View Full Version : Sr20 won't rev past 6000 rpm under load

Hey guys. I have a red top sr20. I recently bought a new gt2781r turbo for it since the t25 was toast. Since I put it on a few months ago I have had nothing but problems. Luckily this car is a toy though and will spend the majority of its time in the garage until the autocross season.
First when I got the turbo I didn't realize the piping to the intercooler didn't fit right until after install. And at the time I was desperate to get it going. This is rigged up with a radiator hose some pvc pipe and an exhaust adapter that's as small as 1 7/8 of an inch.
I finally got it running and I had a major vacuum leak. Ended up having the vacuum hose to my waste gate come in contact with my power steering pulley.
Now I got everything going great. I tried to find any leaks with carb cleaner went around again with soapy water then again with starting fluid and finding no leaks. But for some reason it will not rev over 6k under load. It pulls well then it just instantly drops off. It doesn't backfire or pop doesn't act like I hit a rev limiter it just quits revving.
Could my piping to the intercooler cause that seeing as its a bit more restrictive in some spots? Or could it be that the fuel is cutting out or what?
Setup is a 1990 240 red top sr20. Front mount intercooler turbo back exhaust gt2871r turbo at 14 psi. Unfortunately still stock injectors stock ecu and 255 psi fuel pump.

Could be running out of fuel. Especially with that turbo at 14psi. Turn down the boost if you can, but it might be difficult if you don't have an adjustable wastegate actuator. The intake you have rigged up could also be collapsing when trying to breathe at 6k

lol, stock ECU and injectors and a 2871r bolted on. Really?

Yeah. I plan to try and get some injectors and a tunable ecu. Only reason why I upgraded the turbo before any of that is because the t25. I do have an adjustable waste gate I'll try and adjust to see if it may rev higher with lower boost. I figured if fuel was cutting out it would backfire and miss.

Kind of put the cart before the horse....

Yeah a little lol. I'm in search for injectors but of course life comes first and with kids and Christmas money is tight. Luckily I have until march to get this sorted. I just needed some place to start seeing as there's a ton that needs to be done to this car.

Turn that shit down.

I just ordered some 550cc injectors now and getting information on finding the cheapest way to get a tunable ecu that will give me enough of a base tune to where it may not be as dangerous to drive around until I can get a dyno tune after the holidays.

Rom tune it and be done with it. You obviously don't know enough about the function of a motor to be tuning anything yourself.

Turn down your boost on the 2871 to 7psi and you'll be fine for awhile. If you haven't messed anything up already.

You also could be collapsing the intake tube as you said it's rigged with radiator hose. If there is any sort of silicon elbow coming off the turbo to the filter,it can collapse. If you have a boost gauge check to see if it drops to zero when you get to 6k as you say. Also, yes turn down the boost to be safe

I do have a boost gauge. I'll check that and turn the boost down a bit. I agree I don't know anything at all when it comes to tuning so whatever the case I would be paying to get it done.
