View Full Version : Ka24de Crank Pulely Slipped?

So when I set my KA24de at TDC on its compression cycle, with the valve cover off and spark plug out so I can see it for myself to be sure... The TDC mark on my crank pulley is nowhere near the aligning pin. Like almost 90 degrees off.
I haven't taken my crank pulley off yet, but how is this misalignment even possible given the keyway notch thing? Is there a way to clock it to get it set right?

I mean it's not impossible just very highly unlikely that the key walked. I had this happen on a 2000 civic SOHC cam gear once. Whoever did the timing belt fucked up installing the key allowing the cam gear to slowly walk making the motor out of time.

crankpulley comes off pretty easy. If the keyway fails I suspect it might be able to slip. If the pulley is a two-piece design the outer ring could also slip (sometimes called an intertia ring iirc, but I dont think these are on our engines).
You are sure you are on the compression stroke and not your exhaust stroke right?
If so, then I would next step: pull crank pulley and inspect key, confirm a missing/mashed wood riff key

Yeah, I should definitely take a look at it, and I'm definitely on compression stroke. It seems really odd... Got the engine to run and made my own tdc and 20 degree marks, and so far hasn't slipped anymore....
The previous owner ran a timing setup with coil packs, a standalone, and no distributor...I'm wondering if the pulley was installed misaligned (if even possible) because it didn't matter for him
