I bought a 95 240sx .that came in boxes of parts ,i have about got it assembled stock ka24de with a turbo im told has a spring for 11 or 22 lbs upgraded mass airflow and 550 cc injectors, i have never built a turbo car.what would be my best option for turning, i know i can only do so much with stock internals i just want as much as i can get out of this ka24de to play with will i build another engine for it thanks in advance.

Figure out that spring, probably going to need to get a lighter one.

Then you could use a fmu for light boost up to 7-8 psi or run a mega squirt pnp for a little higher but stock internals won’t be able to go much past 13psi depending on the turbo size.

4x 550cc injectors are good to around 350rwhp iirc
depends on fuel pressure o/c


I would not take factory KA24DE much if at all over 6,000rpm and in fact suggest you limit to 5800rpm for safety, as this is the engine's primary weakness.

Everything the KA24 lacks, the 'square' 86x86 sr20det/4g63/2jzgte type engines make up for so I suggest you long term plan to upgrade to an proper turbo engine if possible


As for how much boost is typically run on stock KA24 engines: 7 to 12psi (roughly 280-320rwhp I guess is fine) It depends on the condition of the engine, and as usual things like compression ratio and treatment. With methanol injection it could see 350rwhp or even 380rwhp reliably I believe but have never tried.
With E85 perhaps even more is possible (I wouldn't be surprised at 420rwhp) perfectly safe as long as it's made with boost (cylinder pressure) and not RPM.

Most stock KA engines on gasoline fuels (93 octane) should use turbos that flow around 40lb/min max To keep wheel weight down (fastest spool). I mention because the turbo in picture looks far too large to be useful. maybe Im wrong though, sometimes big turbos surprise me.

Tuning wise, get the cheapest computer possible (try to spend under $500) mainly because
KA specific stuff is hard to re-sell

The ideal computer is Power FC which uses a maf sensor so you can keep it simple. But I don't think they even make a PFC for the KA engine??

The best ecu would be AEM or Haltech (obviously?) but nobody sane would spend that kind of money on a stock KA engine.

Do you think the ka is worth putting that kind of money in,any advice is appreciated

No I think its absolutely crazy

The engine is a great turbo motor- when it is basically all factory. Add a camshaft upgrade and some springs for boost, and that is all I would ever do for or to a KA24DE. Keep it around 350rwhp for street cars is fine if you know what you are doing with a fragile engine. Otherwise, get something more robust.

The sr20 isn't just superior in terms of production capability. It's also got very popular tuning solutions, which are easy to re-sell. And the OEM parts are already intended for turbocharging.
It only handles slightly more max power with factory internals (around 400 max for the sr is typical if you want a reliable daily) but the sr20 is a far more stable platform, reliable, repeatable, more performance oriented, it seems more well balanced, higher rpm capability, it seems more harmonious etc...

To each his own. Depends on what you want from it/what your end goals for the car are and intended use.

I don't think it's crazy to build a KA if that's what you want in the end.

I like torque and responsiveness. The KA does not possess as balanced a rotating assy. as the SR let alone RB platform for that matter but i dont see a plausible argument for needing to rev to 8k RPM on a street car that is going to see the occasional NASA/SCCA track day when I can find my powerband starting at 2k. And I have always liked the KA engine.

You said in your original post you just want as much as you can get out of the KA while you build another engine. Yeah I think its crazy to build a motor you already plan to replace with parts that you can't resell for pennies on the dollar once they hit your doorstep. But for that reason. Not because the KA is an inferior engine. Figure out what platform you want and do it right the first time. There are so many choices of powerplant for this chassis, each with their own set of pros and cons. That's one of the greatest assets. Exercise patience and do your homework now. Your wallet will thank you in the long run.
