Do I have to get 96-01 diff to fit in the s14? I tried searching online about the dimensions but couldn't find anything. What's the different between 04 diff and the earlier model diff? Is the pumpkin different? Final drive ratio?

From what I understand the pre 1996 diff will fit in your car as well. The housing is the same but the ratio is different. The pre-96 had a ratio of 3.54 and the post-96 had a ratio of 3.69. I don't know anything about the newer q45 diffs.

90-96: Need larger wheel hubs like the Z32TT, Z32 TT driver side axle, Q45 driver side axle. This has a 3.54 ratio.
97-01: Uses stock stock S14 vlsd equipped axles or J30. 3.69 ratio.

Nah, you dont have to.
Just leave it stock and your car will still work.

Swap the guts, your ring you want and call it a day.

Is 04 diff guts and rings interchnagable though? I know the 91-01 does.

Found this, I think the 04 use the R230, so I am incorrect.
They do not fit.
The Q45 uses an R230, identical to the 300ZX TURBO. It does not bolt into the S13/S14 subframe...
IIRC, the M30 uses a weird rear suspension, some trailing arm setup...and has a diff similar to an older Z31 300ZX...the internals may be R200, but the case (or the whole diff) is not a bolt in deal.
If you read this on the 240sx.org page about diffs...that page sucks, lots of errors.
I have fixed the errors, and posted all the other good info for you:

Hope that helps... - Brian
