View Full Version : sr20 oil temp, to run a oil cooler or not?

so recently got my sr running after a few years on a build and im curious about normal oil temps

driving around town im at about 165-185 degrees
once I hit the freeway im up to about 200 degrees cruising at 75 which is roughly 3k rpms
when drifting oil temps initially drop back down to 165-185 then creep up to about 210 and stay there
all the while water temps hover anywhere from 140-180 (im running Altima fans which seriously do the job for cooling so when they are on I run 140 degrees water temp no matter what, sensor location is midway between engine and radiator in lower hose)

so in regards to my oil temp does that sound normal? im pulling temp from a filter sandwhich plate, should I move my sensor to my oil pan? I have seen a few people mention wonky readings from a pressurized source, not sure how true that is, I feel like the filter location gives a truer reading of internal engine oil temps

I have considered buying a oil cooler but that idea has never really appealed to me, further to pump the oil, more opportunities for pressure loss and just overall a hassle compared to just leaving it all stock if possible

thoughts?

Increased oil capacity, cooler better maintained oil, ability to put a thermostat inline to only open when needed, cool JDM sweg.

Nope only down sides to me, idk why track cars run them.

I didn't notice any oil pressure drop when I installed an oil cooler on my sr20, and this is one I've had installed for 8 years after importing it and never been rebuilt. Still has perfect oil pressures. I run Mobil 1 15/50.


Get a thermostatic cooler setup so that it's not flowing through the cooler until the oil is hot.

ya my biggest fear was a pressure drop (which most track cars wouldn't have to worry about with dry sump setups and upgraded pumps..........) and I would definitely be running a thermostatic cooler, cold oil is just as bad as oil that's to hot lol

Well short of a dry sump set-up, there is no "upgraded" pump for the SR, even the aftermarket ones are made to OEM spec. The only relatively bolt on upgrade would be a VE oil pump that requires many additional parts to function correctly.

As for the coolers, any car that sees extend RPM should be running a cooler, not only for the cooling capabilities but for the increased oil capacity that SRs dramatically lack.

Questions like this are better asked on sites like nissan road racing. If you want to get lost for a few hours learning how to optimize an SR look there.

thank you, I have never thought to look into road racing sites for nissans, I just figured everyone used them just for drifting lol but I will definitely look into that (no sarcasm intended haha)

Yeah, you'll have a bit of a culture shock looking on nissan road racing as most of the guys work in the engineering field, rather than the kids on Zilvia that are living paycheck to paycheck that just slap together whatever they have so they can tell everyone about their racekor
