AWR S13 Coupe Street/Drift Build {Project Phoenix}
What’s up guys, Well first off my name is Andrew.. I am from northern Virginia and I have been involved in cars since I can truly remember. Not only has it been a passion of mine but it eventually transitioned into a career for some years and then into an online parts business I have been running since 2013. I have owned a decent amount of fun toys over the years; Couple DSM’s making big power, E36 M3, S14, G37, Evo 9 and the list goes on. But I recently picked up a new project that I have been very excited about since day one. Although there was some ups and downs in the first couple months of ownership (nothing having to do with the car) everything has worked out and I am now in a position to start focusing on reviving this car back into a track killing monster it once was!! “Project Phoenix”
After selling my evo this past spring I knew I wanted something different… Something I have never really owned or have built before. Being an AWD guy my whole life, I thought it was time to make a transition. I always wanted a high hp RWD car, and since throwing a pair of twin turbos on my G37s was an interesting idea and had the BADA$$ factor…that potential project was instantly crushed while doing more in depth research. The best kit on the market was $9-10k before supporting mods, and I kept hearing about cooling issues and such. I just didn’t want to deal with those headaches if I could avoid it. Since my first choice of RWD projects was a letdown I turned to craigslist to see what exactly was out there and if anything would catch my eye. And of course something did! I came across an ad with this title “FS: 89 240sx S13 Silvia Drift Car” Now I have always wanted a badass tracked out s13, I mean who doesn’t? Also I always thought drifting looked like ton of fun when I would watch the cars run heats at hyper-fest. So a couple emails and phone calls later I was heading down 81 south to check out this beast.
The name Nate Brasz might sound familiar to some of you? Nate competed in many drifting events, and from what I have seen and heard he was very good. Although he may have moved on from drifting into other ventures, I feel lucky to be the new owner of this car and am very excited to take it out to our first track day together.
On to the pictures..... :]
Current state of the car when we went to see it.

Car was pretty clean inside and out. Frame rails looked okay. Power steering cooler lines were leaking some. Compression was slightly low but all very close to one another. Z32 tranny synchro's were toast as well. Hour or so later we came to an agreement and my buddy and I were loading it onto the trailer.

As some of you probably saw, the car was missing many interior pieces. Yes I know its a drift car but I like my interiors to be stock and as clean looking as possible. This is a street/drift build after all :]
Here is a pic of me re finishing some interior trim pieces.

After bringing the car home I found out quickly it had a draining issue. I didn't really have time to work on the car so it sat for a couple of weeks before I was able to discover the problem. The alternator was complete shot and draining the small battery every time I went to mess with it. So I took the alt out and got it rebuilt locally.
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nQxs223bXn0/VdH2wQFKzmI/AAAAAAAAAtI/qZoWDBK_aGM/s1600/i.JPG
Took a little time to clean, prep, and re-spray the floors before test fitting the seats.

Here is the where the build gets a little more in depth. I decided it was time to replace the broken tranny and the get the car ready before the end of the season. I want to try and make it out to 100 drifters of December this year.
After countless hours trying every trick to remove the z32 tranny from the bottom. We decided to pull it out...... This was my first time pulling a motor on a 240sx. probably wont be my last :2f2f:

Looks like the spray on rhino line stuff? If so how well does it hold up over time? One would think it would chip off somewhat easier

Some coolant for refilling the rad, brake clean just cause it was on sale, and a new KA pilot bushing (which im told the SR and KA are the same, correct me if I am wrong), And a 300ZX TT Fuel filter. Also grabbed a spare clutch alignment tool from ACT.

ISIS performance Straight pipe w/ 4" tips. I love the look of this exhaust on all SR's. I originally wanted the 3" tips but it was on backorder.. So I grabbed one of the 4" they have left on the shelf. I think I made the right choice. :)

The 3" tips are on back-order? I got mine about a year ago and the 4" tips were on back-order so I went with the 3" I'll trade you haha. Really nice progress tho, loving the way this seems to be going. I hope you really fix that hack job of wiring.

Small update.
Got a little more organized with tools and labeled all my bags of bolts & nuts that go to the car. I will be prepping the bay this weekend for quick paint job. I'm just going to rattle can it this time around. When and if I decide to TUB the front end then I will go crazy with a engine bay refresh.
The goal right now is to make it out to 100 drifters of December! So every day counts.

Also I was shipped arp extended studs in a 12x1.50 format so I had them swapped out for correct 12x1.25.

