |

It isn't even about looks... 245 is just plain unsafe on a 16x6.5. 225 will work, though. I dunno what crack your friend the tire guy was smoking... I don't even think a 245 would clear the suspension with the stock high-offset wheels.

Since were kinda on the subject. Is it safe to stretch 225 any brand and model tire on a 9" wheel or is it safer to do it with a more expensive tire. I'm looking at the FM901 and the ES100 or would I have to pick something like S03's. Thanks.

Maximum wheel width for a 225/45-17 is 8.5" for pretty much any brand. A few competition tires in that size will fit on a 9" wide wheel, but street tires won't. Silly idea anyway, just get 235's or 245's.

Ok, thanks for the reply. I may be picking up a set of wheels 17x9 +18 so I guess I'll just play with the tire sizes and pull the fenders a little if needed.
I was just wondering if those tires would be able to take the loads on the sidewall if stretched. |

If anyone else has something usefull, please post proof with pics!
Here's the images that I've stollen from all over the place in my research. 315! What! My rears are 17x10.5 +27, I don't know if that's enogh offset to run the 315s. Most guys that go 275 or bigger run +30, I wish I knew what this guys offset was. I'm going to start at 285s since that's the biggest that the Kumho MX comes in, and if it'll take more with my +27, then I'll upgrade to 315 Kds. If anyone knows this guy, find out his rear wheel size and off-set please! 315/35/17 no fender roll: 285/30/18 on s14: This guy is running +0 in the back. Imagine what you could do with an extra 27mm+ or more of offset! 225/45/17x9 +0 stock s14 rolled w/ minus 3 camber Freakin Perfect! I just want a little more meat so I'm goin 245/40/17x9 +0 on my fronts PERFECT 235/40/17x9 +0 Here is why I will be running 17x9 +0 in front: S14 17x9 +20 front CLEARANCE: I personally know some autoXrs that fit 245s in the front of a s14 with no issues. But then again you'll never hear an autxr talk about "stretch". If grip is what you're really after, and you can't afford wider wheels, then the widest tire you can SAFELY fit will always give you faster lap times, even if it does cost you a little "feel". A skilled driver can compensate with the extra grip for the loss in feel. Last edited by SicBastard; 05-18-2006 at 02:52 PM.. |

theres actually absolutely nothing wrong with a 225/45/17 or 225/40/17 on a 17x9 its not even a huge stretch, 215 would be a big stretch. i was in the tire shop yesterday (i had 235/45/17 dunlop fm901 mounted, im thinking about rotating them to the front and mounting a set of 255/40/17 pilot sports i have on the rear) there was one tire company's brochure that even listed 9" in the recommended size range for a 225 width tire. they also said you can mount a 295 on a 9". pretty far off from kuhmo's recommendations, i guess they recognize that some people get creative with tire fitments?

Falkon do you know of a thread that has better info then I already have? This was the closest I could find? I'm kinda new to the forums, will I get more hits if I post somewhere else? It probably doesn't matter now anyway. I'm pretty set on my 17x10.5s +27 in the rear, and I already have some 17x9 for the front that were specially made to clear 13" cobra brakes. Once they're mounted I'll make my own measurements b4 I get serious with some 3-piece wheels.
There's a rediculous amount of engineering that goes into tires. I don't think "experimentation" beyond the recommended parameters is a good idea. Like with the broschure you mentioned though, engineers work in the engineering department, but it's the marketing dept. that makes broschures. |

With 17x10.5 +27 you arent gonna be able to put that big of a tire. That size is equivalent to a 9 +8. You arent gonna be able to run 315s without a pull and some camber. 285 is gonna be pushing it also. I run 10 +7 with about -3* camber with a 235/45/17 and theres hardly any room with just rolled fenders.
BTW keep in mind that a +27 offset on a 9 vs 10 is different. I use this as a reference: http://www.1010tires.com/WheelOffsetCalculator.asp
