RB25det adjustable cam gears??

So what ive come to understand, you can just take another stock exhaust cam form the rb25, use it on the intake side of the head to accommodate for adj. cam gears?

I have it all together on the engine now but im not sure what caps to use???
the exhaust caps or the intake caps...

I don't know if this has been cover but i haven't found anything real direct.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Unless anything has changed in the last few years you used to be able to use any RB series cam gear set, both intake and exhaust. The only thing is you lose the variable stuff because you have to buy a non NVCS cam set, which all the aftermarket cams are for the most part. Its kinda pointless to do adjustable timing gears without better cams.

Or track this down.

For stock cams you use the stock caps, for aftermarket cams you use whatever they specify. If you are trying to use an exhaust cam in the intake side and running into issues you should just go back to the stock intake cam until you get a aftermarket set. I have yet to see someone do a cam swap like you are trying on the RB25, if you want to continue down that path you may very well be the first to do so.

Soo I just realized you were talking about the caps for the bearings, IDK why but I was thinking you were talking about the lifter caps. Use the caps that go on that head in the exact order you pulled them off. You should not be swapping them around randomly. I would swap back in all the intake stuff and make sure it spins freely, than if it does swap in just the exhaust cam and leave the caps where they should go based on where you pulled them off and tighten per the FSM.

So I put all the original hardware back on and the cam still won't spin. I'm gonna talk to a shop here in town sometime this week and see if I'm fucked or not.

Did you put the engine in TDC before you took anything off? And when you put everything back on, did you line the cams up close to where the timing marks are supposed to be? If you didnt, shit could be off and valves are sitting on your pistons.

I have a FSM for the engine it was all don't to spec. The only reason I can think its stuck is because they don't have bearings in the caps. The cap serves as the bearing so I think somehow they got warped and now it all needs to be fitted again.... but I'm not sure

Did you torque them down per FSM sequence? Double checked to make sure the tranny isnt in gear?

Yes it was all done to FSM spec. The timing belt isn't on it yet....
What would the tranny have to so with it?

I assumed you had everything back on and you were trying to turn the engine via the crank to check for binding. That would be the only way I would check to see if the cams are stuck or not. Would hate to spin one cam and have the valve tap the bottom end.

You can turn the cams with a wench via the hex on #1 cyl. And all you need to check is if it is free...2-3 degrees at most .... it won't move at all... yet the exhaust side moves very easily with the wench... (2° at most ) and there both torqued the same....

To answer your question, there are 3 ways to go about adjusting the intake cam gear:

1) Degree the intake cam to see how much it needs to be adjusted. Remove the cam gear and you'll see on the back side of it 3 bolts that can be loosened and the gear can rotate independent from the VCT part. There are no markings you're basically guessing at your adjustment.

2) You can eliminate the VCT by blocking off the oil feed on the front of the block and run a standard adjustable cam gear.

3) Greddy makes an adjustable cam gear ring that goes over the top of the VCT part on the intake cam. I can't find it on the internet right now but I know it exists. I degreed my intake cam and found it to be dead on so I didn't need to buy an adjustable gear.

AND DO NOT DO ANYTHING WITH YOUR CAMS WHILE YOUR PISTONS ARE AT TDC! Always back the pistons down into the bores a few degrees, install the cams, line them up with the rear timing cover, THEN rotate the pistons up to TDC. The FSM procedure is risky because it assumes the cams go on at exactly a 15* angle or whatever. Screw that. They never lay just right when you initially set them in the caps.
