View Full Version : Weird SR Running Probem

My car is an 89' s13 with a s14 sr20det. Just finishing my swap.

So anyways.. awhile ago I put some transmission fluid into my tranny. I had a good idea that there was probably too much in there, but I wasn't worried as I was going to remove the excess.

This morning the car was running smooth with the stock sr speed sensor in so I went ahead and switched it out with a s13 speed sensor so it would work with my speedometer. While pulling the SR out, ton of oil spilled out like I expected. The car was level in the garage so I waited til the oil pretty much stopped leaking. I assumed that was the perfect indication that there was the perfect amount of fluid.

I hooked up the speed sensor I just put in to the tranny harness and started it up. It sounded like shit and was running rough and smoking so I turned it off and thought maybe something was messing up by having the speed sensor hooked up so I unplugged it and tried again. Car still ran shitty like the time before.

Realistically the only thing that changed from when it ran smooth to when it ran shitty was the amount of transmission oil.

Do I need more oil??

Please let me know if my procedures are right with the transmission fluid leveling.

Once you see oil coming out of the fill hole, you should be good.
Its weird that its running rough, you try re- installing the sr speed sensor?

everything is plugged in correct?
also all grounds are good?

That's a good idea. I'll switch it back to the original sensor tomorrow morning and see if that was the problem.

Should it matter whether I use the speed sensor hole or the transmission drain hole to level my transmission fluid? I think they are pretty much at same height.

What do you mean by ran shitty? I'm trying to comprehend if you're still talking about the tranny or the engine.

The engine was running shitty as if it were misfiring or the timing was wrong or something right after I changed the speed sensor and drained a bunch of tranny fluid

The speed sensor hole is rather low compared to the fill port so I would make sure your oil is topped up. Unless you touched something else nothing you have done should have caused the symptoms you are describing.

I agree. I will top it off any try again when I get the chance tomorrow. Hopefully thats all it was

You pulled the engine out? And re-installed it? And now it runs bad?

You must have forgot to plug something in, or you have a boost leak.

You hit the nail on the head. My hot pipe came loose = Boost leak

I couldn't get the transmission fill plug loose. Apparently its a common problem. I might jack up the rear end a bit to actually have the fill hole and the bottom of the speed sensor level and then add more fluid through the speed sensor hole. I think it should work out. If I add a bit more than it needs, it shouldn't be an issue.

Better to have a little more than a little less I think.

I ususally drain the transmission first, then fill from the shifter hole about 2 and 3/4 quarts of fluid. The FSM tells you how much goes in.

Ya thats what I did originally, but then I had to switch out my speed sensor so then I lost some fluid. I am just lazy to take my console apart to pour in some fluid through the shifter. Figured the fill hole would be easier

If the fill hole plug was inwards instead of sticking out, I could have probably used a breaker bar to get it off, but I've put so much torque on it that its just rounding now
