Cross breed Nisyota
Ive been playing with Nissan engines in my personal cars for 10 or so years now, sr20's, vg30's and rb25's. All have been good to me and fun to drive. My favorite is the vg30detts torque and the rb25 neo with its snappy high revs. After the premature failure of my latest compound turbo Neo, I decided it was time for a change.
The 1jz vvti. I chose this engine for a few reasons. I like the ease of working on inline engines and the smooth revs that come out of them. I also like the exhaust is on the passenger side. It has solid cam over bucket valve train for reliability at high revs. It also has variable intake cam phasing for increase in low end torque. The Rb had cam phasing and it made a noticeable difference, but it only had 2 stages, on or off. The vvti is continuously variable to get the maximum torque out of the engine. This engine also has factory metal head gasket, unlike organic material on Rb. No weak 2 flank oil drive on the Jz like the Rb. So I tore it down and cleaned everything off. I ordered a full factory gasket set and changed everything except head gasket. I also ordered new water pump, timing tensioner, timing idler, timing belt, thermostat, and some coil pack connectors. I also had the alternator rebuilt. Step decked the flywheel and installed Arp bolts. Spec stage 3 clutch kit Also deleted some water lines and installed black An lines. Picked up some goodies from Driftmotion. Full Marlin Crawler R154 build kit and had the turbo rebuilt with 360 degree bearing and steel exhaust wheel. And tossed her in the car. New Griffin aluminum radiator. Made a swirl pot. Rear An line Drive shaft shop Aluminum shaft to mate the R154 to the Gtr diff. Instead of buying a oil adapter fitting, I just cut down the stock bolt and turned it into this. So I could run this Cooked up some flanges at my work to make a custom divided down pipe. Stainless downpipe started Back purged and well penetrated. More to come later.

Thanks for the props on the welding guys!
Last night I was at the shop changing belts on my truck. I planned to stay after and finish the down pipe. Here in arizona we get crazy dust storms and one happened last night. The dust was blowing in tje bay doors really bad so i finished the truck up and decided to leave. As I backed out of the drive way a lightning bolt struck and blew the transformer! It was super bright and made a loud buzz as a stream of raw power shot out of the transformer. Then the whole street went black and fell silent. I was like wtf?! Next i see a dancing orange glow on the side of the building next to ours. I drive around the corner to the dry grass field behind us and theres a brush fire. So I call the fire depot and they show up and put it out. Nothing too crazy but could have spread to the whole field.

I picked up a new Innovate wide band. Pretty sweet feature that you can calibrate it.
Also picked up a gently used Tial 50mm bov. And I was able to finish welding the downpipe tonight. Stock vs my divided setup. Id like to dyno test the gains (if any) back to back with no other mods changing.

I just measured between frame rails and hight. I dont remember off hand the size, approx 26 x 16 i believe. I just welded 2 pegs on the bottom and some threaded bungs on top, then made tabs to my tube core support. Ill try to take pix tomorrow.

I can weld, I just never get those beautiful looking welds on thin material. I can replicate them on heavy gauge SS though. Perhaps my heat settings are wrong...

I do move quickly on the thin stuff, but that's because I'm on the verge of blowing through it. Next time I'll back down on the heat and see if that helps a bit. Thanks for the tips, I'm not going to clutter your build with welding 101. Everything looks rad.

Thanks for the positive comments guys!
Heres a pic of the radiator upper mount I said Id take a few days ago for cured13. Piping has been polished. Also need to get black couplers, only blue were avail at fab time. Made some ducting to route air to radiator and Ic. And here is how she sits now. Engine is fully operational and started on the first try. Idled like nothing ever happened. Still have to make an exhaust and probably some more ducting.

Sad to hear that your compound setup took a dump. Any plans to run a compound setup on this thing?
Looks rad btw, builds like yours make me wish I just went 2J. If the trans ever lets go on you Bill's Auto Fab makes bellhousings to adapt the T56 to the 2JZ.

Me too! Im dying to put this thing on but i still need to buy the gates, injectors and pumps. Remodeling the house isnt helping either. So for now Ill just play with stock turbo i suppose.

Thanks for great pictures and keep them coming, I'm glad I can learn from someone with "know how" as yours.
Now, this is another smart thing that I plan to incorporate in my project: mine is from Volvo and also have thermostat build in. Great OEM quality and makes oil filter access easier on sr20. Are there any drawbacks of going this way? |
