I am changing my rear main seal on my s13 sr20det. I used an OEM s13 sr20det rear main seal last time and it started leaking. I ordered another s13 sr20det seal, but I was wondering if the s14 seal is any better? I know the s13 and s14 motors use the same crank and seal housing. I have them both side by side and the s13 is black and s14 is brown. They have different construction and the seal lip around the crank is larger on the s14 seal. I am now leaning towards the s14 seal. Have any of you tried both seals? I just want to see if anyone else has had any experience with using both seals or ever thought about it? I don't want to pull this tranny again unless my clutch burns out.

if they are cheap, maybe pull it out and give the s14 one a try for us and report back =)

I have what is labeled as the s14 seal on my s13, I never changed it and it hasn't leaked, it was black from years of use, but during cleaning it looks just like the s14 seal. These engines are more identical than people would like to admit, so if you have a chance to upgrade to parts from an s14 you could do it, unless it is truly s14 specific.

Yeah, they are about $25 each. I just put in the s14 seal, I will see how it works out.

Yeah, that's true. The bottom ends are basically identical besides the oil port for vtc on the s14/s15 engine. Funny thing is that when I ordered my rear seal from Nissan, they said that the seals are not interchangeable. I questioned that because I knew the crank and seal housings are the same. They said they have separate part numbers, so they are different.
I just got done putting in the s14 rear seal on my s13 motor, hopefully no more leaks.

Typically, when seals go bad or start to leak there is an issue. Sometimes the seal has failed, sometimes, the seal wears a groove into the metal it rides on and it no longer has the surface tension it use to and allows fluids to seep and eventually leak.

Check your crank surface for any minor imperfections when you do the seal swap. Clean it thoroughly, any burrs could cut the seal, fine sand paper usually takes care of it.

Thanks for the reply. That was the first thing I did when I pulled the seal. I inspected the crank and seal housing for any burrs or scoring. I didn't see anything that would cause an issue. I took some fine sandpaper and polished the end of the crank for safe measures. I have the car back together now, so hopefully no leaks.