Spent this weekend cleaning up the bay and sorting out the engine harness. Eventually I want to run the fuse box inside but for now this will do. Just need to pick up a few more parts.. And I will be ready to reinstall the motor.
First off here is my Dad helping to remove the OEM battery tray. This is starting to turn into a father son project which is kinda cool.

Tip. When you spray stand 18" back and mist it on. It will take 3-5 coats for full coverage

Decided to redo my cluster bezel in the SEM chip guard last night. I think it came out decent. It has a little darker finish, because it already had a satin black under coat to it.

The flywheel was very had to put on /slip on over the crank lip. I put a little lithium grease which helped but I really had to tap it on hard. (the broken bolt is only there as a guide for the holes) I have ARP flywheel bolts on the way.
My question is...Does the flywheel look seated properly? As of right now I am able to screw those bolts in by hand until, the bolt head touches the flywheel. Then I tighten them to 60 Ftlb as a test. It feels right to me, but I am unsure. This is my first Flywheel install on a sr20.

Well it was a long Saturday this past weekend, putting the motor back in the car.
I spent about an hour Saturday morning making sure the SPEC D clutch, and flywheel were clean and ready for install. I Loctite'd all the flywheel bolts and the pressure plate bolts as well.
Went to install the tranny and the input shaft put up a little fight going in. Lubed it with a tiny bit of lithium grease and it finally decided to give in.
After that we dropped here in. Now this was a little tougher then I thought it would be. Trying to hit those slots with the motor mount studs was a challenge.

Got a little more done last night :hsdance:
Finalized some wire routing, plugged in more sensors. Made sure I had enough grounds for the motor. This is something that has always slowed me down on start ups.
1 from the coil pack harness to the head.
1 on the head to the firewall.
2 on the intake manifold (either side) to the chassis and firewall.
1 from the block tranny area to the chassis.
1 from the battery to the chassis.
1 from the fuse box to the chassis. etc (if I am missing any please let me know)
Filled the car will oil.
Installed the fan.
Installed the rad and shroud, which I modified a little, so I can pull it out easier.
Bolted in the power steering cooler and lines.
I went to install my tranny cross member last night and the bolt holes are not lining up properly. I am going to level the car back out and look at it again.
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-9I1u1eYOs84/Vhz6VU7SSJI/AAAAAAAAA3U/B3VmLFKQ4ls/s1600/dd2.JPG
Front core support mocked up. I need to find some plates and bolt the top together properly.
Next on the list will be to install the intercooler and finalize some piping revisions.

What do you consider a quality piece? The greddy turbo outlet that was rusted and cracked?
Wiring will be cleansed up. Currently it works which is a plus for me. So it will be fine for now. This winter I plan to do a nice new panel.

rpf1 and seats
Rpf1 well after buying this car that makes this the 4th set of rpf1s iv owned. Iv been wanting to change it up with this build, so bye bye they went. I sold them for cash and traded for the other set, for the wheels I have currently. plus it got me into 18" for now which is what I wanted. Plus my rpf1 needed to be re finished.
Just like the wheels the seats needed to be refinished also. Quoted $1500 for original refinish. Which is the only way I would do it. They were also hard mounted in and since the last owner was 6 foot tall and I'm 5-8" I decide to switch it up. The bride reps are just there for now. I plan to go status or race tech next year.
Honestly just preference as of now. Nothing in the car was really worth putting more money into refinishing. Rather by new it used new just for now.

Build update 10/19/15.
Got a lot of the smaller details completed this weekend.
-Bolted in the Rad shroud.
-Made brackets for my removable core support. (Sorry no pic :/)
-After I installed the brackets, I was able to mount the FMIC and work on the piping. This is when things started to slow down at least on the drive side.
Mocking up the piping before secure the T-bolts.

Passenger side FMIC done
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-TO4wQEfqHXY/ViTe9EAfHaI/AAAAAAAAA3w/6chpgrf-e4s/s1600/FMIC%2Bpipe.JPG
Started working on the driver side. This side took the longest to setup. Because I needed to open up the hole in the chassis more and more to make everything fit correctly. The way they were ran before caused a lot of pull and rubbing all over the front part of the body. It was pretty obvious after removing all the old couplers as there were tears and holes in them. I decided to use a 8" coupler to help reduces some of those issues. I think it came out pretty good.

