my friend's 92 3/4 ton gmc truck has been pretty damn reliable. bought it with just a tad over 100k miles, and has put 50k really really hard miles on it.
Daily burn outs, lots of jumps, off roading, top speed limiter all the damn time, basically drives it like he stole it. The truck is completely stock. been really reliable, but has a small trans leak now. Oh yea, he maintains it very poorly as well. Bought it for $2400 or something 2 or 3 years ago.

Last year I was in a similar situation (wanting a truck to haul around my bike and tow the car occasionally), but with an emphasis on daily driving it (so fuel economy was key - I ended up buying a 2007 Tacoma 2wd 4cyl 5spd.
It doesn't tow shit (hauled my bike/etc around just fine though), brakes suck too badly to tow anything, looks like a 3yr old's matchbox truck (15" wheels with tiny lil tires), and only gets like 23mpg. I seriously contemplated throwin a log mani and a t28 on it, but I like warranties. V6 would have been fine - they actually do pretty well with a car/trailer behind em.

Yep, trucks are cheap as shit nowadays.
We have an old Chevy 3500 1-ton pickup. It's bulletproof and can haul any damn thing I want it to. I used it a couple of weekends ago to haul pavers. I had over two tons of pavers in the back of the truck on one trip. BOOYA. 7621 lbs total! |

My dad bought an 05 Yukon in early 07 for 24,000. The dealership down the street is selling an 06 Yukon Denali, same color, same mileage, for 18,000.
Honestly, you better act now before gas becomes any cheaper. I practically stole my truck back when gas was 4 bucks. |

Really? That's the main reason I was looking for the manual. This is why I'm even considering buying one. I have a fuel efficient DD, gas prices won't really affect me. |

note on diesels.
Most people think diesel engines are designed to run a million miles and never fail. They fail about just as much as normal trucks. That 02 duramax sounds like a great deal until you factor in that it will need injectors replaced around 200k miles. They're like $200 each new, $150 rebuilt per injector x8. The 12v cummins has about the cheapest parts around but it's the oldest and doesn't make much power. Any of the new electronic diesels will absolutely surprise you on price and don't bother with the dealer. It's like 2-3x that price there. I sold a guy with a 03 cummins common rail, a set of pistons and rings because he cracked a piston running one of those chips. It was $1334 for 8 pistons and rings and he thought it was a smoking deal because the dealer up there wanted $1650 for the same thing. Unique fact. Duramax's have right and left bank pistons. They arn't interchangeable.

He has at least 32" tires, maybe bigger, so that might have something to do with it, although I know 2 years ago he had the tranny rebuilt and last year he just had the whole thing replaced. He doesn't drive it much anymore though due to its 8 mpg.

If serious about getting a truck take a look at mine, we need it sold for our trip to Mexico on November. We used it to haul a 38 foot trailer, hauled it no problem. 2001 1500 Dodge Ram for 4,500 Heres some pictures.

we've hauled 19,000 pounds on our gooseneck behind the 2500 duramax, Railroad track LOL. I dont know why the hell we buy such heavy shit. Quote:
This is our second 02 Duramax, we never had any problems with injectors, but we have a couple friends replace them. They dont all go out at the same time also, its kinda a pain in the ass, but If you really use a truck for trucky purposes I would not go gas.

98 Grand Cherokee 5.9 Limited, I loooooooooooove mine, luxury, power, cheap as shit. All in one! And I'm sure it can tow a car no problem.
Mostly city driving gets me 12 mpg, when I put my foot down, real time mileage drops to 3.5-4 mpg. But so much fun! I love it. |
