Which clutch to use...

Hey guys, I'm gonna be swapping an sr20det into my '93 240 soon and was wondering what you guys thought I should do for a clutch. I figured I might as well do the clutch too while everything is out of the car and easier to work with/get at. The car will be street driven, most likely on stock sr20det for this summer, but by next Spring at the latest I want to upgrade the turbo and put down some real power :Ownedd: . So I was wondering what you guys use and how you like it, how it held up to your power and how it drives on the street. As of right now I was leaning towards ACT or Exedy. Also, whats a good site to get them for a good price?

just save money and use your stock clutch that comes with the motor, sometimes its already aftermarket. i been using the stock sr clutch for a while w/o slippeage, use that time to find a good price on a clutch... exedy stage 2 is good, or a spec stage 3.. most people hate spec though.. ACT is ok too but i would never use ACT again.

why wouldnt you use ACT? How much power do you have? Are you running slicks at the track and what do you run?

use exedy stage one(stage 2 is more aggressive). better than stock, will hold up to 280, last a while.
spec is good but a lil more $$.

i was looking to push more than 280 come spring and dont wanna kill my somewhat new clutch and have to buy a new one.

i'm also debating leaving the stock clutch, but i figured it'd be easier while the motor and tranny is out of the car already

Whats wrong with ACT? I've been running it for over a year and a half now and it seems fine to me...wasn't ACT the one that Ivan, with the ridiculous KA-T was running and he didn't have noticeable slipping problems until like 503 wheel hp, when ACT only rates it to 400 at the flywheel? I could be wrong...

i use ACT it's fine but expensive for what you're getting. GO with a stage 2 clutch. it will do fine. ANy brand name is fine

I think I may keep it stock for now until I do some more shit to it like turbo upgrading and whatnot.

If the clutch still has material left, keep it. Otherwise, get a Spec Stage 2. The one I have feels just like a stock clutch, but holds better.

Check this out: a 217 rwhp WRX beats one with 331 rwhp. 13.6 vs 13.8 sec in 1/4 mile.

Although the SPI WRX has more HP because of a larger turbo, it's slow to build up boost. The quick fix is to slip the clutch, but the SPI had a clutch that would not slip, so at boost all the power is wasted by burning out the tires.

Boo this man!! lol. Drag racing isn't gay. I hate how people rag on forms of racing that they don't do. Drifting, Auto-X, Road Course, and Drag are all fun and each car needs to be built differently for each. None are gay really, they're all pretty cool. And no it is not a poor way to make decisions about a car.

I'm looking for a new clutch too..I'm around 300hp now and the stock one isn't the best at the moment.. What u suggest? I use it daily and for drifting.. so I don't want a hard pedal or a jumping clutch.. stage 2 normally use puck clutch and I'm afraid about unstreetable..

I am looking at pushing around 250-265 at the crank and I have the Exedy Stage 1 sitting in my room. I have been told that this clutch is good enough to handle what I am looking at doing, since my car is being built for response and not total power. I would say for bigger power peeps(300+) Spec made a nice combo with carbon disc, pressure plate, and flywheel for around 650-700. Might want to look at that.

Horsepower has nothing to do with clutch holding ability.
It's torque.
Act's are underrated and run on cars making well over ACT's max torque rating.
I can't believe nobody's chimed in about RPS clutches yet... hint hint
Or the white bunny special. Bigger surface area, higher torque rating, smooth ass pedal feel.

with hp comes tq. i was also lookin into JGY customs clutches. those look pretty decent, any reviews on those from users?

back in 2000~2001 some guy in PA had a Z32TT pushing 550hp or so (the numbers are fuzzy in my head) at the wheels on that profile clutch
superior clutch has the dyno sheet somewhere down at his shop
a VG30DETT uses a 250mm clutch (i think) a little bigger than a KA or SR

on a AE86 200mm flywheel some local guys just cranked out 260 hp 230 tq at the wheels with no problem
my guess is that the 200mm setup can do aprox 350 to the wheels
so a 225mm in a KA should do 450+
and a 240mm is a SR20 should do 550+
but we will never know unless some one breaks one of these guys (which has not happened to date)
and backs up thier hp/tq numbers on a dyno

i have the spec stage three and im VERY happy with it. i also have a couple friends with them and we've all had good luck with our clutches. its a 6 puck sprung clutch, but it still daily drives soemwhat. i love it though. definetely recommend it

SPEC sucks ass. im using the stage 2 on my ca18det and its horrible, super soft pedal feel, worse than a slipping worn stock OEm clutch. does not resist fade too well. a few clutch kicks and drift nights and i already felt a huge difference. my main point, go anywhere besides to SPEC, unles you want to be swapping out clutches under a year

nitekids had the stock S14 SR clutch in his car until he did the cam install, turbo, and valvetrain upgrade. and those who kno, can vouch that when someone other then henry driving it, got on it hard. that clutch came out with material still on it. and that was while it was making in excess of 250+ whp

Get the Jim Wolf Z33 clutch kit... sprung disc and pressure plate...capable of holding 1200kg of force (whereas normal 'stage 2' hold in the 800/900 range)...

Best part of the JWT is the lighter than a feather clutch...almost feals as if no clutch is even there!!

I am going to be using the Exedy Stage 1 clutch for my car when I do the swap. it was cheap, made by a reputable company, and build to handle around 285-300 Ft.-Lbs of torque. I am figuring that i will be around 235-240 WHP, which will be about right for this clutch.

I think I'm going to use the Exedy Stage 2.

I'll be around the same rwhp for now, but come spring when the car is upgraded I want the clutch to be able to take more power so I don't have to go out and spend another $300+.

That may be a better fit for you. I've heard for anything more than a mildly modded SR, you need a little more clamping power than even a stage 1. I suggest the stage 1 however, for those looking to have a little more clamp without the harshness of a stage 2 or above clutch engagement.