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-B__sKoHcVh8/ViTfFc07WKI/AAAAAAAAA4I/YIpp3RGNn70/s1600/driver%2Bside%2Bturbo.JPG

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-MYO1KTaxx0Y/ViTfaJy6G9I/AAAAAAAAA4U/cJ72P6lq60U/s1600/bad%2Baem.JPG

Worked on the car for about 2 hours last night.
Installed my new AEM sensor.
Topped off all my fluids.
Bolted in my slave cylinder.
Found a wire for my fuel pump I didn't reinstall. Put that back in the the right location.
Installed my Downpipe and the rear section of my exhaust. I'm holding off on the mid pipe until I get the driveshaft installed.
Im glad I went with 4" tips :]

Like this build, I need to do the removable core support myself, just wish someone made weld in brackets or something for that!
I wouldn't have sold the z32 conversion to go back to an s13 trans though, might have been better off getting the syncros rebuilt instead. It's nice not worrying about breaking a trans.

Thanks for the input. The current removable core support was not hard to make at all. Eventually I want to have brackets welded on for more structural support. I plan to revisit it next year.
If you look closely at the core support you will see 4 shiny bolt heads two on each side. I have a decent size aluminum bracket bolted in underneath the support. Also you can see where we made the cuts.
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-86vEq8MYC70/ViTfkqhVuLI/AAAAAAAAA4w/T7yC0ylHAhU/s1600/front%2Bfmic.JPG
In all honesty the Xcessive Z32 kit wasn't all that great in my opinion. Big hassel to replace. The tranny fitment is extremely tight, and the flywheel spacer becomes more of a headache.
Yes I run the risk of breaking a trans but it turned out both of those z32 trans I got with the car were damage in one way or another. So it was in my best interest to switch back. The SR tranny with serve me well for now. and I have a spare as a back up just incase.
The end goal for me is to go LS or JZ. Haven't decided just yet.

Well it was a long and frustrating Saturday working on the car. Any and everything that could fight me to be installed did.
-All four tranny bracket bolt holes, had to be re-tapped and cleaned before the bolts would go in.
-1 Carrier bracket bolt hole had to be re-tapped as well.
-Bracket fought me a little to line up.
-Drive shaft went on kinda easy then stopped about the last quarter inch and was a paint to get the rear piece over the diff. Little grinding took care of that.
-Tranny fluid fill up was the easiest part.
-Realized I need a test pipe section to complete my exhaust install. :/ I said screw it and decided to go open DP the AEM v1 is setup for it anyways.
-Thought I was all set topped off all my fluids and went to start the car. crank crank crank nothing. Ohhh and then smoke coming out of the harness. Turns out I ground a power wire! Great, awesome way to try and start the car. Found the issue and fixed it. Tried to start it again and crank crank crank nothing. At this point nothing. I got fuel and compression just no spark. decided to pull my worn plugs and put in new ones.
start try #3 crank crank crank nothing.
Started to check fuses and other things nothing that jumped out at me. So at this point. I either fried something, something isn't connected, or the s chassis gods just don't like me.
hoping I didn't mess up something expensive.

Build Update 11/9/15 (The big Move)
After having more wiring issues then I would want to admit it came time to make a decision on what to do with the car. My Dad was kind enough to let me use his tool barn up to this point but with winter pretty much here in VA he needs to get it ready to move all his tools inside. So I decide to bring the car home.
I don't have any pics of the move but we moved really quick Sunday morning so everyone could enjoy the afternoon.

Update.
Harness is in and now I'm currently working on setting up the master kill switch. My battery is possibly done.
Also decide to flock my dash today.
Over all experience with it. You need two people. Make sure you roll it on as smooth as possible I got runs in two places while I was setup up my spray can. Clean up is a mess and honestly that part almost has me turned off to this whole process.
I'm still waiting for the dash to dry but overall I feel the results look promising. I can see areas I slightly missed due to not enough coating in that spot. But it looks better then my blue cracked dash and that's all I really wanted.

Looks great! Yeah clean up can be a pain. I laid out a large clear plastic film under my setup to contain the excess. At first glance it already looks x1000 better.

Thank Scottie,
It is 100x better then what it was. Couldn't stand that weird blue looking dash. I have plastic everywhere it just made a huge mess in my garage lol. I didn't even realize how much of a mess I made until I went to switch to my other air can.

