Do VLSD lock if one rear wheel is in the air?
As the title states, does the VLSD still lock if one rear wheel is in the air? I searched some threads, it doesn't seem like definite answers.
The reason why i ask is in certain driveways, my car will 3 wheel and i am basically stuck. I was hoping geting a VLSD would solve my problem so i don't have to rush/force my way into a driveway in hopes of not getting stuck. Will the VLSD work if one wheel is in the air? i know helical types like the s15 lsd will act like a open if one wheel is in the air, if that is the case, getting a VLSd won't solve my 3 wheeling problems ![]() |

For that kind of 3 wheel, you can trick a helical to lock by applying the parking brake (ont fully of course). This creates enough torque to have a bit of lock.

Yes the point of generally any LSD is to allow the wheels to spin at different speeds but not by a large degree. If one starts spinning the other should catch up soon.
Where as an open diff just applies power to any wheel with no traction. |
