Interesting, I figured the zr drivetrain would be something people in the states would want to buy.

Unfortunately not many people would want an rb20 in unknown condition especially with an automatic transmission. I might have been able to sell it but unlikely for even what it cost to ship the engine here anyway.

Back in the early 2000s i always thought doing a 200ZR swap in a Z31 would be be awesome, only to find out it was kind of gutless from the factory.
What camera / len(s) have you been using? all the pics you have posted have been great.

Yes, in stock form, the RB20 isn't that exciting. But they can be modified to be quite impressive.
Thanks! Canon 6D mostly with a 50mm 1.4.
Btw, my turbo self destructed a week ago. Total destruction. The bad news is that I need to focus on the Z31 so the R30 will be down for a bit. The good news is that the turbo was a really old Garrett and I still made 283/316 while it was on the way out so with a new turbo, I should spool faster and make more power. Looking at a Borg EFR most likely.
I also found all the cast iron pieces and puzzled it back together. Looks like none of it fell into the oil drain line/pan but I will spray some carb cleaner down the drain line and drain the oil then do a change and drain that too before I start the car again. I found the broken shaft with the nut still atttached in the air filter and no metal in the intercooler.

Now thats alot of damage! Lol
Any suspect on what caused it?
RVAE34
06-16-2020, 08:00 AM
No idea what could have caused that level of damage. Obviously the bearings and seals went out but to have the center cast section explode is crazy. I guess lack of oil flow to the turbo itself when the seal gave out. I was experiencing some smoke at WOT before it happened but the last time I drove the car, I was getting on it while hitting an exit ramp, heard a loud bang and then smoke just poured out of the exhaust like 007. As soon as I slowed down, it poured out of the intake too so I knew the seals were gone.

Got the wiper motor cover and fasteners back from plating. Going to look so good in the bay. I may start restoring R32 GT-R wiper motors to sell. Last photo is before the restoration. The body was vapor blasted, the backing plate and motor cylinder were powdercoated and the cover/all hardware was yellow cad plated like it was when new. I also cleaned up the plug and wires and will start the reassembly today.

The guy who does my vapor blasting sends stuff out to be plated. Remade in the USA is his company. He does GT-R parts restoration.

Thank you!
Turbo arrived for the R30 and the manifold is almost done with the patches from removing the wastegate feeds. The Borg WG canister needs to be moved over about 1/8-1/4" as it's hitting my valve cover but my machinist is going to widen the slots on a mill so that should be done soon. I hope to have the car back on the road within 2 weeks.
My ZR parts are in the US from Japan so once I get the crossmember powdercoated, the engine can finally go in the car! I now have an extra set of all the OEM parts needed to swap an RB into a Z31 too so will get those coated and list on eBay.

You will enjoy the BW EFR. Does suck that it needs a bit of finessing to fit just right but I am sure it will look perfect once it's done. R30 will scream, but not as much as that NA RB26!!!!!

It's a 6758.
It's been a busy 24 hours. R30 is almost buttoned up and the RB is finally in the Z31! My buddy modified the OEM trans bracket to work and the shifter on the R34 transmission lines up dead center in the Z31 hole! We did run into an issue where the Z31 3 row radiator I bought will not fit so wil have to go full custom from the company that will be making the header and exhaust.

just don't know why the z31 is cheap value compare to 240z , the car is good looking and the body is solid compare to the old z almost of them the frame is to rusty even sandblast is not look more solid compare to Z31 .I hope one day the value keep going up.

I just don't think most people liked them for the longest time. I must admit that it was my most hated Z along with the 280's forever. Until one day the Z31 just really started to grown on me and now I love them. Funny that my most ambitious and extensive project ever is using a car I absoluty despised for the longest time. I think more people are appreciating them as time goes by as well. Aging like a fine wine.

I really like your z31 photoshop with the rear bumper flush to the rear light , this make the z31 look like the 240Z if I keeping this car I might do it flush look.
i have a family in VA, Reston and sterling area maybe one day drive to there and meet you in NISSAN meet

All wrapped up with the external WG feed removal, Borg Warner EFR 6758 install, flex pipe added to down pipe, new stainless braided AN line for oil drain, braided AN line to replace the breather tube that was a hard line, car is aligned now for the first time, front air dam back on and tightened up to the body and now just need to be tuned next week. It made 283/316 at the tire with a failing and tired turbo on a subpar tune so will be interesting to see what it makes now.

yeah, im not a big fan of screamer pipes either. I had to recirculate my tial on my rb25 s14 after a few days of use. Loud exhaust too, on any car, fucking obnoxious. Bov's on the other hand. They hold a special place in this ricer heart of mine. Either way, sick cars. Can't wait for more updates on the z.
What kind of battery is that on the skyline? Miata?

