View Full Version : 5 bolt turbo to DP gasket or rtv?

Hi all - I've been hearing an exhaust leak on my redtop sr for a while and finally got a chance to troubleshoot it this weekend. It blew the manifold to turbo gasket to pieces.
While I had it all apart I noticed there's no gasket for the turbo to downpipe connection. What are my options? The 5 bolt pattern looks different from a t25/28, it is a precision turbo. Looks like it may have had a gasket at one point but was assembled with rtv most recently (see dimpled impressions and red residue), but I'm just guessing.

Is that common and what should I use going forward? Is this what you'd call a "ford pattern" 5 bolt? All the generic t25/28/t3 5 bolt gaskets look to have a different pattern.

Here's the turbo side:

And the downpipe side:

And for good measure the blown manifold gasket:

Thanks, I'll order a gasket. Any tips on cleaning the mating surfaces? Sandpaper or just some brake cleaner?

Brake clean and razor blade

In normal situations, yes brake cleaner and razor blade is good.

however, looking at the carbon buildup on your turbine/manifold, you will need a bit more than that. I would use a wire wheel because that carbon forms very very hard high spots that will facilitate leaks if left alone. At first it might seem like it isn't even coming off, or it might trick you into thinking its part of the manifold; but make no mistake, that black thin layer will come off if you spend enough time on it. Then, once you are sure you are back down to metal, I would check for flatness with a straight edge.

Awesome information, thank you both! I will give it a go with a wire wheel and get it put back together.

Make sure that you don't get the wrong 5 bolt gasket.

Fingers crossed I ordered the right one, I got this:

It looked right but didn't have any measurements
