KA distibutor timing.

Trying to get my 240 to start, and all we're getting is the starter cranking and a few pops here and there out the exhaust. Went to mess with the distributor timing, and I ran into a major issue. Turned as car clockwise as the mounts for the distributor will let me, and that's where I'm getting the closest to the motor turning over the rest of the way. I can't take the distributor out and turn it a little, then place it back in because the single cam distributor seems to only go in one way, looking inside the end of the distributor and the motor itself they each have a D looking piece that needs to match up. Can someone help me figure out how to time this damn thing right?

I've already set the motor to TDC and the rotor is pointing at cylinder one on the distributor, but cranking it over still gives me the same results. It sounds like it wants to start and backfires a few times but won't actually get up and going. Could I have put the fuel lines on the injector rail wrong? That third link seems to have a lot of information with it that I'll continue checking out, thank you for the links!