That Bypass valve is only barely quieter than a TiaL open vent
Don;t listen to feito lol. At 15 PSI, on my ultra quiet exhaust, my 7163 used to make people jump via the Integrated bypass valve lol

I guess you could be right. I never ran a turbo with an integrated bpv, I just assumed 'cause of its design: being so far from the filter, a very short cycle, odd shape ports. I have heard a lot of new fords with semi-loud bov's, or at least what I assumed they were. Maybe they're just oem bpv's.
I actually have a little td04 with an integrated bpv that Ive been planning on running on my Mazda. Maybe now I'll give that oem bvp a try before going aftermarket:boink:
Anyway, more on that z please!

They spent 8 hours tuning that dinosaur of an ECU and we ran into several issues. First of all, the ECU was too old to be tuned via laptop so it had to be done with the handheld which took forever. It would benefit from another day at the tuner or to swap over to a Haltech etc. But then we would have to start over anyway. The timing shown on the Power FC did not match the engine when using a timing light so the theory is that the mated SR20 CAS/FJ20 distributor gear might be a tooth off. We were worried that by trying to remove it to check/reposition, we might have made the issue worse so he tried to compensate. When adding timing, the HP and torque picked up nicely. Then he backed off some fuel as it was so rich. We also had an issue with boost creep and thought it was the vacuum lines and/or the controller but then we found that the WG bracket although seemingly thick enough SS, was flexing a little so it's likely causing the boost issue. At max setting on the controller, we still couldn't get above 17 lbs so hopefully when the new/correct bracket shows up from Full Race, that issue will be fixed. I also did not try increasing the gain on the controller yet but might play with that a little.
In the end, the car makes power quicker and holds it longer. It also feels much faster. With 304-307hp at 17 lbs, it's very quick so I am anxious to see what it feels like at 20 lbs since there was no issues with AFR's or knocking. The engine is very stout.
While I was at Driver Motorsports, I test drove a wicked singe turbo R32 GT-R which I am in love with and photographed this spectacular Pandem wide body S13 silvia. I really dig the color combo/graphics even though that type of design is normally not my thing. I love purple, teal and white so it was perfect in my eyes.
We also went over to their machinist who builds all of their RB's as well as a lot of American drag cars. He looked over the photos of the work done to my N/A RB and was impressed stating that my machinish did an amazing job and that it should rip for being an N/A engine. That made me feel good because several RB guys who only build turbo motors have criticized the work to the combustion chambers. This guy told me I will get the most power with the least amount of fuel efficiency which is what I wanted to hear :rofl.

Eh, I am ready to move on to the next one. Either an R32 or an E63 AMG wagon.
Going to work on the Z31 today. Got the S13 slim brake booster powdercoated along with the new upper coilover hardware I ordered. The old stuff got corroded when I cleaned the engine bay before paint and the green upper plates didn't look right with the car color so had them done satin gunmetal. Also had all the hood latch hardware and radiatior connecting pipe plated. Soon it will go up to MD for full Titanium octopus header and exhaust.

Got a bunch of work done today. Intake manifold is fully torqued on the head with gasket. N/A throttle cable linkage is installed which eliminates the linkage on the turbo intake plenum. It will now be driven by one cable wheel as the 3 bodies are linked together. The TPS is installed. Brake and clutch master are in along with the clutch pedal and wiper motor. Put the freshly plated hood catch in too. Pulled the heater core so I can find someone to braze some 90's on the hoses to go straight down towards the trans tunnel. Just waiting on my velocity stacks now and next month, the full Ti exhaust will be done. Getting close now!

Carbon kevlar stocks are done and the bases are going to anodizer to get done in black.
I got my replacement for the R30 too. A car I have wanted for a long time. One of 209 E63 AMG wagons made in 12-13 (still RWD) with the bi-turbo V8. I got the highest priced AMG wagon ever built which was $173k new and was a Designo Portfolio studio car meaning it was bought new and then sent to the AMG basement in Germany to be taken apart and rebuilt to custom spec. The interior was $48k!