So turns out my FPR gauge realized I was finally getting my way with the car, after so many months and decide it didn't like that. The liquid jell on the gauge decide to all come out. It wasn't to bad of a clean up. Bought a Turbosmart replacement fuel gauge. Installed it last night and fired her back up.

Holiday weekend update.
Drove the car today.. It was an experience to say the least. It's LOUD, and showed me what I still need to do to get this car reliable. Boost comes on weird I think the tune is just not right or to aggressive up top. Lastly I don't think the alt is charging the battery at this time.
Thanks for reading. More progress updates coming soon!

First off, thank you for the kind words. Its been an experience to say the least. Although I will say I think our builds are on two completely different levels. Yours is what I wish mine was all along. But it will come. I do plan to go LS in the future.
Yes I did get the car running just for it to turn on me again. With further electric gremlins to figure out. I do feel I have a good lead on them tho after talking with my friend.
The car use to be a pro 2 car from what I was told. The suspension is a F-auto custom spec setup and all supporting suspension arms. (not sure what the specs are tho) but it feels decent right now. There has been a ton of improvement on suspension systems over the last 5 years so I will be taking a look at those once the car is running and tuned. I would like to make it to the first drift events in my area next season.
The car has been a headache since day one. Lesson Learned. But if 2015 is anything like 2016 I'm not sure how much longer I will have the patience's for this car.

This car was for sale on the List in my area for quite some time and I made sure to stay far away! Sorry you had to deal with the headache.
It's almost always better to spend the extra and get one built to quality spec than the backyard special :(
However, the car sounds pretty good and once you patiently work through all the kinks, you should be able to diagnose and solve any problem blind folded with a Margarita in your hand :)

Monday night update. My buddy Tyler came over and helped take measurements of the shim's with the BC 264 mounted. All were in "cold" factory measurements. The bc is about .002 - .003 out from what they call for. I'm going to leave it be and just get the head cleaned, and checked out.
Also I started to clean up the residue from the block and old head gasket. I'm going to check the deck for being in spec later this week also. More cleaning to go.

So im starting to get anncy with this build as I have been watching others makes progress on theirs.
So here is a small update and also a schedule of what should be happening over the next month.
Build Schedule:
-Drop off about 8 items for powder coating this week.
-Torn the head off the block to check both cam to shim tolerances and to get it ready to drop off at the machine shop. Just to get it checked out and install my new seals and spring/retainer kit.
-I'm working on cleaning up the block deck surface as well. I will be checking tolerance this weekend to make sure its in-spec.
-I might pull the oil pan to just take a peak at the crank and bearings.
Once I get stuff back I'm diving right into assembling the long block.

Build update:
With 3 feet of snow on the ground we are pretty much snowed in. I was able to tear down the rest of the motor.
I was going to reinstall the oil pump but I realized Toyota put o-rings on the upper pan and oil pump. So I'm stuck at the moment. I need to pick up gaskets next week anyways.

Good call welding that trigger wheel. If you haven't already, pick up a fluidampr crank pulley, these jz ones like to fall apart, and extend hard lines for fuel to the other side of the bay for safety's sake.
Respraying the bay something other than dull grey would look sweet.

He is going to drill them on a press for precision and then tap them for bolts.
after he reinstalls the baffles, he will tack weld the Bolts to the baffle.
it will cost me about $60-$100.00. But it well worth the piece of mind to me. I like doing things right the first time.

I got some inspiration from lilcim's "low level build". I decide to tear down the engine bay, clean up bad areas and repaint it. As well I have decided to add the chasebays Brake booster eliminator kit and pop valve. I found a kit second hand in great condition, and jumped on it!
A lot more work to do on the bay, but I see the end results in my head.

Got all of my 2J motor parts back from the powder coaters today. Absolutely love the finish. I had it on my Evo and had to do it on the 2jz
Check it out wrinkle black:

Thank lilcim! I have been watching your build every week. Every time you update it I get a little more motivation to get my completed. And back on the road.

Thanks for the kind words Scottie! I am way more excited about the 2jz then I was about the sr20. I think it shows in my work. Absolutely love this finish.

Should've just bought a shell and take it from there, but still a nice build.

I originally built it with a broken trans thinking and being told that's all that needed to be done. Turns out this car was a nightmare. It is what it is now.

Thank you! I didn't go crazy on the prep like others have. I wanted too, but just didn't feel like putting the money into tubs etc. I went dark to help hide all the imperfections in the bay. Plus I love graphite mica =]
