Positive Results - Tomei M7960
One of the things I hated before buying this was the lack of good comments on this turbo, nobody was sharing. Let's fix that.
Install - Tomei easy. Meia Dyno - 97 S14 SR20DET - Tomei ARMS M7960 - YouTube 350HP/343TQ @ 19.8 Psi. Was going conservative, happy hitting 350, turbo still has a few more PSI in it if we get bored. Pulls like a freight train after 4. Relavant mods: S14 SR, built bottom, Tomei 740's, Z32 Maf, lightweight fly, Tomei Expreme manifold & elbow, etc etc. Last edited by BoostinIX; 08-02-2012 at 09:46 AM.. |

Funny that you say so, I did an install on a S13 SR with Expreme manifold, CP Piston 9:1, eagle rods, manley springs, and 256/264 HKS cams setup, power FC, etc... Install was fairly easy, the only difference in the install on a S13 is that you need to grind the engine mount bracket 1/4" to clear the turbo, as they are not the same as S14 bracket, or you can use one S14 bracket also. Anyway, we are going on the dyno sunday and I'll post the results here.
So far, my friend like the way the turbo spool, but the tune is VERY conservative for the breaking in of the engine. Anyway, as I said, I'll post the results here! Frank

Looks like fun! How do you like the response overall? Specially between shifts?
Im thinking of getting the M8270 for my Turbo KA with their Expreme manifold converted for KA. Thanks for any info! |

Shift drops it right into spool zone on mine, no real lag after shifting. Love how it handles. I'm on RE-01Rs, and spooling WOT in 2nd still breaks the tires loose, even just driving down the road lol. If anything, wish it spooled a hair sooner, but once it's on? It's on.

Happy to hear that your pleased with the M7960, will get the kit once the time is right. Buddy of mine who has a shop says that he's been installing alot of these, looks like they a popular choice.
Nice to see someone write a review, thanks. |

Great numbers! I'm more than pleased with my Tomei turbo as well. Great bang for the buck systems.

Nice numbers for sure...however what's the cost difference vs a typical 2871r setup?

Stock cams, green was an S14 non-BB T28, Grimmspeed ported/polished/ceramic coated, was only @ 11.5PSI. Sadly I didn't get it back to the dyno to see what the 14.5PSI we ran it normally was making. That little T28 with Grimmspeed work did awesome.
Old T28 run, 8 vs 11.5 PSI: Only power mods since then were the turbo, injectors, and tune. Cost - not sure. Never priced out the 2871R, but it is nice that Tomei includes everything you'll need, as they do with all their products. Lines are great quality too. Better HD M7960 video: Over the winter, I may send this one to Grimmspeed as well for their PnP/Coating. Should help spool a tad faster. Last edited by BoostinIX; 02-20-2013 at 06:02 AM.. |

so the only mod over your baseline was the manifold and turbo? not bad earning ~100 whp for just that!
Edit: i see you upped the boost a bit too... still... not bad |

6 months later.
Still loving this turbo. Given me 0 problems. Finally got to try it out for more than daily driving, on a private Sikky day and for both days of 100 Drifters of December. As a rookie, I will say it's certainly quite a bit different going from a PnP T28 with insta-response to a bigger setup with some lag to factor. That said, the turbo was awesome. Gave power exactly where you expected it to, lag was predictable and manageable. Looking forward to the new season to really make use of this. Anyone having a doubt, go do it. OR. Go get the big brother 8270. Thanks again Zerolift for the great setup. For those looking for video/audio of the turbo: Sikky day. Crummy footage, good for audio. Pay no attention to the light pole |

Just now caht this thread.
Boostin, I'm glad to see this review posted... Thank you! As you know, the only descriptive review before this I could find had mentioned a bunch of boost creep issues etc... More excited than ever to post up an M8270 review! Quote:
Does the Expreme manifold put the turbine in a slightly different place? reason I ask is I was able to mount the M8270 to my S13 SR with about 1/16" to spare between the compressor housing & motor mount bracket: A typical 2871 setup will probably be slightly more expensive to set up the same way. I got my my M8270 for $1100 shipped from FRSport. As stated, it comes with all the gaskets, turbo lines etc. To run it on S13, I had to buy a reclock kit & T28 outlet elbow, adding another $140 to the price tag. For a 2871 that costs about the same as the Tomeis, you would still at minimum have to buy gaskets & whatever else happens to be needed- so it's probably be a hair more expensive said & done; but negligibly so. However, with the 2871, you get a BB turbine whereas the M-series units utilize journal bearings. Also, with the 2871, you get Garrett's proven name. I personally stuck to the Tomei A- because it puts out the power I am looking for, and B- because let's face it- it's pretty

If everyone just used one brand we'd all have driven Fords since the first one came out
(...don't even start lol) It's like asking do I want red paint or blue paint. Going to get paint either way, both are covered under MFR warranty and support, both do nearly the same thing. And yes.....very pretty I haven't seen creep issues, just the typical spikes from driving my car in 20 degree weather :P lol. |

Have you tried getting any more power out of this turbo? A 610 cfm turbo should be able to make a good deal more than 350 hp. I would think you could get 450 out of a turbo that size? I'm looking to upgrade my S15 turbo soon and am looking to do something different than the GT2871 everyone does. This Tomei turbo with the Tomei expreme manifold really appeals to me.

When you say built head what exactly do you mean? Upgraded valves, cams, port work etc? I plan to use either the poncams or the JWT S3 cams that are VCT compatible with this the turbo. Looking for 400hp and a 51lb/per min turbo should have no problem getting there. Sure wish Forced Performance made turbos that were direct bolt on for the sr20 like they do for 4g63`s.

I think cams will get you close Tom. The S3's do not require springs to be upgraded, where as the Tomei cams will.

Tom N,
The Folks at Tomei made 400hp with 360(ish) torque with the M7960. The results were on an S15 w/SR22, Expreme manifold & Poncams- not sure of the injector size; but I'd wager at least 740's. On the very same setup, they made 450hp w/420(ish) torque with the M8270. I will have numbers to post with the M8270 soon. Would have had them already if I hadn't shattered a tranny at the drag strip lmao. I'm not a big fan of porting etc SR heads... Unless the machinist REALLY knows what they are doing; there is a chance of shoving a lifter thru the port. I run std 86.5mm bore, OEM head gasket with ARP studs, regular 48mm tubular manifold/outlet and Tomei 260* cams w/solid lifters... should give you an idea of what to expect. Tune will be at 1.5-1.6bar.

Look forward to your results with the M8270. I will be looking to replace my stock turbo with in the next month and would love to see what you do with this bigger one and how boost response is with it.

My old car, stock stroke, 20 over 9:1 CP's w/ Carrillo H-beams, full HKS Valvetrain w/ 264 step 2 cams, fuel system with 740cc Injectors, Tomei M8270 on stock unmodified manifold.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rIsJv47_-Cc Had a massive exhaust leak on the manifold to turbo so wouldn't hold 24psi consistently. Never got to re dyno before selling with my meth injection and ID1000's. This was after hitting the semi local 1/8 mile track and doing well over 20 passes then driving 40 minutes home. The only cool down period was how long it took me to open shop and strap it down. 426/359 was my first pull but noticed my boost falling off to about 18psi on the top end. Regards, Robert

Robert, just for more information to add to this thread; What was full boost reached at? I'm assuming this was an S13 motor and not the VTC S14/15 motors, correct?

I was told by other members I could have run 24psi on pump but I did it on C16.
No the RPM scale is accurate, I only ever revved it to 7 grand. Regards, Robert
