Ticking noise....... Need help

I have a KA24DET, the motor & turbo is new and just got tuned a couple of weeks ago. On the second day I was driving the car ( decided to get the RPM up and went for a short blast ). There is now a ticking ( clanking ) sound, there is no noise on idle and ticking ( kind of loud ) starts at around 3000 but goes away at about 5000 rpm. I have had a few people come and look at it and we thought is was a rod bearing, well we took the oil pan off and all bearings are good. A mechanic came over and checked the head ( still on car ) earlier and claims it is OK.............. I have a mechanics stethoscope and the noise is from the back of the motor but can not tell if it is top or bottom. Pulling the head off next ( could it be a cracked head gasket? )
On a side note the car pulled 310 hp and 360 ft lb on the dyno, lowered the boost to 260 rwhp and 300 ft lb.
Any thing you guys can come up with would be helpful.

Did not check for exhaust leaks. With the stethoscope we could tell that the noise comes from the block and at the rear. What puzzles me is no noise at low or high RPM.
On a side note never bring your car to total tuning in Quebec, I will post a tread on that later. Waste of lots of money going there.

I do like working on imports and really like drifting, going to Icar this weekend

I hope you find the source of the ticking...I've heard exhaust leaks sound
like that before.

Can you try posting a video of the sound?
Is it more noticeable on the intake or exhaust side?
You said it's coming from the rear of the motor, have you gotten under the car to listen?
It's your flywheel or pressure plate loose?

Is it a steady rhythmic ticking in that rpm range, or does it get faster or louder before it stops?

I have the same thing but it sounds a little more like a rattle...not chain guides tho. I took those out with the last timing chain replacement. it only makes noise around 1500rpm to 2000rpm tho...but if your engine is still running without loss of power or any obvious problems, you're fine. throw some mystery oil in there and see if the mystery can solve it. :)

The sound is more of a rattle than a tick, hard to describe... Need to put the cross member and oil pan back on and then I will video the noise... Head comes off next.

If you have the motor out already, check now. Pull the trans and make sure the fly wheel and pressure plate are tight

Ok, went I checked the rod bearings I checked for looseness and all was good, I decided to pull a couple of caps off and the bearings need to be replaced.
Also found out that the bearing material ended up contaminating the oil and screwed up my turbo. Turbo is repaired ( $700.00 :rant: ) and have new bearings and crank is good.
My question: How can I flush out the contaminated oil that is still in the block/head ( head going in Monday for a check up ).. So just block...

Last. I needed to do that I pulled all oil pan as well as the valve cover and started hosing the head down with Brake clean. Didn't pull anything apart just kept spraying it down till the only thing coming out the bottom is clear Brake clean.

Put the Pan back on, and valve cover. New oil. Unplugged the fuel pump fuse and cranked the car 6 or 7 times to let the new oil rotate. Plugged the fuse in. And fired right up.

Would it be a good idea to drain the oil again before starting? Waste of time?

I would flush it all down. You said you had pieces of bearings breaking off and who knows what else could be in your oil passages. Wouldn't hurt to rose it down and replace the oil. This way you know you won't be feeding dirty or chunky into your turbo

Put your motor back together. Start it up, let it idle for 15mins. Drain your oil and change your filter. Add new. Drive the car, without beating on it for a 100miles or so. Drain oil and change filter. If you want to be paranoid about it, do it at 1k miles and you should be fine. Otherwise, have the machine shop flush the oil passages.