I need to get rear diff bushings and my subframe doesn't have the oem ones. The poly ones I see for sale state that you reuse the original metal cups but since I don't have them, not sure what my options are.

You can get Nismo OE replacements, but they are wildly expensive for what they are. I've ran solids in a few cars and never noticed any real increase in NVH, get a set of SPL and you'll be set.

It seems the outer cups are still in the subframe so looks like I will be ok.
We mocked up the front suspension on one side only because Techno Toy Tuning sent some incorrect hardware. I also am unable to find replacement hubs so will have to clean up the existing ones before final assembly. The caliper will require 30mm of clearance from the back of the spokes on the wheels and the Watanabe's only have 10mm. It seems that if I pull the arms and camber plates in, I should be able to run a 20mm spacer and still not have any poke. I really don't want to compromise on the wheels, brakes or ride height and don't want too much camber or tire stretch.
The velocity stack bases have been anodized and will be epoxied today then shipped to me.

The wheels fit (barely) with the 20mm spacers. You can hardly fit a business card between the back of the spoke and the caliper. These tires are too wide as well so will be able to get pretty low with the 195's. Got the rear diff and axles in as well. First day in a long time working on the car where everything just went as planned.

My best friend and I were able to fit the rears with the 225/50! We had to remove the locking nuts on the upper arm to bring it all the way in but they are unecessary anyway as it also has locking bolts and cannot unthread on it's own. Will also be able to fit Wilwood rear calipers with Z32 rotors. Toyo is sending me a free set of R1R tires even though SEMA is cancelled this year. Next weekend, the car will be a full roller with steering at the final ride height. The velocity stacks arrive this week as well.

First time working on the car again in 3 weeks.
Got the passenger front side suspension and brakes installed and all 4 corners roughly dialed in at the final ride height and a very rough base alignment by eye. Steering is hooked up and got the driver side NOS door handle installed with all the linkage hooked up. Planning on getting the heater core and blower motor back in next weekend along with the dash and then it is ready to go up North for header, exhaust, radiator, catch can, power steering/coolant reservoirs and driveshaft. Then it will come back for rear brakes, wiring, fuel setup and final assembly before it goes for alignment and tuning. After all that, it will be fully wetsanded, buffed and then the entire car will be wrapped in Xpel clear film.

I wish I had an update. There hasn't been much to do while waiting for the exhaust work to be done. It's going to Freed Engineering around the 8th of January. Then they will have it for two months to do the titanium header and exhaust as well as a custom radiator, catch can, PS/coolant reservoir and likely a driveshaft.
We did get all the under dash wiring and HVAC ducting back in with custom elbows modified on the heater core to clean up the coolant hoses in the bay. I hope to start routing the OEM headlight/relay harness which will be tucked in the bay on Sunday but will see if there is time. A custom cluster insert that flush mounts the Haltech IC7 is also on the way from Mako in Australia.
Have been focusing the downtime on my E63 AMG and added a tune, intakes, down/midpipes, black ash trim, billet/poly engine mounts, front lip and french inner lenses.

Big progress made today! The main hurdle was figuring out how to route the engine bay harness with all the relays and connectors for the lights, horns etc. After removing all unecessary wires/connectors, we cut a hole in the side of the kickpanel from behind the fenders which is perfect for getting everything to the lights. Will have to lengthen the entire harness by about a foot to do the other side but now almost no wires will be visible inside the bay other than the alt/starter and a few other engine component wires.
We also routed the throttle cable but I will order a new one now that it's all mocked up. Installed the driver side door seal as well.
The car is now ready to head north for the header, exhaust, radiator, oil catch can, PS and coolant reservoirs as well as a driveshaft then it will come back for final wiring, brake lines, rear brakes and fuel lines then the reassembly. It's pretty close now.

Sure thing!
I am heading up to see the car tomorrow and discuss the stuff they will do next. I have ordered a RHD master cylinder to get the lines exiting on the other side allowing for more clearance. They also had the aluminum driveshaft made and installed it as well as making an A/N fitting for the power steering.

