Big old box of parts arrived today for the long block assembly. Tomei cam gears, tons of fasteners and seals, Nismo thermostat, N1 water pump etc etc. Pistons are going into production now and the most they could get from the mold was 11.6:1 which isn't terrible and will be safer for tuning on pump gas anyway.

Thank you!!
I cleaned up the interior, removed all window and spoiler stickers, removed the window tint, used acetone to remove the spray tint from the tail light upper and lower sections and raised the car up about 1.5".
The last two pics are the new ride height but prior to removing the tail light and window tint.

I found this which is my inspiration for the ultimate R31. Minus the rear wing, livery and canards. I love the car otherwise.
Took some more pics and plan to get some with the DSLR tomorrow at cars and coffee. Pulled the rear wing off because for some reason it really bugs me even though 90% love it. I like it better with nothing or just want a small lip on the trunk which I hope to find. Cleaned up the engine bay a little as well.

After discovering your E39 and E38 build threads I was always amazed by the sheer quality and attention to detail. Did not expect to see a thread in Zilvia from you, but glad I discovered this one because it's perfect. Can't wait for updates.

Sick build. Cool rear swap suspension
Thanks! I can't wait to drive with it after having some good drive time in the R31. They share the same rear setup basically so I would have direct comparison once the Z31 is done.

I am not a fan of the R33 but I do love the R32. The problem is that they are far too common now and I would only want a super nice GTR which would be very pricey. I think I was smart buying the R31 since they are far more rare and I am happy to have a GTS since the body is identical. I am already ordering up a number of replacement parts from Japan to really freshen the car up.

A guy who has done some render work for me owed me one and is working on how I would want my dream R31 to look in case I decide to keep and build the car. I must admit even though I bought to flip eventually, I am loving and driving the car more and more each day. Such on obscure car but rich in Nissan history/heritage and the epitome of the 80's. The front end is simply intoxicating to me as well for some reason. It's just perfectly and aggressively designed IMO.

Thank you!! I am actually selling the wheels off the E38 to buy my friend's RB25 for the R31.
The Z31 is finally getting back on track. Lifter shims have been ordered and are the final pieces for the head. The pistons are done and getting treated/coated. Those will be shipped next week too. Then this year long engine build will finally wrap up.

Pistons, rings and wrist pins arrived along with the lifter shims. Last of the required parts for the engine!
I also stopped by the body shop just as they were starting to weld the seams.

Engine bay should be wrapped up this week and I cannot wait to post final pics. Paint not long after that.
My BMW E38 M7 is going up on bringatrailer soon and I will post a link when it's live. Ready to move on after 2 years. Actually looking for another classic skyline for the stable. DR30 iron mask kouki RS turbo red/black. The end goal is beast HR31, stock'ish DR30 and the N/A RB Z31. Best of all worlds.
Stock steering wheel back in and replaced the trim below the tail lights. Better paint and sticker/logo. Gave her a bath too. I have 2 of those worn switches but waiting until I find the rest because I only want to remove the dash panel once.

I did get my reserve and made money on the car but I really thought it was going higer. But I am still happy and am replacing it with two cars. One of which will be finalized tomorrow morning and the other is being inspected in Japan over night and then purchased within 48 hours if it checks out.

Enlarged throttle bodies (49mm) with new plates, bearings, seals, bore coating and freshly plated hardware.
https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4781/38984970490_c4dbc23f5d_b.jpg
Do you remember what product was used for the throttle plate sealing? After doing some research i'm up to Molykote 321 as the prefered stuff to use? As far as the application it's unclear if you are supposed to let it Fully cure (24hrs+) before cracking the plates open, of if you open them when it is tacky and not fully cured. And man is that stuff expensive! Also not sure if brush on or aerosol is better.

That's why I have AAA and many several backup vehicles. That's the risk with anything made in Germany.Likewise, but it still doesn't make it any less inconvenient nor the subsequent $1,400 dealer bill any less painful.
I do prefer the M113k to the turbo engines. Simpler, more down low instant torque and the SOHC engines sounds way better.
To bad no one makes an Eaton setup for these engines. A 2.65 would be wicked.

Risk vs reward I suppose. Luckily I got a hell of a deal on this car with a massive pile of service history. Everything was done at MB and the car was taken in for the slightest of issues. It's a dream find as far as these cars go imo.

