KA24DE knocking/blown?

Hi everyone, my ka started making loud ticking sound, coming from the head. Is the motor done? I figured not enough oil getting to the head for some reason, although the oil level was fine and the oil warning light wasn?t on. I?ll take the valve cover off today/tomorrow, what should I look for in particular? I?ve searched for the issue and a few people said that after those symptoms they blew their engines.

Sounds like you broke a guide for the chain. Pop off the valve cover and look where the chain is you?ll prob find a broken piece.

You should also dump your oil and inspect for metal particles in the oil. Try not to turn it on until you inspect everything. If you don?t find any broken pieces or loose parts under the valve cover another culprit might be your oil pump going out, not bringing oil to the head and chain tensioners not doing what they r supposed to be doing

Is there a way to check an oil pump? Don?t have a spare one. Your post has me hoping I might not have blown the motor yet. The sound doesn?t go away with the higher rpms btw and doesn?t go away when I unplug the cylinders one by one.

Not blown yet, keep t/s the way you are and it will blow . Check the things I told you, if you don?t find anything, remove oil pan and inspect bearings.

Second this. The upper chain guides on the KA24DEs are so notorious for this, Nissan released a technical bulletin (NTB98-055A) to remove them.

They aren't necessary and cause more harm than good. In addition to what's been said, I'd just remove them once you've got the valve cover off, regardless.

There are 2 of them for the upper timing chain, one on top one on the side.
Per TSB I don't even install them when I do rebuilds.

Yes, there is a way to actually test the oil pressure. In the FSM (Factory Service Manual) *EDIT* Forgot to add, the fitting size for the Oil Pressure Switch is male 1/8 BSPT so you'll need an oil pressure gauge with a male fitting in that size/thread, or adapt to it.

Thank you, man! I do have a service manual, used it for all my electrical work on the 240, awesome thing to have by your side. I?m not that familiar with working on internals, so your info is much appreciated.

Alright so update on this thread. I?ve taken the valve cover off and the top guide was indeed broken. I didn?t have a sealer on me and decided not to take the front cover off as well since I?ve thought that was it. Started the engine, but the sound remained, so it looks like the bottom one is broken as well. I?ll get to it tomorrow. Is there a reason why they would both go out at the same time? Seems suspicious

Alright so update on this thread. I?ve taken the valve cover off and the top guide was indeed broken. I didn?t have a sealer on me and decided not to take the front cover off as well since I?ve thought that was it. Started the engine, but the sound remained, so it looks like the bottom one is broken as well. I?ll get to it tomorrow. Is there a reason why they would both go out at the same time? Seems suspicious

When you pulled out the broken piece, did it come out complete ? Or is there a piece/ pieces missing ?

The guide was broken in two pieces, I pulled out both. Doesn?t look like anything is stuck in the chain so far. I?ll report when I check the oil pressure/drain the oil. The valves and everything under the cover looks really clean, almost new