Final welding done. Springs clamps will be added to hold it all together. He asked me whether I wanted to keep the yellow cad hardware or swap to the Ti hardware he got for the project. I really wanted the hardware to match so he lightly heat treated it to turn gold and closely match. Perfect solution. Everything is important.

Beautiful! Is there some sort of a oring or gasket where the manifold and collector join? Or is it just a pressure fit?
Thursday7

That is incredible. I've never seen a manifold without a common flange on the head.
RVAE34
02-05-2021, 07:07 AM
I would imagine the individual flanges and the slip fit to collector setup help to allow the titanium to flex/expand/contract as well. I know some people have questioned the choice of titanium for a header and rightfully so as it can crack. But it's all well supported, well made and won't be holding a turbo or being driven too hard or frequent so it should hold up just fine. I definitely trust the judgment of the guy doing the work too.

It's just a slip fit joint, some applications use a double-slip variant.

Rear section is almost done. He wanted to do raw Ti tips, I wanted some gold but they still didn't look right. Then he polished them with the gold which looked better but not quite right. Then he brushed them. Winner.

How did you remove the plug from the wiper cover and how are going to reinstall it ,is it a certain type of rivet or something ?
Got the wiper motor cover and fasteners back from plating. Going to look so good in the bay. I may start restoring R32 GT-R wiper motors to sell. Last photo is before the restoration. The body was vapor blasted, the backing plate and motor cylinder were powdercoated and the cover/all hardware was yellow cad plated like it was when new. I also cleaned up the plug and wires and will start the reassembly today.

I drilled out the old rivots and put in new ones. I have been told standard rivots can leak water in but this car will rarely even get washed so probably not an issue. I thought I posted photos of the final assembly all back together.
Exhaust is done. He started on the radiator and swirl pot with pressure cap. He plans to make a similar PS reservoir for the other side/same location.

I loved everything done to the car except for the power steering reservoir which although very nice, looked too store bought and drew too much attention from the engine bay. So I asked him to try and hide the tank near the radiator support and swan neck the filler cap. There was this odd cutout on the driver side front rail so he used it. This is what he came up with and I love it so much better. It's now an interesting detail instead of an afterthought IMO. Everything else was so custom and interesting that I felt the PS can derserved the same treatment.
The before first of course. Also, the coolant lines and swirl pot.
The car comes home tomorrow for the first time in 2.5 years.

04-19-2021, 09:28 AM
Haha, yes, lots of updates.
First of all, I am now an official member of the Speedhunters family as a content provider which is an incredible honor!
Here are my first two features. More to come.
http://www.speedhunters.com/2021/04/a-z432-inspired-z31-restomod/
http://www.speedhunters.com/2021/04/freed-engineering/
The chassis harness for the relays and lights etc is done being lengthened and snaked through the fenders and under the front lower rad support so now it will be completely invisible. The fuel lines are all run to the tank and I just need to put the flex fuel sensor in place. New pump is in the tank.
The custom power steering reservoir was painted to match the car. All the exterior trim is on the car now except for the windshield trim as the glass will go back in last.
Custom rear lower heim shock mounts are in and fixed all of the rear issues. The S13 lowers were binding on the rubber bushing due to the angle and the tube was touching one of the lower arm bolts. No more bind and clearance was vastly improved.
Headlights are fully installed as is the bumper bar. I am hoping to get the fenders and front bumper back on the car this weekend. Tail lights are in and a friend who has done a lot of the custom fab and wiring is on the way now to help with more electrical as well as getting the rear hatch on the car.
Next will be the engine harness and battery cables.

I ended up taking the car to Driver Motorsports. They finished up all the final items needed to get the car running. There were a few issues that arose but it's all ready now.
There was an issue getting oil pressure even when priming the engine with oil at 80psi. Seems the oil pump had drained all of it's oil over 2 years of sitting. Eric at U. P. Garage told me the solution was to remove the plugs and oil filter, compress air into one breather while covering the other and then cranking the motor. Worked like a charm.
So now everything is done except for the rear brakes which they will finish as soon as a few parts arrive.
The remote base tune will be uploaded this weekend and I am going there on Monday morning to fire it up for the first time. It will be posted live to Driver Motorsports IG and YT.
I also put my AMG Wagon on the dyno. 604 RWHP and 714 ft lbs!
I tried to post some videos but not sure how to embed youtube videos here.