Weistec 2.9L whipple, eurocharged tuning, weistec twin pump water cooled FMIC, snow methanol system, long tube headers, race cats, full exhaust etc. I know the builder who described it as a blank check build!
Sounds like an awesome car. It seems most people who have gone from W211 E55 to E63 or the other way almost always like the 55 more, its one of my all time favorite MB's. A coworker has a 42k mile 06 CLS55 that is stock. All my current MB's are slow. :(
Even though the biturbo V8's are awesome, I was talking about the S/CL/SL 600/65 V-12 cars. I keep forgetting MB has turbos all over the place now. I had an 06 S600, sooo much torque and soooo smooth and comfy.

The engine bay of the Z31 was just about wrapped up this weekend until they ran out of gass. Literally. I should have engine updates very soon.
The Skyline should be leaving Japan soon too and can't wait to see it.
Meanwhile, had the E55 polished and ceramic coated.

Love it! My favorite interior on the W211.
I had an 06 E500 4matic wagon. I bought it with 201k miles on it, sold it to a friend at 217k about a year ago and he has close to 240k on it now. The interior held up extremely well and looked better than some cars with 40k. The drivers bolster was the only noticeable issue. The only major exterior issues were the headlights yellowing and your typical rock chips. Your car should last a looong time.

My machinist called me yesterday to say last chance to get pics before it starts going together.
While I was there he ran the crank on the balancer and said it's within NASCAR tolerance. He checked all the pistons and removed some weight to get them balanced and he had to slightly hone out the rods for the wrist pins.
CP said they wanted .0015 gap from piston to deck height at TDC and with the slight decking to get the block clean, it's slightly less than that at .00135 so after he does the final flow bench test on the head to check how much improvement was made, he can put it all back together and check valve to piston clearance and worst case, I get a slightly thicker head gasket but he doesn't think it's enough of a difference to matter so we will see.
Also added some carbon to the E55 ;)

Have you considered anything other that wats? There's so many old school wheel options that would look righteous on that thing when you have wats on the Z31, with a few rebuilding options for smaller wheels stateside now. Impul D-01s or Starsharks would look the part. Just my $.02, you obviously have this figured out.

Talked to my machinist. The head flowed 90cfm over stock which he didn't have the base numbers for at the moment. By his calculations, the engine can make 400hp as is naturally aspirated but of course it most likely won't on pump gas. I was always hoping for 300 rwhp so we will see.
The body is being mocked up so it can be painted.
Dropped off the front subframe and torsion bar brackets for powdercoat and got a high quality reman steering rack.

Machinist got the tighter main bearings and had crank, one rod and piston in so he can check piston to valve clearance.
He said he recalls stock intake cfm being 148 and he got it to 238! Got 75% of that on exhaust. Huge increase! He said should be done very soon now.

I'm loving that FJ20ET in the R30. It's literally the predecessor to the sr20 and is basically an iron block sr20 with better valvetrain. Huge potential for power and durability but aftermarket support is few and far between outside of custom parts. Love it.

Thank you, gentlemen!!
I went by to talk how we wanted the rear bumper to look. The first plan was to section, shorten and shave the 87-89 bumper but after we started comparing the two on the car, we decided to use the early rear bumper and he would start sectioning it. I was adament about having the rear bumper 1.5-2" closer to the body to match more modern proportions and ideally, I wanted to replicate the depth of an R34 GTR rear bumper. 30 minutes later he sent me this pic which is perfect!! He is going to fill that center bumper body line that's totally out of place too btw. The other two pics are just the start of the final mockup before paint. He was going to spend all day today and all day Monday on that so will post more photos soon.

About a year or so ago, all the detailed photos I had from the intial teardown got deleted somehow when there was a software update on my phone. I checked everywhere and could not find them. It was a heart wrenching moment when I realized it because I took such great care to document everything. Always knew the easiest thing would be to find another car to have and dissasemble it as I reassemble the other one. Mainly under the dash because I removed everything and it was quite a bit more complex than you would imagine. Can't hurt to have some spare parts along the way as well.
Today I found that car after searching almost daily ever since that initial moment where I lost everything. I only wanted something $500 or less and local within 20-30 miles. Not much to look at and has a locked up wheel but it's complete and original. They wanted $600, I offered $400 and then told them $500 and they could just call me back. We settled there and I think it's absolutely worth it. I already know of at least 3 parts I need which I have not been able to find.
I also just realized it has the $200+ mudflaps!

Machinist is putting the oil pump and crank gear on today! Then he can check the piston to valve clearance. The only slightly questionable number is the piston to deck clearance. CP wanted the flat portion of the piston to come out of the deck .014 inch and it's at .016 now. Hopefully minor enough that I don't need to up the HG from 1.2mm to 1.5mm. Very exciting that it's finally coming together.
Stopped by the body shop and the Kouki front end is all fitted and gapped. He is going to do some modificatons to eliminate the annoying rubber trim strip that goes between the bumper and fenders/hood. That and the long rear bumper have always been the small details I hated the most about the Z31. The side skirts are dry fitted and he will need to tighten them up a tad without the rubber gasket strip. I want everything to be super clean and tight.

