View Full Version : Tachometer not working in cluster.

Hi,
I just swapped over to an automatic digital cluster from my analog cluster. Everything except the tachometer on the digital cluster works, speedo, temperature, gas, ect...There shouldn't be any differences between automatic and manual tachs. Do I don't know why it won't work. The analog cluster's tach works, and my spare manual digital cluster's tach works as well.
Thanks,
-Dave

s13? sohc or dohc?

Sorry I didn't specify. It's on my 180sx with a sr20. It originally had the jdm analog, and everything works. I recently bought a jdm automatic hud cluster and that's the one with the non-working tach. I tested a usdm hud manual cluster and the tach works.

are the different tachs from cars that originally had different motors?
a sohc ka tach will not work with dohc ka or sr...it may be an issue of this nature
it has to do with the type of signal sent by the engine and what tach can read/interpret.
I do not have an exact answer, just trying to help give some direction.

None of the tachs are from a sohc. The ome that doesn't work is the jdm automatic hud cluster. I swapped the jdm automatic tach with a usdm manual tach and still nothing.

I was not specifically talking about sohc. heck being that you have a jdm vehicle I was not referring to usdm parts of any sort. I was simply trying to point you in a direction.
to re-iterate, I am not sure if CA18 (the motor I think originally was in your 180) has same signal characteristics of the SR20. So that could potentially be a source of issue.
If they do have the same signal type, I would be leaning towards the tack itself (portion of the cluster) being bad.
EDIT: further info - the cluster market, be it jdm or usdm is not a deciding factor. the inportant factor in the engine it was designed to be compatible with.

True, I had not really given much thought about the CA. The cluster may have been from a car equipped with CA. My car originally came with the SR. I was thinking SR and CA motors would have similar signal characteristics since people in the states swap CA and SR and use the usdm dohc clusters and tach.
I do appreciate your help. The hud cluster was tested as working before being shipped to me. As a last resort, I may just have to combine the two clusters to make one fully working cluster.

Im having a similar issue . I swap a ka24e to ka24de and everything works but my tach isn't working as well . Do I need a whole new cluster or is there something I can do to fix it

In your case, you just have to swap your tach face to one from a dohc.

What if I change out the analog harness with the ka24de harness? Wouldn't that work ?

NO, do what was stated. It is the solution
get a dohc tach, or cluster and install.
yes the tachs are easy to swap within the cluster.