Very nice. Yes that line from the front wing to the bumper needs to be handled! Maybe able it up so it seems to progress into the fender or just eliminate it altogether like you were saying. I like the mismatch of colors too haha. but I know it will all be one in the end. That hue of yellow is so good

The hood part is easy because you can slide the bracket forward ever so slightly. But the front sides of the bumper are moulded to have that piece so the mounting points stick out past the edge. They plan to cut that off and make a tab on the back side to reinforce and will adhere it back on. I am sure that is easy compared to everything else he has done so far. The side skirts don't quite bit as tight as we thought either so he plans to make a few modifications to bring them tighter to the body. It's really close now and I cannot wait to see it all in that color! But yes, the multi has quickly grown on me and it's been referred to as the Harlequin Z31 now lol.
Here is the piece being removed. It's a weird trim/spacer piece and when removed, creates a 1/8-3/16" gap between the bumper and fenders/hood.

The guy who bought my R31 wanted to have it painted before he took delivery. It's almost finished and then he will be back on my car. Engine should be finished any time and all he wants to do now is check piston to valve clearance with aggressive cam settings. Going to try and use some Mikuni 44PHH velocity stacks on the RB26 throttle bodies and just notch the holes since the RB is 70mm and the Mikuni's are 65mm center to center.

I definitely need to raise it back up a tad but man it looks good like this. I simply adore this car and am so impressed/pleased with my purchase. The underside is incredible with no rust or leaks of any sort. Everything is adjustable. Heims on the rear trailing arms, beautifully finished off rear upper shock adjusters accesible from the interior, adjustable tension rods, 2" bump steer spacers and almost all hardware is still cad plated. The interior is super nice and the racing seat really doesn't bother me.
The paint is very well done but it is not glass out so there is some minor tape lines on some of the rubber but it doesn't bother me at all. The hood fitment/finish is better than I expected being fiberglass but I am still looking for a stock steel one.
Best riding coilovers I have ever experienced.
Getting used to the diff but still definitelely want to switch to something more streetable.
Lastly, I kind of like the all green so not sure if I will follow through with the 2 tone wrap or not. Will at least give it a while.

The Z31 is back in action. There were some unsightly gaps to the body with the 87-89 side skirts on the 86 and the skirts themselves had small notches in the edge so my body guy trimmed them and welded in some metal which he shaped to close the gaps and retain the OE door gapping.

The engine is finally done after timeserts were installed in all the stud holes. The issue ended up almost doubling my expected budget and in the end, I should have started with an RB30 or 26 block but the dissasembly was the same price no matter what and the block was already bored, decked with all the custom specs on the piston being used from the head/block so....
I won't be able to pick it up until October but the car likely won't be ready to come home anyway.
Either way, it's really close to being back so I can get to work on putting it back together.

Front end is getting together and he is going above and beyond to get the gaps and surfaces all perfect.
The plan for the rear bumper was to put a filler piece in where the plywood is now but I feel like it makes the rear horizontal surface look too tall. I suppose if the bevel radius was perfectly carried around, it might not be too bad though. I was thinking drop that entire top section down to where it was cut making sure the top is flat and then build up the top under the tail lights/license plate recess and where the bumper meets the quarter to make sure that body line is mirrored. Thoughts?

The front bumper has the ugly bulging trim strips bonded and shaved along with the emblem hole. Now he just has to make the front spoiler fit better and finish the rear bumper and it's ready for paint!
Also, Watanabe R type's showed up 1.5 months early and fitment is dead on. Barely any clearance for the calipers.

so stoked for you man. I've been waiting to see that engine come home for ages, I can't imagine how excited you are to finally have it back. You're doing an awesome build for the z31 community. Definitely an inspiration my own 87 z31 turbo. Keep up the hard work man, I cannot wait for the NA RB to screaming down the road.

Greatly appreciate the kind words, everyone!
There had been a few cracks in the primer so he took a bunch of areas back down to metal on the main body. Rear bumper progressing well and he took the liberty of sanding the inner doors down to bare metal which I didn't even ask! He is trying to make my car the ultimate showcase of his abilities and I am happy to be a rolling billboard for his work!

The color is an original Nissan color used on the 240z and Hakosuka GT-R. It is my favorite Datsun/Nissan color and was the one on the 240Z my dad and I restored together. It's perfectly fitting for my vision of a restored Z31 version of a Datsun 240Z Z432.
The body should be painted tomorrow!

3rd most difficult part of the project. Behind the engine bay/S14 rear subframe swap.
This bumper is intended to look more like a kouki rear without the over riders/bumper crash bulges. It's sectioned into 7 pieces, shortened to the body by 2-3" and then shaved. Entirely made from a zenki bumper.

Last parts should be painted tomorrow or Tuesday! Until then, some shots I took of the R30.

Thanks, everyone!!!
Front bumper is on and the final major item is getting proper fitment of the JDM style front spoiler which fit terribly out of the box. Next is the underside getting sprayed all black, final assembly of the car, cut and polish then painting and installing the trim. So close!!

Wetsanding commences. He said it will be ready to leave in 2 weeks! Then I will have it towed to the place that does XPel clear wrap to have the front bumper, hood, fenders and rockers done then it will go to my best friends house for wiring and the installation of the engine and brand new R34 5 speed transmission. Then back to me for the rest of the reassembly.

Seeing an update on this car is like seeing a notification that Bad Obsession Motorsports has an update on project Binky.
You might have already answered this, but is the work being done at a large collision repair shop or is it a couple of guys that do unique repairs/builds like yours? There are some interesting cars in the background of some of your pics.
Either way they do amazing work and the car is beautiful, cannot wait to see it done.

Yeah, just a small shop with 3 guys. No insurance work. He really just wants to do stuff like my project. My goal/dream is to retire early and build cars like this to sell. Hopefully that will happen sooner than later and I have a bunch of friends who are all amazing in individual fields that I'd like to pool together for an all in one custom shop.

I work at a body shop, we are mainly an insurance repair shop. I do minor restorations when I have time on the side. Would love to have the time, wife + 2 kids under 6 + house = no time for big toy projects. :wtc:

You mean the r30? Because I had an r31 too but sold it to buy this r30. I bought this car from Japan mostly as you see but added the Watanabe's and 2 tone. It was similarly built though with extensive modification and amazing attention to detail. I was really nervous buying a car sight unseen from Japan but in the end it was about twice as good as I could have hoped. I basically stole it.

Undercoat is done. Now just finish buffing and paint/install the trim and rubber door/t top seals and she comes home. I would imagine 7-10 days. He also notched the frame rails and welded in some metal to box it in so that the control arms can have full clearance just in case I ever wanted it to almost lay frame. Not that I ever will but I wouldn't ever want to have to go back in and have it done.

By chance have you or your dad ever come to the Carlisle PA, Import and Performance car show? this year it is from may 15th-17th. This year there is a 50 years of Datsun Z display. Check this link for info!!

I've been going to that show for 10+ years now and its dwindled down in size from the tuner show, so they added the import/kit car show together in hopes of making the show bigger in size.. I'll have my S13 there at the show this year for sure. I hope to see you or meet you if you guys go!!

Bought an ultrasonic cleaner along with a bunch of CLR for cleaning factory bolts. The first two images is before and after with just 20 minutes at 50 degrees celcius. My friend is getting other parts in order. The car should be a roller again this week and should be coming home soon.

I'd love too see some of your dad's/friends Z's at Carlisle this year RVAE. This will be my 4th year there, not usually one for car shows but the variety there is always impressive. The drifting there is subpar but it's a good season-start shakedown event with plenty of other activities and partying to do. It's basically lawless there.
Sucks that the covid may fuck it up. Carlisle is a blast even though it's just a car show with lackluster drifting.
Cool progress on the thread as always.

The engine bay is being wetsanded and buffed now and it's looking incredible. The rear subframe is cleaned up and installed and the front subframe will go in tomorrow. All that is left is the body to be wetsanded/buffed, the cargo bay will sprayed in the safari gold, the tail panel to be sprayed the trim color and the body panels/door rubber and T top seals to be installed. I am hoping it will be towed to my friends house on Sunday but might be a stretch.

Not being nit picky just out of a pure safety standpoint;
It looks like your double-adjusters on the rear suspension arms aren't adjusted properly, from what I can see it seems one side of each adjuster is fully threaded in, while the other half is outward. They should be "equally" adjusted, as in set them fully shortened and use the center nut to adjust longer so that both threads (standard and reversed) extend equally.
Or i'm seeing it wrong, just noticed the center adjust nut is touching the arm on most of them.
RVAE34
03-20-2020, 05:45 PM
Nothing is even remotely adjusted properly yet. It's a long way from getting the suspension set up. I'll get it close with the string method getting equal lengths before being towed to an alignment shop. Probably 2-3 months from now.

No, just digital now.
Sectioned, shortened and shaved rear bumper put on the car for the first time. Will take some tweaking to get the gaps just right but I had to just get it loosely bolted to the car to see it. Fuel rail, injectors and power steering pump are on the car and I had to order a few extra pieces. Haltech oil pressure, fuel pressure and ECU coolant temp sensors. The first test velocity stack was also made but they are refining the release process as it broke coming out of the mold. They are practicing with carbon before switching to kevlar.

Still waiting on the engine mounts from Japan but the engine is getting really close to being complete. Just waiting on the Ross water pulley to arrive along with the LS alternator kit then I just need an alternator and starter and that's about it. I have a tinted acrylic Watanabe oil cap on the way too. The next photos are of a Nissan D21 hardbody speedometer sensor which fits the NOS R34 5 speed transmission since the Skyline uses an electronic speedo and the Z31 uses a cable. I will just need to figure out the correct gear once the car is driveable. Lastly, my R30 parked next to a JDM Supra at my friends house and then a night shot I took of the 30 as well.

I will be. I haven't gotten the sway bars or strut towers yet.
Some minor z31 updates as I am still waiting for engine brackets from Japan.
My intake manifold, vacuum tube, throttle bodies, water necks and windshield wiper motor parts are at a specialist who restores GT-R parts using vapor blasting and then puts a corrosion resitant material over the bare aluminum. He is making it all look factory new and replacing all hardware with yellow cad. He shaved off the bosses from the vacuum tube that are used to mount the stock wiring harness case since we are doing a full wire tuck. It looks so much better without these and he re-textured the aluminum by hand to make it look stock. He shaved off the casting marks too. Mine is on the right and original is left. The last photos are of the guys restored parts. Looks factory fresh.
The guy doing my velocity stacks made a test one in carbon but he wasn't happy with the outer finish so he made a billet mold for the outer too so it will be 100% perfect. Cannot wait to see the kevlar velocity stacks!
I also took my R30 to Driver Motorsports for the day. They are doing some youtube videos. They also put it on the dyno.

Unfortunately, I ran into a slight issue with my engine build. I realized that since my block was for a head with hydraulic lifters, it would create an issue with overfilling the head with oil so it's at the machinist getting the head pulled back off to block off the rear oil feed and having the front one stepped down a tiny bit. Shame this came to light so late. Sucks that this happened but better now than when in the car. Could have been catastrophic too! Luckily the head and bottom end can remain assembled and just has to have the head removed. Ordered a new HG just in case too.
My brackets finally shipped from Japan too so they should be here in a week or so. The engine will be back from the machinist this weekend.

All my intake parts, vaccum rail, water necks and wiper motor housing have been restored and holy $hit! He also removed the bosses off the top of the vacuum rail that the stock harness case mounted too since everything will be tucked. Then he re-textured. All aluminum was vapor blasted and coated with corrosion inhibitor, all re-plated hardware, OEM sticker and factory paint/QC marks. It's incredible!
First photo is how they looked when I got them. And remember, the ITB's were bored to 48mm and the intake manifold was port matched to the ITB's and head work.

what company's doing the restoration on the small parts like the throttle bodies and what's the cost for those services? Also, what is the black stuff around the throttle body plates?

Black stuff is sealer. Big problem is when people try and clean up Rb26 throttle bodies, they wipe all this away and then it never runs right afterwards.
This refresh is so proper :)

Remade in the USA did all the restoration but EFI hardware in Australia did the boring and re-building of the ITB's along with the throttle seal paint before Remade restored the outer housings and re-plated all the hardware.

That's sealant for the throttle blade that every kid removes from their throttle body when they "clean" it and then it has a vacuum leak.

Got a lot of work done but didn't have enough time to get it in the car today. Swapped out all the front incorrect hardware with the proper fasteners, modified the front heater hose port to go straight back instead of out, swapped the clutch mechanism in the trans from pull type to push type, drilled and tapped for new slave cylinder location, drilled the plug out for the rear sump dipstick tube, installed the pilot bushing, flywheel and clutch along with the transmission. We have decided to put the crossmember on the engine and then put everything in from the bottom.

Turns out the NA 300zx crossmember doesn't work :( I thought I checked the part numbers and they were the same with NA 300 and a ZR. I have found a full ZR drivetrain in Japan that I am trying to buy though and then will have my guys there strip all the parts I want off and trash the engine/trans etc.
We did install all of the accessories and only the starter is left. It looks so good! Coffee table worthy.

Got an entire 200zr drivetrain in Japan. Having the crossmember, oil pan, engine/trans mounts, valve covers and ecu shipped over and scrapping the rest. Should be here in 2 weeks, will have it all powdercoated and will sell everything but the crossmember.
